A friend of mine who used to be a chef once told me that supermarket beef joints and steak are best eaten a day or two after their use by date as age tenderises them. There is a word for this but I can't remember it now. Butcher shops know this and tend to sell such meat when it has tenderised but supermarkets just pack it and sell it.
    .

I have to agree with the sentiment here, I always buy the BBE clearance organic steak from ASDA when I see it, then use it a day or so later as a treat, always lovely & tender, but then it is best fillet or ribeye steak so I would expect it to be

    Hi all

Sorry, didn't know where to ask this but seen some great food tips here so hope I can get some opinions.

I bought some spare ribs from my local Chinese takeaway yesterday evening but didn't eat them and forgot to put them in the fridge until this evening (about 20 hours after buying).

I don't want to waste £5's worth of food but do you think I would get ill from eating them if I nuked them in the microwave?

I know nobody can say for sure but does anyone know how risky it would be?

    Thanks

chinese spare ribs are pork I believe, and pork goes off quite quickly at room temperature. I am always really careful with pork and refridgerate or freeze leftovers within a couple of hours. tbh - I wouldnt chance it. even nuked!!!
but then I have a delicate tummy - my OH could probably eat them as his is cast iron.

Im not sure i would risk it tbh, they maybe ok, but I have a very delicate tummy :D I would chuck them, and next time put them in the fridge as soon as they have cooled down.

Don't do it, it's not worth the risk, it will make you ill.

This probably wont help but my missus would eat anything for fear of it being wasted otherwise, but then she is Indian and so can generally stomach the most rancid foods going.

Personally though, I wouldnt chance it. I know its a shame to bin uneaten food but is £5 worth a potential bout of campylobacter!

    What Barney said ^^^^

Better to waste a fiver than spend a couple of days or so not being able to eat and being ill. Put it down to the cost of experience - you'll not forget that again.

Mind you, the two or three days of potential upchucking and being unable to eat does work wonders with the weight loss and saves on the food bill at the same time.... :D

    Thanks all,

I will throw them away - you're right, not worth the risk £5 isnt worth a day or two out of action.

Was very angry with myself when I saw that I left them on the counter earlier.

Looks like it's a couple of rounds of toast for dinner tonight! :-)

Whenever we get a chinese there is always some left over. My OH leaves it out of the fridge for like 24HRs then just nukes it... _pale_ he's always fine but I think he has guts of steel lol. I won't eat anything that's been left out these days, just don't fancy it.

If I get a take out & eat some, leave some,I let it cool down before refrigerating or freezing it,something my mom told me about never put warm food into a fridge.
I'll eat it later but if it contains prawns or other seafood,I wont.
