It'll be fine! Supermarkets can't predict exactly when something will go bad and they have to play it safe, so I always eat stuff 1-2 days after the date.

  • How does the meat know that it has to go off at a certain point. The best way to check is use your eyes and nose, if it doesnt look funky or smell funky then it should be okay.

  • As this has fallen from the front page of OS, I'll add it to the exisitng thread where it might help others in the future :)

  • Made my morning coffee this morning and was amazed to see the milk ive been using is 15 days past its use by date.
It still tastes and smells perfectly fine, not even a slight starting to turn smell.

We were lucky enough last year to be able to buy a new fridge freezer, so maybe this has something to do with it ?

Thats a record in our house, whats your record?

  • Wow that is some doing!
I had some last week that was 10 days out of date and it was absolutely fine, but that is the longest out of date milk that I have ever used.

Was it Cravendale or something similar?

I'm really funny about milk, I don't know why. I'll quite happily sniff a chicken to see if it's still ok, I've happily cooked steaks a week or more out of date, and there's smoked trout in my fridge that's best before September and will be eaten one of these days, but with milk I'll use it the day after the use by date and then chuck it whether it whiffs or not.

Milk in here doesn't last more than a day anyway.. I think you need to buy smaller cartons of milk :p

  • Sometimes, well normally we get through 8 pints a week, but just lately we haven't been using no where near as much, we didnt buy any in this weeks shop because there was plenty in the fridge, just didnt realise the date!
    its just normal tesco milk.

Im completely the opposite, i would maybe eat the meat and fish 1 day past its date, but after that would be to worried about it to enjoy eating it !!

Fish with use by date of september>> Wow, your a braver old styler than me!!

Well it's cured smoked fish and it's been shrink wrapped, it should be alright but I'll have a good old sniff and taste a little bit before scoffing the lot. If it was fresh fish I wouldn't even think about it, obviously, I'm not that bad :D

The thing about meat and fish (especially chicken) is that if it's off, you can very easily tell that it's off because it will stink, and meat and poultry will start to go sticky.

    Hi misskaytee,

I've very blase about use by dates and prefer to use my own judgement, but even so I would think twice about drinking milk that was fifteen days out of date. :)

As this has dropped down the Old Style board I've added it to the main thread on food safety.
