The Giving Up Smoking Thread - Part 3

  • Hi all,

Just to say I had my 3rd appointment with the NHS Smoking Cessation Counsellor today. I felt really good having quit for a whole month -(no cigarettes in January!!). After the usual chat on how I was doing, it came to the 'blow into the machine' time.

Both my previous readings have been 2 ppm of Carbon Monoxide and I was really hoping to get it down to 1ppm. So car windows open on the way into town to see her (I live 6 miles out of town) and really deep breathing as well. Result was a reading of 1ppm of carbon monoxide - yippee!!!. Not sure whether a zero reading is possible - I forgot to ask but will ask next week.

Anyway, reading through this threads postings, it seems like a few members have stopped smoking today (1/2/11) or are quitting tomorrow. I was in that position only a month ago and never thought for one minute that I would last a month withouit a cig. However do please take it a day at a time and come onto this thread for support and help.

For me, this thread, the counsellor, a couple of weeks on patches, an empty inhalator and sugar free polo's all helped in their own ways and I really find it hard to believe I am a month on without needing the patches anymore and I now find smoking does smell awful (and I used to smell like that!). I am not complacent though and still on my guard but after the first week that definitely got easier.

Anyway, good luck to all the quitters (new and old)!!

    Tally

    Everyone

Hope everyone is well. Sorry I've not been around for a while I've been very busy with work and other jobs around the house, painting cupboards and tiles (and cheating on the grouting by painting it instead..Az's top tip there ;))
WOW! How many new people?? Welcome to you all and good luck with all your quits, the journey is fantastic!!!!
I've just read all the posts I've missed in the past week or so and it's like the M25 here, so busy :rotfl: I'm lost for words on what to say..

I have now reached the 4 week/month stage and the biggest achievement, apart from the not smoking is for me....the bank charges..(read previous post) Where are they? Who stole my astronomical bank charges this month? 43p that's all I was charged this month compared to the normal £75-£150 EVERY MONTH!! I know it's not all down to the spending on ciggies BUT it didn't help going to the cash machine every other day withdrawing £10 buying ciggies and mints. So I am very pleased that I worked for my wages and didn't waste any of it last month :T

Still smelling smoke on people coming out/going in Tesco's entrance, thinking of standing there with air fresheners in both hands spraying people to make a point prob get a slap or two across the face but at least they will smell nice ;)

Anyway again, hope you are all well and 'speak' soon

    AZ xx

  • Hi Az, I think the one thing I've noticed is we've had a bit left over for a couple of takeaways this month, without raiding piggy banks. Unheard of for us in January before :)
This time I haven't smoked since 6th Jan 2014 and still going ok.
    Fingers crossed x

    Afternoon people :j
Oh Kiwi, I know exactly how you've been feeling i had a complete melt down on Sunday and spent time crying, well more like sobbing my eyes out in the hallway. :( Big hugs to you :grouphug:
What is it about regaining control of your life that makes you feel like this?

I've over done it on the exercise, and need to slow down a little and make sure i put in equal amounts of exercise and relaxation. I think i've been scared of slowing down in case i start thinking about fags, but given my health problems, i've just knackered myself out, so i've had some early nights to try to re-balance myself.
good luck everyone and well done:D

Hi Maria and thanks, you just made me think maybe I have been overdoing it on the keeping busy front. I'm a busy bee at the best of times, flitting about and doing stuff and I'm finding I don't have the energy I normally would have.

I've reduced my patch to half today after being on 2/3 for just over a week, as I'm not sure if these are helping or hindering. I think I would prefer to be free of them altogether and I have not noticed any difference with just being on a half today.

Thanks I have difficulties having a rant and rave on the keyboard and usually type stuff out and then delete it. Shame we can't do that in real life, like scream and shout at someone with no volume and then delete it. :rotfl:

Congrats on achieving one month off the smokey joes - that's wonderful and worth shouting about. :T

  • OK I know it's pathetic - I couldn't even make 24 hours . The withdrawal - I'd never experienced this before when I'd tried quitting and I just fell apart. Started sobbing over the stove whilst cooking dinner, pacing up and down the lounge, mind racing, dizziness, nausea...so utterly, utterly miserable. :(

I have a life to lead - I haven't got time to be a mess. Not sure what to do next.

Thanks to everyone who has extended their support. You've all done so well and I look forward to finding the strength to get there too:o
