I bought some Niquitin minis to help me through the first few days. Anyone have any experience of these?

I use them (in conjunction with patches). I find them very effective - although if you're knocking back a pack of them a day you might want to think about using them in conjunction with something else (like patches)

    Thanks daveys.

I'll see how it goes over the next few days and if I'm using the minis real fast I'll probably take up patches as well.

I was reluctant to use patches as they really messed up my sleeping habits no matter which type I've tried! But, it might be worth having to put up with that for a while, with a view to the longer term benefits.

What speech to text program is it you use? Just had a friend pass out and fall and break both wrists  Poor old !!!!!!, might be a thought for him tho

    1 month 2 weeks 1 day Patches/oral combination

All the joints in my upper body have been in agony, physio thinks I have arthritis in more places than not. Knee's been giving way more times than not. It's making me rather frustrated tbh. I'm only 40 and feel I should still be able to do things that I can't.

Thanks so very much Maz. I do feel sorry for your poor friend! Sorry also to hear that you're sounding such a wreck. Have you tried Glucosamine & Chondroitin tablets? They're said to be excellent for weight-bearing joints and Emu Oil is good to rub onto non weight-bearing joints. Apparently you can get them online so worth trying out according to friends of ours.

My "speech to text" device is Nuance Dragon, pop it into google and see the array of links there, reviews too! There are 3 different ones to choose from, mine was the cheapest, but it's perfect. I'd certainly give it 5/5 as you simply speak and it appears almost by magic. Now and again I get problems with a name, but there are ways to get over it, by asking it to "spell that" and a list comes down of words likened to what I've said; if the one I'm looking for isn't there then all I do is spell the word out and voila it appears at the top and I simply "ok" it! :D I'd highly recommend it, especially to folk who do a lot of typing or, like me, have hand/arm problems due to falls or disabilities. I bought mine (version 11) around May/June (after I knew I was in for the long haul) while it was on offer and it cost £53 inc P&P.

I don't use the headset as DH already a microphone which fitted in the laptop perfectly. You can get the mics independently cheap enough too and preferable to the headsets, to my mind. Definitely worthwhile! :)

You be careful not to starve yourself, Erme or you won't need to weigh yourself soon! ;) Thanks so much for the welcome my friend.

Welcome back, shinyhead, it's really good to see you giving it another try. It's so worth trying any or all NRTs a chance, you never know, this might just be YOUR time! I truly do hope so.

  • Hi All

I'm still here but I am ashamed to say I have had a couple of lapses in the last week or so. Last week had a row with DH so stalked into garden and lit up almost without thinking! Am having a really tough time at work at the moment and I know it's no excuse but have smoked 3 fags today!!

I am so cross with myself and I know that the cigarettes don't make the stress any better or any easier to deal with! I have gone a month without cigarettes so I know I can do it.

I am going to ignore the fact that I have lapsed and tomorrow wil carry on as if it never happened. I may have to go to the chemist to get some nrt.

Well done to everyone who is still smoke free! I have a feeling I will be here for a long time yet!

    HI All,

    Sorry I have MIA.

I am back and sort of off the fags.
I seem to need the odd couple of puffs of a fag to see me through the day.

I don't NEED one on waking, I don't NEED one after eating,I don't NEED one before bed BUT I do need a few puffs sometime during the day to get me through.

I NEED to break this habit.
    All advice gratefully received.

Lovely to see you back Sue-UU.

Thank you everyone for your kind thoughts and messages.

Have you tried the inhalator for those wee fags? might just give you enough nicotine to get you through and is cheap enough off ebay/chemist....Or the local quit smoking ppls? Or even just a dummy cig (crave away I think it's called) for the taste

  • Thanks for the welcome back Sue, I had a few personal crises such as end of job contract, marriage separation and so on. These minis seem to be working well so far, but I am going through a lot. It's early days yet though, and if I see that I'm still consuming at the same rate I'll probably get some patches. Don't really want to do that if possible, as when I use them whilst I don't want to light up, they send me into a semi-soporific state! Sleep gets disturbed too.

If I get stressed one product I have found very useful is Rescue Remedy from the chemists. A couple of squirts on the tongue just calm me down without me really realising it. I bought the spray bottle for about £8 almost a year ago and I'm still using it. NRT without the N!
  • hello, can I join in?
started re-reading the Allen Carr book at 4am this morning... got 18 cigs left so going to make them last til I've finished reading and then that's GOT TO BE IT.
have given up lots of times before - once for 3 years - but I can no longer afford to take £10 notes and burn them...
am determined to crack it; I've got a lovely cold coming on so this could be a really good opportunity.

o2bfree - Who are u pinching a couple of puffs from? If it's someone at home then it's harder. I find myself craving a couple of puffs cos my BH is smoking next to me. What would happen if you couldn't get that couple of puffs? Would you go out and buy some? Have to echo what Erme said, maybe a nicorette lozenge, spray or inhalator just for these times? Or maybe even one of the cheap e cigs? Bought a couple from Dealextreme and they were only a couple of quid each (unlike here).

That was the way I felt too boschiba, I think nearly everyone buys their cigs by the packet, and so you think you won't notice the drain on the old wallet/purse.

I spent a few days buying nothing except the cigs. No coffees, etc. I was amazed how quickly my wallet still got emptied! I thought what an amount to spend on something that makes me cough, wheeze and smell!
