Can I join in with you here please? We're looking to buy a house within the next year or so and I want a nice 'cushion' to cover moving costs, renovations etc.
As a family we have a big income but also big outgoings so we are fine but I am really trying to pull up my socks and save some money (I buy most of the food, clothes etc).

Ideally I want to get to 10k by the end of the year and at the moment we have about 4,900 (will get exact figure later). I'm thinking of doing some ebay/selling off old junk to help add a little extra cash to the pot.
    Trying to keep in budget.

That's an impressive amount to add to the pot! Fingers crossed that the car trouble isn't too expensive to fix.

Hi i haven't been here in ages, hope everyone is saving well :D

well just to let you know i was worrying a few months ago about my car insurance since i was reversing and hit another car.

    Last year it was £595

You know how companys send a renewal price - it was quoted £1004

so i went on the insurance compare site and got the cheapest quote £555, so i phoned up they asked which company i was with before and told me it is actually a joint company so they would transfer me to my insurance company and price match - so got it for £555 really happy :)

Now i can save now :D

I'm thinking of moving my ISA into a fixed rate one for a couple of years. I have just over £19.5k but I'm worried about the possibility of rates increasing and losing out. I've read that target/forecast rates at the end of 2011 is 3%.

Have any of you got similar concerns? What are you doing?

I wouldn't fix for 2 years, IRs are going up and soon imho. I've got the A&L 3.2% ISA for this year's money and will transfer previous ISA money into Halifax 2.6% ISA as soon as my current 3% Halifax ISA runs out in a month. I will not be tying my money up!!! HTH.

What 2-year fixed rate have you been offered?

I did the same thing about 3 years ago and it still doesn't really effect (affect?) my insurance much, although I am looking forward to not having to mention it on the form each year:o
