    Hi all,

Had my little girl on 5th May. Hoping i can join?

I was going to breastfeed and did try but baby would not latch and even the midwifes lost faith in trying to get her to. In the end i gave her bottles at the hospital and she was doing well.

I finally get out of hospital today (was in with pre eclamsia) and she does not seem to like the same formula but different bottles. This is making me so sad about not breastfeeding.

I tried to express tonight and only got colostorum still and in the pad of the pump but nothing would go down into the bottle. Tried 3 pumps. Nuby, Avent and TTippe. Will mention it to midwife tomorrow but can anyone think what i am doing wrong and also is it too late to get her restarted.

    xx

Not too late at all. DS2 wasn't fed till day 5 and that was by nasal gastric tube. I didn't express till late day 4 or day 5, I don't remember exactly. I was very unwell and was kept asleep the first 3 days.

You wont get much by pump for a few days yet, but if you do want to try breast feeding, get her close to your nipples, she doesn't have to latch on. Squeeze some colostrum out and let her lap at it. Then try and see if she will latch on or try pumping again. But your milk wont come in for a day or two (or three) so don't worry about the pumping. Right now its all about the stimulation. Skin to skin is a good idea too and works with the trying to feed. Make sure she is hungry no point if she has just beed fed.

And remember that you don't have to be fully breast or bottle, you just go with the flow and see what happens.

No it is not too late!!! Premmie babies are often started on breastfeeding weeks after their birth.. it is hard but it can be done..

The most important thing I woud suggest is.. get in touch with a breastfeeding counsellor immediately. Midwives and health visitors have virtually no experience of breastfeeding itis not their job so I urge you to get in touch with the peer supporters at the surestart near you AND.. not or.. AND a counsellor.. the NCT numbers are online.

Some people just cannot express milk or no milk.. it isn't you doing anything wrong. It can also take up to a week for your milk to come in.. it took 5 day for mine with DD3 and she was fed via ng tube for a few days before starting feeding and she fed until she was 3

I'd try just putting her on TBH see what she does.. stick your nipple up her nose when she opens her mouth superwide.. not just a little bit but wide open like a yawn.. move your breast right into her mouth.. don't hold her head and ram her into you that scares them and makes it very tricky... if it hurts pop your little finger into the corner of her mouth to get her off and try again.. remember you are BOTH learning so be relaxed and patient.

When they are very little I found having them laid on a pillow to raise and support the baby helped loads.

    Morning

Nice to meet you alamaya :)

Second all the advice given above. Also be relaxed. If you are tense and worried about breastfeeding, it makes it harder. Sit or lay in a comfy position and enjoy it and you'll find it much easier.

Busy busy week here with so much work to do!

Have a good day all xx

Hi Alamaya, congratulations! We had huge problems at the start of BFing. To be honest, the midwives were no help whatsoever, and actually stressed me and Sophie out to the point where she couldn't latch anyway  Being at home made a huge difference, as did (in my case) having a very supportive partner - it can be a stressful journey at the beginning, although ultimately very rewarding :) Like the others have said, get in touch with a La Leche League, breastfeeding support workers etc. Have as much skin to skin as possible, curl up in bed/ on the sofa and just chill. Get to know your little one, and let her explore and have a root for your nipples. Being born must be quite a shock to the system, so baby girl might have just been a bit overwhelmed by it all. Hopefully you'll be able to crack it (we did, and still are BF), but please don't feel guilty or that you're doing the 'wrong' thing if she does wind up being formula fed.

Congratulations and welcome. I tried and failed to bf in hospital but restarted at home on day 3 I think. I was advised to solely breastfeed to re-establish and get my supply going but I chose to mix feed as it worked best for me.

I didn't get much at all when pumping for the first few times.

    Good luck x

    Congratulations Alamaya, whats her name???

Thanks for the waves & welcome backs, its amazing how little I do when I'm at work compared to what I do when I'm at home:o And you'll be pleased to know filing is complete:j Just the archiving and organising the office move to do now *sigh*

Sammy Lottie is great thanks, she's loads of fun, rolling for England and trying fathom crawling, it's hilarious!!!!! We're so lucky with her, she's a proper chilled out happy baby, laughs almost constantly and if she isn't laughing shes gurgling/shouting about something:DIt was hard last week coming back to work but as much as I enjoyed ML there's only so much housewifeyness I can cope with, and dare I say it...work is a nice break from her:o I'm not back full time though, I'm doing mon-thur full days so get a nice long weekend:D
only problem we've had with Lottie is getting her to put on weight, despite hurling enough food for a rugby team down her throat!! Everytime she gets weighed I get moaned at! The child is long & skinny and doesn't stay still, last time she was weighed (around 23 weeks-ish) she was only 12lb 12oz! Hows Esme doing?? She's putting on weight well isn't she?!
Brave of you to put her in her own room already, hubby wouldn't let me shift Lottie til she was about 18weeks and that was after much persuasion lol
    Is she a good sleeper???

Becles, your Charloote looks ridiculously chuffed, bless her:D

s'pose I should get back to work, I can hear the boxes luring back into the deepest, darkest, dustiest depths of the archive room

    Hi everyone.

Alamaya we had problems breastfeeding and LO was given bottles in hospital. One midwife suggested trying a nipple shield, as LO was taking a bottle, to see if the shape made a difference. She breastfed with a nipple shield immediately. It might be worth a try and then try her without the nipple shield. When I started pumping at about 6 weeks I think I only got about 20-30 ml on the first 3 or 4 tries.

Hi Fuzz. Our LOs are nearly the same age. Charlotte is 2 weeks older than Juliet. She is rolling all over the place too.

I gave Juliet bolognese for dinner (made ourselves) and the whole of the rest of the night she stunk of garlic. It was so bad! She loved it though! I bought those Plum organic, no added sugar yogurts, but she wasn't really bothered about them and they are £1.75 for 6 tiny pots! I had tried using pear puree I had made for her and mixing it with natural yogurt, but it was a little sour and she didn't really like it. Has anyone any suggestions for yogurt? Someone told me to mix fruit purees with Greek yogurt, but I haven't tried it yet. Have any of you tried Greek yogurt on your babies?

Squeak has the little stars yoghurts.. she hates how runny they are so I mix them with ready brek.. Natural yoghurt is horrible.. sour and nasty.. if you must inflict it on her :p try really sweet fruits like mango, grapes, banana.
