Just to add to Soappie's (excellent) post there.

    The OTHER difference is gender-dependant.
If you are a man you will, of course, have (whatever symptoms you are experiencing)
    FLU

Soappie - do you know - if you've had swine flu can you get it again I'm assuming you can just like flu, I'm thinking of my DS, both kiddies had it last year [make that the year before!] DD has had the flu jab cos she's asthmatic but DS doesn't get it, I'm pondering on paying for the jab for him

    Helen x

PS your DD sounds like a very sensible young woman - well done you and get well vibes for DD

Thanks for pointing that out Valli - I should, of course, added to my disclaimer at the start of the post that it was talking about Woman rather than Man style flu :rotfl:

OK to start: I AM NOT MEDICALLY QUALIFIED IN ANYWAY but I have experience. There is a difference between a cold and the flu.xxx
Thank you hon, and thank you Pigpen too- but I'm not sure how to quote different posts in the post I'm making :o

I think If I could sleep without the fever dreams (I don't have flu atm, but close people around me do, so it's really a matter of time or luck) I would be able to function, or at least stay in bed if I didn't get these. Which is why I've always given such sympathy to the kids having bad dreams etc.

eta. I totally understand the Male-strain of flu, and also think there is a whole area of research waiting to be opened up regarding this, and other male illnesses (such as nasal conjestion which causes associated grumpiness).... I'm just surprised it's not achieved funding and been sorted out yet..... x
BTW What is a flylady smurf? xx

NHS direct cold and flu symptom checker

    As soappie says...

for women: if you have a cold, you can get on with things, if you have flu you can barely get yourself to the toilet to pee

for men: manflu is potentially fatal and far worse than anything the female or junior members of your family may suffer from. It will appear long before cold or flu symptoms are fully developed, so it is unlikely that you'll ever work out which one you had :p

Flyladies are, according to Dustykitten, like Smurfs, in that there is always a Flylady who can help with a problem whatever that problem is, much as there is a purpose each Smurf is 'born' to fulfil.

Papa Smurf is the leader of the community. Other smurfs are generally named after their personality disposition, for example, Brainy, Greedy, Vanity, Lazy, Clumsy, Hefty, Jokey, Dreamy, Grouchy or their profession, for example, Poet, Actor, Handy, Harmony, Farmer, Clockwork, Painter, Tailor, Miner, Architect, Reporter, Timber, Barber and Doctor Smurf. Other smurf characters include Grandma Smurf, Grandpa Smurf and Smurfette.

ETA I've had a text. I now know I don't actually wish to reply to the text because I CBA with fibbing, moreover I CBA with opening any worm cans as I have stuff to do.

I suspect the chance of getting swine flu twice depends upon the degree of mutation of the virus itself. You will definitely have enough antibodies to prevent the exact same strain of virus coming back again if you've had it before. Personally, I wouldn't pay for the jab. I've had it, it's not likely to have mutated that much over the last 18 months so I'll save my money. If your DS has had it, and he's generally healthy, I wouldn't worry too much xx

I thought you would have some immunity; they say that the older generation are not being affected by this flu on the whole because it is similar to one which was around several decades ago and therefore they have some immunity to it.

ETA a report I heard last week said that there were 3 main flu viruses active at the moment, one of which is the swine flu from 2009.
