I walk to and from work (30 minutes each way), walk at lunchtimes, cycle and run (have been out of action with an ankle injury for a bit so couldn't run but am getting back into it now). I like to do stuff! Unfortunately I also eat too much so need to lose weight, if I didn't exercise I'd be 15 stone lol! I'm not even as fit as I used to be, I ran a marathon a few years ago! I have been a gym member in the past (and went 5 times a week) but tbh I hate being indoors, I'd rather be doing outdoor activies.

Eh??? Where do you live? Are there really weirdos around? What about the nice bright evenings from April-October? You do well to walk up the stairs at work, but try to do more e.g park further away from work and walk - or maybe cycle to work if it's within cycling distance. There's also Wii Fit and exercise vids for exercising at home. HTH!!

You walk LOADS! I couldn't really cycle to work because I don't always get much notice if I have to go out, and it's often not cycle-able distances (and wouldn't look very professional if I turned up to clients all sweaty and in cycle gear lol!). I like the great outdoors... so long as it's outdoors!

I live in Medway, in Kent. I hate walking back to my car in the evenings, because I have to walk past a couple of pubs. I have anything between a 5 and 20 minute walk back to my car, depending on how busy it was in the morning. There are always weirdos and drunks out. I rarely get to the car without being propositioned in some way or another!

Thank you for your advice. You're obviously very motivated - I'd love to be able to feel like that about exercise. And running a marathon - wow!

I'm with Tara on this one...more exercise is needed (and is good!) - being able to walk up and down 3 flights of stairs without being out of breath isn't particularly amazing, but it's certainly better than those who walk from car to McD's and back. :D

Why not try joining a local sports club - rowing, badminton, lacrosse, triathlon, climbing, mountain biking there are lots of options around other than just joining the gym.

Lol, I was under the impression that getting up 3 flights of stairs was pretty good really. I get less out of breath than my colleagues do! I guess we're all mega unfit then :)

And they sound like Olympic sports! I'm just a little asthmatic girl who hasn't run around since 1998! I'm pretty terrible at sports like badminton as I have no hand eye coordination, couldn't row because I can't swim (5 years of lessons taught me I'm not a swimmer), I don't know what lacrosse is but it sounds potentially painful, a triathlon would kill me, mountain biking needs a bike, but my dad sold mine about 7 years ago because he thought I didn't use it (I did, just not in winter when he sold it).

Now, am I not the most defeatist person you've ever met? It's the quality about myself I hate the most :)

In terms of sleep - see if you can work out what your sleep pattern is as often it's not how long you've slept for but when you've woken up in your sleep pattern that affects how tired you feel. E.g. for some people it's 2.5hours (ie they sleep best for 5 or 7.5hours, anything inbetween isn't as good) or for some it's 3 (6 or 9 hours) or something in between.

I've been thinking about this. How would you determine what your sleep pattern is? I mean, sometimes I sleep through the night solidly, sometimes I wake up every 10-15 minutes, sometimes every couple of hours. I often wake up at 3am with a strong smell of aftershave in my nose, that's weird, not sure it's connected to my sleeping patterns though! Often wake up when the birds sing, but then fall asleep enough for my alarm to be the most horrible thing in the world. I must admit, I feel less tired when I wake up naturally, even if it's 30 seconds before the alarm goes, than when I'm fast asleep and it wakes me. If I'm half awake and groggy already it isn't so bad.

,if you have sleeping problems, having enough exercise can solve your problem..and lack of sleep increases the stress level..so at one point you will just crack up..and they say you need at least 6 hours of sleep..and your body repairs itself and all that during sleep..so you need that..:)

    Welcome to the thread :)

Whatever is best for your personal circumstances is the ideal amount! I save almost half my salary as I am saving with OH for a deposit... but I can comfortably afford to do so. Have you got a goal mind for your savings?

Thanks for that, I know I sometimes don't get enough sleep and I get sooo tired and cranky. :D

Im currently saving about 90% of my salary as im living at home, but in a few months i will be moving and renting in london as i have a new job and this percentage will go down to 50%.

Depends on your circumstances, if your saving 1/4 and paying a big amount towards a mortgage i guess your not wasting money down the drain.
  • Hi,

I'm 22 years old and save around £1,500 per month, have no outgoings other than utilities and the basics and I'm very much a frugal person who chooses to live well within his means. I wish you lots of luck in saving for a house, thought I'm guessing that after reading you posted this question many years ago that you might just have it now :)
