You sound so very thrilled with your achievement, hoogervaaner, and it is something huge as any ex-smoker will tell you, it's those first mammoth tasks that, to my mind, really can help you stick to it. If ever you get a day that's not so good, keep today's success in mind, it really will help when you relive the buzz!
I also have to admit that I never smoked while people were eating as I used to detest it myself even though I smoked too. Smoke so qickly wafts around and it's 'orrible!!!
ixia your Dr may well be right with his suggestion, it makes sense to me when I think about it. Do you get any of the "nice dreams" yet? Daz and Alan were always going on about them and how much they'd miss them when they stopped taking Champix! They always said they weren't sexually linked (the dreams I mean, not Daz and Alan!) just lovely! Stick with it ixia, you may grow to luuuurv it!! :j
NB. Could everyone kindly use their "Title Bars" to let us all know how many days, weeks they been free for, also could you state the means you using?
ie. 3 months Chamix Thanks a lot, it helps us all to know exactly how far you've all come, it helps you all too in remembering how long you've gone far - a great booster too!
Many thanks everyone and don't forget to praise/treat yourself on another successful day! :T:T:T

I just joined this forum today.
I have been smoking since I was 17 - I am 45 now and have so many health problems that I know I should stop, but I just don't know if I can do it.
I am unable to work and my smokes are my friends if you know what I mean. Can anyone advise me. I can't take any of the tablets as my doctor said they would not be any good as I have already got so much medication.
Also my wife said she wont quit so I will be alone smelling her whiffers.0 -
Hello Donald and very warm welcome to the thread.
From all you have written it almost sounds to any smoker as if they have an impossible task - you haven't - and you can do it with a lot of determination and willpower...and help along the way and we here are prepared to give you that. If it's any help to you I have given up for over 12 years now, I'm pretty much in your situation with having health problems, staying at home and my cigarettes, as I thought then, were my friends so how could I possibly give them up? Read through the PM (private message) that I've sent you and see the paragraph about the good friend v bad friend and see if that makes sense to you.
I couldn't take any NRT either because I also have quite a bit of medication and it would have interfered with it so I chose cold turkey and to be honest it works fine for me after the initial few days. If cold turkey doesn't appeal to you or you think you need more help is it possible for you to use patches which you can get free? Why not pop into your Dr's surgery and asked to see the Cessation Nurse as going regularly to see someone and talking about how things are going will really help you. If you haven't got a Cessation Nurse then go and see your Dr and tell him/her that you're prepared to give it all you've got and can he/she please help you by seeing him once a month or once a week to start with. I'm sure you'll find your Dr will be only too happy to help you get through something so very important for your health's sake!
There are lots of little tricks that will help you through it all i.e. cleaning your teeth regularly, that can really help because anybody with fresh breath does not want to make it stale with fag smoke, and if you get to the stage where you're brushing your teeth too often then put a pea-sized piece of toothpaste on your tongue and swirl it around your mouth it soon freshens it up again without the need to always brush. Drinking plenty of water helps an awful lot, so to does either drinking plenty of Orange Juice or peeling and eating clementines or any other type of Oranges, the latter taking more of your time by you peeling themthe same with apple's or any other fruit all of which is very very good for you when you're giving up smoking. Also buy some Ice Poles/Ice Pops from your local shop's freezer section, it might sound a daft thing to do, but you'd be amazed just how helpful they can be, not only are they cold and refreshing but they also last a very long time and we've had no end of people on here who have given up with the help of those, truly! If it's possible for you to do so then go for as many walks as possible and really take notice of all that surround you in the way of nature or anything that makes you happy. Any type of exercise is great in fact and it also stops you thinking about fags!!!!
Whatever means you use Donald please come on here regularly and tell us exactly how you're feeling, especially come on here when you're not feeling so good. It really does help to write things down and you'll find that the people here are only too pleased to help. Plus there are so many here who are in the same boat as you and have just given up smoking and it really does help to talk about your struggles (if you haveany, not everyone does!) with each other and you always know others can understand you! So remember you're not alone and that you can do this and who knows, your Wife might well wish to try herself, it wouldn't be the first time it's happened!! Best wishes Donald and any help and advice please just ask and write down all your feelings. By the way, men so often find it far easier to quit than us girls!!
Thinking of you and willing you on,

When it comes to smoking cessation, there is no such thing as just one cigarette. They travel in packs.
Many a good quit program has been lost to thoughts of being able to control our smoking habits. Don't fall for it. The only way to keep the beast at bay is to keep nicotine out of your system. If you decide to go ahead and smoke just one cigarette, or for just one night, chances are you'll be back to the slavery that nicotine addiction is in short order. You may even find yourself smoking more than you used to.
Just as success with smoking cessation begins in the mind, so does a smoking relapse. Always. If unhealthy thoughts of smoking come up, and you can't shake them, it's time to renew your resolve.
By crikey, that nasty Nick crept up on me this evening and I'm not over it yet. Having that conversation in my head about going outside for just one smoke, 'nobody would know', imagining myself taking that first drag and how nice it would be, Oh dear!! :eek:Mortgage

on Sunday I bought 10 cigs, for no reason I can think of now and I'm secret smoking this week. I hope when the pack is gone I will stop again, I really do.
I have become very cynical as to why tobacco companies even sell cigarettes in packs of ten, the only people that buy them are children and ex-smokers. I think every person I know who has given up giving up always goes and buys ten cigs. If you had to buy twenty I bet you wouldn't cave in half as quickly. I hope that it's just a wee blip for you Sar and that you've now got the blooming horrid things out of your system. It would be such a shame to undo ALL of your hard work.Mortgage
