Barneysmom, I appreciate you're trying to be helpful, but can you explain to me how we survived pre "use by" " sell by" "display until" dates???? I'm really not wishing to be horrible, but my grandmothers, and even my mother for the early part of her life, would have bought no foods with a "use by" date. The human race has survived for thousands of years relying for the most part on instinct, taste and smell. I really do despair for this world with the amount of food that is thrown away. Even the humble potato will be sold with a "use by" date in the supermarket. My grandmothers bought from local markets or greengrocers where such an idea was totally alien. The brie in question is 2 days out of date. Surely it didn't become toxic at midnight on the date in question? I've had food I've thrown away as "bad" that was still in date!!! My instincts confirmed what my nose had already detected :D

I do appreciate that food does "go off", and to be honest I haven't looked at the link you gave ( I will do in a minute) but I worry that people are just getting frightened of their food :( I would always take greater care with the elderly, pregnant, children or immuno-suppressed.

And perhaps I should confess, I hate ripe, runny cheeses:rotfl::o

I didn't mean to upset anyone, but we don't know if the op is elderly or infirm, I just gave the advice I'd give anyone, which is to not eat out of date brie .

    I made a mistake sorry.

No, I've got to confess I asn't sure of the date so I clicked my clock Friday 15th October at the bottom of the screen and it said Fir 15th October, a whole week ahead of the real date. Teach me to check it more often! Ooops!

I have been given near on a freezer full of frozen meat mostly pork and fish. I don't know how old it is, do you think it's safe to eat or should we let the dog feast on it instead?

It's haddock fillets, cod fillets and pork chops.

If it hasn't ever thawed then it should be fine, it may be a little dry if it's been in there a long while, so would be best in a casserole rather than grilled. I made a fish pie from some fish I found with a 2006 date in my freezer the other week, still live to tell the tale.

P.S. Pork chops and dog digestion is not a good combination!!
  • I personally wouldn't eat the fish as it doesn't keep as long as meat.....just to be safe

Juat been on nights and saw this thread and read it as "Is it safe to eat dog food?" hahahaha

I'd go with the advice above though :)

  • If they were frozen still fresh shouldn't be a problem to cook ans eat them.

I personally wouldn't risk it with myself or a dog if I had one.

I freeze food all the time, as I'm sure you do, but here I'm guessing you don't know how old it is, what proper controls have been in place, kept frozen etc, age when frozen.

Its a shame but I wouldn't risk it.

    Just a quick question...

Using chicken leftovers from my roast yesterday to make risotto tonight. Wanted to use the leftovers from that for lunch tomorrow... Will that be ok or is reheating twice too much?
