Hi there Jenny! It's so very good to hear from you and know you've been doing so very well. Great news about the 5 mile walk!! :T If you walk briskly or do aerobics you'll expand your lungs that much more, anything which does that is so beneficial to us in general, but especially the lungs which begin to lose elasticity in our 30s! So keep hard at it, Jenny! :j
I'm sure your chest problems and sniffly nose are simply due to your body getting used to going without fags as well as getting rid of the rubbish. It could also be after having been lying down all night. No need to worry about it too much for now, but if it persists then see your Dr about as you may have a touch of asthma. It left me with it, though it only affects me in going up hill or if I run. Whatever.....what a good job we came to our senses and gave it all up!!!### I would definitely get a copy of AC's book for your DH, if he's not too keen on quitting yet, then thumb through it yourself then leave it lying around so that, hopefully, he'll be curious and have a look himself. Men usually find it easier to quit than we do, so fingers crossed!
Congratulation Jen, you're doing really well!

So sorry to hear of your news, Maz, your lass really does have at rough, poor girl. I do hope someone can soon help her as her joints never sounds natural.
Keep your hands in water as well as drinking plenty and you'll be prune=like inside and out!! :rotfl:I suppose the barlinnie reference comes from the Barlinnie prison in Glasgow? It would make sense I suppose.
Wishing you well, Maz. Take care.

Hi jwarren66 and a warm welcome aboard! So many people speak marvellously of AC's book, the CD too, so it's good to hear of another near success story!
Each to their own and what they find best where patches etc are concerned as some folk have had terrific success with patches especially. BTW, if you get stuck for reading material - there are 2 complete threads prior to this one!Very best wishes to you.

Good Heavens Chrissie...your well over 4 months away from the wee beasties!!!! Isn't it a wonderful feeling to be FREE!!!! You're right, times's going by so fast!

I can't believe I've actually made it to 3 weeks!! *is amazed* falls over*
Apparently some of my friends aren't so surprised. They figured that since I did it this time without being nagged into it, that I'm finally ready. And apparently when I want to do something I can be a stubborn ole mare :P
I'm left wondering how exactly to take that :P In their defence they've been trying to get me to quit for the last 10 years!!
Had a few hairy moments in the last few days. Strangely one of the best supporters I have is a smoker, he isn't ready to quit yet and I promised not to bully him into it, but he has been a tower of strength to me. It helps that he works with me and that I can email "I need a fag" to him, to which I'll get "no you don't, you just think you do" or such like.Sounds silly I know, but it helps to keep me focused
Welcome to the new people, and lots of luck!! And to everyone else, hope it's all going well and keep up the good work!!

Hi Blue and very many congratulations!!! :T:T You've done brilliantly, though your friends are so right about if needing to be the time 'you picked - not them! It's a wonder to me they didn't realise that sooner!
Your smoker friend, his turn will come, who supports you so well is doing a marvellous job and the e-mails sound a terrific idea! Keep with all you're doing now, Blue, you can't go wrong! Be proud of yourself.

First week in (apart from my barlinnie special, yes sue you got it right )
Massive £90 not spent on cigs already. It's funny, u don't notice that when you're buying a packet or 2 a day. But it's not long in adding up.
Had some good news for a change. Well not good news but a step in the right direction. Finally a doctor actually put a name to what is wrong with DD knees. She has Patella Alta, which is more common in people with HMS/EDS. Basically her kneecap is too high, maybe a bit too small too, hence why it pops all the time. So we have a name to give her wobbly bits. Doc was great and very understanding. Told her exactly where to ice it and for how long. Was great to see a doc who understood, and for the first time she wasn't told she'd grow out of it (21 btw). So, she's to have 3 weeks of rest. Then he'll decide on whether to send her to start physio or for an MRI to go down the surgery route.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=!!!T7-XRoxY <--- this short vid best describes it, but dd's doesn't come back on it's own, she has to grab it and pull it back into place.
More good news. DD has also decided to stop smoking :T The first week, I had been using the spares I had in the house, so was in the chemist with her when she heard me asking and decided there and then to give it a go. :T
Big well done to all. We can all give ourselves a bit pat on back4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0 -
Thanks Chrissie and Sue!!:)
Sue - I'm not sure they realised they were nagging to be fair, more "being helpful", to be fair to them most of them don't smoke never have done so they don't really understand. I think they just eventually gave up on me, which was the best thing they could have done.
And yeah, my work friend will quit when he's ready
Mazza, glad to hear that you and your DD have got some progress on her condition, and YAY to you both on the quit thingAnd yes, back pattage in order all round

Hoooo-raaaaay for your lass, Maz!!!! :T That's wonderful news, so very pleased to hear it. Thank goodness for Drs who DO take notice! Well done her for giving up the fags too!!!! The amount you've saved so far is amazing! Keep hard at it, Maz!!!Blue_Elephant wrote:most of them don't smoke never have done so they don't really understand. That's so often the way it is with most folk, Blue, if they just left folk to get on with it at their own pace then like as not, they'd soon get on and start to quit, but if they've never smoked themselves then they haven't a clue!Have a wonderful Easter, everyone!

Hello everyone
Not posted on here before but have read for a while and very inspiring. I smoked for nearly 15 years (average 10 a day) with a couple of years inbetween not smoking but finally put a halt to it for good this year i hope.
It's now been two months and the cravings still seem to pass over most days but i have fought each one off
It's what they say about cravings - you feel like you are craving a cig for ages, but when you look at the clock you realise it's only been a minute or two which is nothing in the history of the universe!
Glad to be smoke free0 -
Hi jenny
definitely get the AC book. My daughter bought it for me (I was suitably ungrateful and grumpy!)
It took me ages to read it - but when I did I could see why I had failed in so many of my previous attempts at quitting the evil weed.
I'd give up for months - but still be hooked on nicotine - as I'd always have a patch / gum / inhaler whenever I got stressed or irritable (every few days!) so even though I might not have smoked for say 6 months or a year - i was still hooked.
... its early days for me - I have been here before (I'm only 6 weeks free) ... but it has been less painful but i still have frequent pangs at stressful times.
hey its good to talk non smoking here - I see all my friends start to glaze over a bit whenever I mention nicotine!
I can't see you all glaze over here - so thanks!0 -
Hi Sue
Regarding our 'thyroid' conversation the other week. I've been stable on my dose for 4 years, had my yearly blood test and it turns out I've gone severely hypo!
I'm quite surprised, I know there seems to be evidence to suggest that stopping smoking can trigger this but I would have thought that being on replacement it wouldn't have effected me, plus I'm still taking nicotine!
At least I know now why I've not been feeling great and it strengthens my conviction that there is some kind of smoking/thyroid link!
Hope everyone is still doing well on their chosen method of quittingkeep on with the good work
