I keep cheese indefinitely in the fridge in an airtight box once open. It will soon let you know once it has gone off!

I have an unsmoked bacon joint in my fridge, still in its vacuum pack untouched with use by date of 9th may, would it be safe for me to cook it tomorrow (14th)? I Bought it Sunday and put it straight in the fridge when I got home where it has resided ever since. Normally fresh meat goes straight in the freezer or is cooked only this time I forgot
I expect you've made a decision by now, but I'd open it, smell it and if it looks and smells OK, I'd cook it (making sure it was well cooked - use a meat thermometer if you can to get a good internal temp reading)
Bacon is treated in brine to preserve it, so a few more days isn't going to turn it from 'safe' to 'unsafe'.Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0 -

If chicken is even a wee bit smelly, it goes straight in the bin. Even if it's still in date. I've seen whole chickens with a few days left before their use by dates that had started to turn green.
I say this as someone who ate a tin of tomatoes yesterday that was best before a year ago, and will happily eat smoked mackerel that officially went off a month ago. Chicken is just too risky.0 -
Bin it ! If it smelled before you cooked it, it wasn't right, won't be any better now !0

if you are in any doubt - i personally wouldn't risk it but that's because dodgy chicken makes me projectile vomit
I'm sure some would but you have to do what you're happy with. Would you enjoy eating it , wondering if you're going to see it again later? :rotfl:A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

If it's just on the turn and not totally rancid rinse it under the tap for a minute or two.
A pro chef told me this so I expect it is standard restaurant practice.0 -
