The Giving Up Smoking Thread - Part 3

Hi there Daz! Good to see you.
I understand what you mean, especially where big weight loss is concerned and care would need to be taken not to upset the smoking, and to then tackle the weight gain afterwards, as most do.
With Underpressure it's different though as he has real problems (he readily admits that a few pages back) and is under the supervision of his Dr with both quitting and losing weight.
So sorry to hear about the joint problem you now have, could that be due to you having quit? I ask as I developed hypothyroidism (under active thyroid) after I stopped, all because of the immune system being messed up, and all because of quitting! Over the 2 GUS threads we've had several women telling the same story.
Either way, I'd sooner have to deal with that than still inhaling fags all day long and no doubt you feel the same!!! Lovely to see you, Daz, it's always good to see old (in the nicest possible way) friends here.

Hi NTC and very well done on getting so close to a fortnight! :T It's good to see how well you're coping with the few wobbly moments, they'll pass soon enough. Meanwhile always try to put other lovely thoughts straight into your mind when the nasty ones strike. Get a few ready so you can think of them immediately. You're doing wonderfully so be proud and be thankful to Eddie for helping you on your way!

Hiya Chrissie! So good to see you've had such a brilliant time, though like Kiwi, I also had to google lambanana to see what on earth you were taking about! I'd love to experience what the Cavern is like in real life, so many memories made there for sure! Well done for staying free from those nasty little devils!!!

Hi Jenny and very well done indeed on being 12 days smoke-free!!!! :T How are you quitting, Jenny? It's always good to know and if you could kindly pop it on your Title bar (like mine) each time it really does help. It also helps others viewing who are deciding which means to use.
I'm so pleased to hear you're slowly feeling better now as real flu is vicious!!My hubby has had it twice a few years ago (each about 6 years apart) and was terribly ill with so much sweating, then freezing....and delirious too.
Keep up the amazing work and keep smiling! Why not, you've so much to be so happy about!

A very warm welcome to the thread, Jonny Debt!! I'll send you a PM in a minute which has a few tips on for new quitters. You've made a wonderful decision to quit and 2 days is really fantastic!!! :T The moodiness and sleep problems are only temporary so be patient and you'll soon be feeling better. Little by little is the best way to deal with stopping and for each hour, morning, whole day without fags praise yourself so much as what you're doing is about the best thing you could do - for your health and your pocket!
Why not put the money saved into a pot/jar so it motivates you that little bit more! Stay strong and determined, Jonny as it CAN be done!!!
Don't forget to start each day with the Quitters Pledge below.Quitters Pledge"Today I promise not to smoke any cigarettes. Tomorrow - if I wish - I may do."Renew the pledge every morning on waking.
This helps in not making quitting feel as though you're planning something lifelong, it helps trick the mind in taking it all one day at a time. The lifelong part you determine for yourself when you're ready.
All the very best, Jonny and let us know how you're feeling, it will help you.

Sue - that's really interesting re- your thyroid. I have heard a lot of stories on a thyroid forum about people becoming hypo after stopping smoking. The evidence seems mainly anecdotal so i don't think GPs recognise this!
I'm pleased that you shared this as I was wondering the other day as to whether it was a good idea to mention this. I certainly didn't want to put people off giving up the nasties!
I sometimes wonder if that is why quitters can put on a lot of weight? I certainly think it's something that forum members should be aware of.
So, if you seem to have put on far more weight than expected whilst eating healthily and are feeling exhausted it would be worth talking to you doc about getting your thyroid tested!

Hi karmacookie, I must admit to wondering whether I should have said anything at first, but then remembered the full discussion many of us had a couple of years ago. It appeared then becoming hypo after quitting was quite common then. However, when we thought long and hard about it, we came to the conclusion that had we not quit it would most probably have been a lot worse - or triggered some other immune problem!!!
I'm quite sure that women are often put off quitting because of presumed weight gain and must admit that way back then it crossed my mind. However, I used to get so terrified of all the other terrible illnesses I may endure if I didn't quit that more thinking just wasn't necessary!!
I'll have a proper look at your link in a minute, thanks.

Hi Jenny, hit the reply or quote button, then when the text box (message box) appears you'll see that at the top it says
"Title:" (on the left). (On the right side you'll see) - "Logged in as JennyJewell"
Let me know if you still have problems, all the best.

it's just a generic link sue, i'm sure you are well aware of all the symptoms hypo can cause. I just posted it for others who may be a bit unclear as to what the thyroid's function is!
When I first got Grave's disease in my early 20s i hadn't even heard the word 'thyroid'!
But, yes, I'd rather put up with a bit more weight than some of the issues that smoking can cause0 -
Whoo-hoo - thanx Sue
You're right about this flu - it does linger onIt's taking longer than I initially thought to go. I do feel better than I did Sunday and yesterday but after moving around a little I realise that I need to slow back down and give my body chance to rest and heal a little more yet.
All I can say is thank goodness I have given my body a bit more of a fighting chance by helping more oxygen to get into my blood cells

I was being a mardy cow!!! Did you not notice. Was fine till about 4pm when the gremlins set in :P
Anyhow didn't know that Under Pressure was on a weight loss plan via the GP. Makes sense now :T
But yeah agree with the other comment about quitting for the first few months is hard enough to deal with without trying to have to worry about weight too. Weight can wait till around 3-6 months (says she to self LOL)...Most folk put on weight when they quit. Not uncommon. Some as much as 2 stone or so which they then subsequentally lose...
Anyhow 1.35..got to skoot. Food shop day

Aha - I wondered if anyone would know what i was talking about:rotfl:
I actually first saw them on a thread in the house buying & selling section of this site, where someone had one in their garden. I am always drawn to weird and wacky things.
The Cavern was brill - and although i'm not a Beatles fan by any means - it has such a tangible air about the place - it feels like you're part of history just being there.
Welcome to Jenny & Jonny - you'll find lots of support & encouragement here.
Well back to the decorating:(- i'm sure my 3 bed semi has morphed into a 40 room mansion - i feel like i've been painting for blinkin ages..
Hugs to all
Chrissie .xx0
