FLU Has anyone got any good and helpful suggestions/experience re helping this. I'm sorry, I know we're not supposed to give med advice on MSE, but being ill is a real, irrational phobia of mine. (I mean I really really can't just settle down and be ill without having a panic attack.) Every time I have flu/any other illness I try to work through it (cos I work at home) even though I know it will end badly, and it generally does. Hope no one minds me asking. Piggers, do delete if necessary. xx
Avoid people with germs?
The first defence stuff is fairly good, it just dealt with a dose of manflu in about 48 hours.. but having a good diet (like mine.. chips and chocolate) and drinking loads (not necessarily alcoholic!) and avoiding ani-biotics at all costs works for us.. builds the immune system etc. I had flu once when I was about 15, I was ill for about 3 weeks and non-functional for about 3 days.. I don't tend to lay down and die.. I battle it. I never ever use antibacterial stuff for cleaning.. it gets wiped with water and a dash of bleach (for stains not bugs) when I can be bothered.
I think straying into new social groups tends to expose you to new strains of germs increasing the likelihood of you contracting the plague.. so stick with the people and places you know and avoid the people if they are unwell.. not much else you can do really!LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -

I'm not too good at these things either. Maybe you should let it fizzle out? You live fairly far apart, don't you, so you might have to make yourself very busy for a couple of months and hope he gets the message.0 -
Late checking in today. Finished blitzing house, all mopping and cleaning done. More washing done and kitchen sparkling. Christmas toys now allocated their own space in DD and DS bedroom so only the usual toyboxes and playcooker in conservatory/playroom. Will catch up on the thread now as kids in bed and chill time. Back to normal tomorrow looing after darling grandchildren so need to have an early night. Been stopping up till very silly o'clock reading and having lie in in mornings. Don't know who it's going to kill most me or Ds when we get up at 6.30 in the morning. lol

Seafarers, oh honey, I'm so sorry you got this email - everyone has said what I would say but sending you big hugs ((((( ))))).
Valli, same as what I said to Seafarers!
Sockdrawer, I know what you mean about being ill - I go into panic mode if I know there's a sickness bug going around as got a thing about the kids being ill. Pigpen has given you good advice (as ever!)
I've eventually got acknowledgement from the signing company and that's it - it's all over for me :T. I feel really relieved and can put it behind me. Will put my list up later but I've done hardly anything really apart from ironing and probably won't do much tomorrow as Mum & Dad up for the day from Cornwall.

OK to start: I AM NOT MEDICALLY QUALIFIED IN ANYWAY but I have experience. There is a difference between a cold and the flu.
A cold, you feel cr*p, you generally have a runny nose, a sore throat and a bit of a fever, maybe a couple of swollen glands or so but you can still function if you set your mind to it.
Flu is a different beast altogether. It's more shivery, achy, higher temperature, maybe some swollen glands, but not a runny nose straight away. The main thing about flu is that you just want to lie down and do nothing because that's all you're capable of (this is the state DD is in at the mo and she is not one to swing the lead).
There's the £10 note test (though when I had the swine flu, I raised the stakes and called it the £50 note test..) which is where if you have a cold and see a note of the realm lying in your front garden, you get up and go outside and pick it up.
If you have the flu, you just can't do it without an incredible amount of thought, effort and the biggest dose of willpower ever and a lot of crawling on hands and knees. In such cases, it's really best to think laterally and order someone else to go pick it up and bring it to you :rotfl:
With a cold, you can generally get away with carrying on regardless and taking analgesics as appropriate but feeling cr*p while doing it.
With the flu - you need to be far more careful and just listen to your body. If it says "I can't do this" then don't - just go lie in bed and wait until it passes. Drink lots of fluids, take paracetamol as appropriate (but DON'T mix and match flu remedies - Lemsip and Night Nurse BOTH contain parrots and if you double up on the doses, you can overdose on the stuff).
In both cases (and the flu more particularly), you need to be aware of the possibility of an opportunistic secondary infection because your immune system is low. These infections generally take the form of a chest infection - manifesting itself in a nasty sputum creating cough. With flu, it's often more serious and can morph into pneumonia. Which can be fatal.
The main thing is, in both cases, to drink lots of water (not too much caffeine in the form of tea and coffee) dose yourself up with ONE form of parrots, and let your body tell you what you are capable of or not. DON'T do the superwoman thing - it will only end up messy

When FW and DS1 had the mother of all brawls in my house so I had to call my mother to have DS1 stay with her I said to FW then he could pack his stuff and eff off too.. I always made it clear if he made any of my children feel unwelcome in their home he would go too..
