The Giving Up Smoking Thread - Part 3

Hi, all.
I must be getting there as I had to look at my quit meter (first time today:cool:) to see how many days it is now.
I'm certainly getting more done, climbed the stepladder up to the top of the built in cupboard in the kitchen yesterday, took everything down. Cleaned it (Yuk! it's generally things stored for Mr Justin Case) had a great purge, sent OH to the waste transfer station with boxes of stuff so I wouldn't have second thoughts. Then I put stuff back and had room to move things like marmalade up there and also stuff bought in bulk while on special offer. I'm basking in glory here and have just opened the doors and admired it. :rotfl::rotfl: It doesn't take a lot to make me happy!
3 more shelves to go!
Kiwi You probably won't take as long to quit as I did. I started seriously thinking about it in October last year and finally hit that point (half way through a cig) on 19th December.
Penelope The small meals and often is working for me as well. As OH and I eat lunch and dinner together, I save a bit of my lunch to eat later in the afternoon and usually end up eating the remains of my dinner for breakfast. I've put on a little (judging by my clothes) but should be able to lose it when spring arrives.
Sally Well done on the patches! You are doing great. :T
Goochie You are doing great as well. :T I know what you mean about not getting up from your desk. When I was waiting for a hip replacement, I set an alarm in Outlook to pop up after 20 min. It just said 'MOVE'.
It's great to hear how well everyone is doing.
We can do it. Together. :j:beer::jBut how can you know what you want till you get what you want and you see if you like it?0 -
Hi everyone and so good to see so much team-spirit going on here.
So good to read your very positive post, Sally. Isn't it wonderful when you get necessary jobs completed, very therapeutic especially in quitting times. A whole new life ahead of you! Use the patches as they're best for you, but for other times stick to fruit, breathing, water, exercise as written out to auntiesue below. Keep something to hand to 'play' with tonight..hair..keys..a hanky to twist around your fingers...think about anything similar, also have a non alcoholic drink always by you. Your friend don't smoke - see - they're normal!!! BTW..well done on the advice to kiwisaver!:T
Hi ASue (makes it easier to know who we're talking to) well done for pushing on despite the cravings, though they'll get easier. Try breathing to help, take slow, but deep breaths and remember the water which is best done in sipping at through the cravings AND for help against eating too much and gaining weight! Try the Ice Pops too, it maybe cold weather-wise, but sucking away at them performs wonders! Well done your DS 2 for his encouragement - worth the World to any quitter!!! :T
You look after yourself, topsyturphy and when it's possible take advantage of the extra sleep, you obviously really need it and the time slept is time not having problems with quitting! Let your little one help you where she's safely able to, kiddies love to feel useful.....at that age at least!
Very bad luck indeed, DD, but as you say, measured by the tragedies of others, it could be FAR worse!
Hi Ellie and well done in staying strong, especially when family don't always help...us too with being extra agitated mind, so bite your tongue now and then :silenced: - and try to get them to do the same. It might also help if you mention how much you need the support! Re the patches, how about leaving the night time one off, most people benefit from doing so because of the dreams. Have a look at what I've written above to auntiesue, it does help.
[Quote=kiwisaverI_just_want_it_to_be_over_already,_if_I_could_have_had_the__patches_last_weekend_I_would_have_started_Monday_of_this_week._I_got_them__yesterday_and_was_dead_keen_to_get_going_straight_away;_however_I_talked_myself__out_of_it,_being_too_hard_to_start_so_near_to_the_weekend.[/quote]
Hi kiwisaver, I wouldn't let the make of the patches worry you in any way. You sound extremely tense and concerned about stopping, and most of us get that way, but try hard to look for ways to distract yourself from thinking way too much. You're about to undertake something so really meaningful and to get benefits from doing so for the rest of your life. Try not to let your mind make the actual stopping harder than it needs to be. Think about putting your mind and hands into doing something you really enjoy, it makes things so much easier when we lose our thoughts - and you will do if you seek to do so. How about starting up something new? The Internet has plenty to offer and so much is available to learn from scratch. Be careful not to b taking too much Vit C with the oranges and tablets, too much of something isn't always a good thing. Put your mind to memories and beautiful places and don't think of quitting as being the end of your life when the opposite it the case! Once you get started begin each new day with the saying "I'm choosing not to smoke today, but if I wish to, tomorrow I may!" You'll get there! ;)Have a look at this line on SmellyOldSock's signature "Toughest form of mountain climbing is climbing out of a rut"! The fags are a rut! Have a look at her post, it's an exceptionally good one!
SmellyOldSock, anyone quitting purely by CT is to be admired, but to stick firmly to it with your very positive attitude is terrific and you should be extremely proud of yourself!!! :T:TThanks for all the inspiration to everyone else and keep right on laughing!
Oh Anna, you really are totally amazing! Do you and SOS live next door!!! :rotfl:Thoroughly enjoy the good days as you're bound to experience the not to good ones too; the brain and body are being taught a whole new way of life to what we're used to so how can we expect to swing it round without it affecting us. I thought your friend was brilliant as I was concerned for you yesterday, but she obviously cared, bless her. Do try sipping water or half glassfuls at a time to help fill you up and keep that up, though try not for about 25 minutes before eating or you'll wash the enzymes away and have minor problems with digestion. Otherwise keep up what you're doing and enjoy getting healthy again and physically fit, but don't overdo it!! Do you need to check with your GP?
Yet another with the food bug then Penelope! You don't seem too bad though and are trying to control it well, but again.....the water, water, water!! Keep it near you and use it to fill up on! Be so darn proud of all you're doing :T:T, your OH as well :T:T..and what a thing to be bickering over! :rotfl:Just be sure to make up again. :kisses2: Well...a bit like that.
Rattle on as much as you like, goochie, some good advice there. It does sound as though you'd benefit from some exercise though. Very well done with stopping. You have a happy weekend as well.
Sounds like you're having renovations and loving it, Tricia, how quickly we become super cleaners once we've stopped the evil fags!;)
Keep up this amazing work everyone! The feeling of knowing you're all in it together as well as all here helping each other along is brilliant to watch. :T:T:T:T

Only day 2, feels like 2 weeks!!:D
Woke up at 4.30am and was unable to drop back off so tired and grouchy today, have snapped at DS2 and now feel awful for doing so, work was manic - and so hence the tears. Trying so hard not to give in.
Have stocked up on more fruit to nibble on and have been drinking plenty of water Sue-UU.
Have been reading other posts and don't feel so bad that these feelings are quite usual and do get better. Here's hoping!
Am working over the weekend so at least I'll be kept busy.
Well done to others for your efforts.0 -
Keep going AuntieSue, you are nearly over the worst bitThis time I haven't smoked since 6th Jan 2014 and still going ok.
Fingers crossed x0 -
hey everyone well my will power is definately reduced today and yesterday - not sure why that would be at this stage especially as others are saying they are having a wail of a time? Definately yesterday and today I was tempted to get some cigs, and went through a period of about an hour today thinking I would go get some. Reminded myself that I don't need to and over time I will be able to cope with stress without thinking of cigs but right now its not the case! Have had a bit of a stressful week so maybe that's it? I've also noticed that I haven't been drinking water or on the thread as much over the last few days so maybe that has something to do with it as well?
Reading the thread does help though, but maybe at the moment I need to get involved a bit more rather than lurking...
Contacted the rep for the apartment in Moroccoso that's less than a month away :T did think after the horrors of my car that I might have to cancel due to money - but clearly I was being insane!
(car has cost £1200 so far and need to take it back the week after next to get the alternator replaced
, mechanic took pity on me and promised me a free MOT!)
Stay strong everyone, we're doing well and the thread is a marvel for times when I've hit a wall. Must remember to reaffirm my resolve every morningDF as at 30/12/16

What is the best way to give up smoking when sadly, you actually enjoy smoking? Was thinking about trying Zyban but am concerned of the side effects.
Congratulations to everyone for doing so well- it must be so hard! xxSealed Pot Challenge 7 (2014) #1851

Hi Sabrina, I think I think I like smoking (but any time I actually sit down and focus solely on smoking and not doing anything else, its doesn't actually taste that nice) and there are times when I think - god I'll never have another  I just think the main thing is if you really want to, even if you like it there are many things I think you would enjoy more? hths xDF as at 30/12/16

Good Evening All
Sue, you do make me laugh..Crazy Az :rotfl: DS calls me Phoebe (from friends) says I'm weird like her (prob said that before??) I did 'God bless' the little animals in Tesco tonight while shoppingGot to say I have a GSOH, even though a tad 'strange' :rotfl: It's so nice when my nieces say 'Oh, Auntie 'AZ' you do make us laugh', but they do think I've lost the plot when I God bless all the animals that didn't make it across the road
They should have been taught by Tufty the squirrel
Anyway, I'm glad to report it's been 2 weeks for me and without this thread and all the encouragement from everyone here I really don't think I could have got through these 2 weeks this 'easy'. Thank you everybody you are all an inspiration, I've recommended you all to my 'smoker' friends. I'm really trying to get them to come on here, to read some posts, like I did, and make the decision to quit, although I know they have to want to quit. The benefits of giving up are phenomenal (wow! big word for AZ this time of night) I came downstairs today ready for work and thought 'I feel clean, smell nice and really proud' You know what was good..Going food shopping and not have to keep money back for ciggies, what a feeling :T AND knowing that I'm not going to the cash m/c all the time my 'horrendous' bank charges will soon be a thing of the past :T
Hope everyone is well and staying strong

but we MUST keep on stepping."0 -
Hiya Az, the two week feeling is good, isn't it!
Sabrina, write a list of every reason why you want to keep smoking. Then write a list of every reason why you don't want to smoke. See if you can balance it out.
For me I still don't hate smoking - I'll be honest. But I do hate the smell, the taste, the sore throat, the burnt tongue, the stinky clothes, the degrading standing out in the rain, the expense, something else being in control of me - rather than me.
I want to be me not a smoker. This time I haven't smoked since 6th Jan 2014 and still going ok.
Fingers crossed x0
