Managed to add precisely nothing extra to my account as expected, but interested to see what interest I've earned on my ISA - hopefully they'll send me an update statement.

    Thanks for the kind words.

40k wasn't the target for anything in particular but I wanted to set a target which was achievable but not impossible. It seemed a long way off when I set it but once I worked out what I could afford I knew I had a chance (if I stuck to it). I think I might set a 50k target next and then get a new car when/if I achieve that.

Basically I've just turned 28 and the money I have is all I have. I'd love to buy some property but live in London so 40k doesn't really do much unfortunately. I like the security that having the savings brings. I know I'm going to have to get a new car soon. My car is 10 years old but gets me from A to B (just about). I like the fact that it's cheap to run and I don't care where I park it etc (plus I have just got insurance/tax/MOT for the year). At least when the inevitable does happen I will have some money around.

Although I don't post on here as much as some I regularly read what some of you write and this site/thread has given me the motivation to save as much as I can so I thank you all.

The best piece of advice I would give is that keep your buffer of what you need in your current account and everything else put somewhere you don't have instant access. If you know you won't get your money for a few days it stops impulse buying.

Let's hope we all can achieve our goals.

Hmmm we'll see! :rotfl: I'm going to up my target for 2010 to £41,000 when I get my payrise and will probably go for £52,000 by the end of 2011.

I'm saving for a deposit (OH is too but I don't count his savings in my total). It is good to have the security and feedom that savings bring. If we wanted to emigrate to the south of France we could, and the money would set us up for a bit without the worry of finding work straight away. But we will probably be boring and use it to buy a house lol.

    Ah poor you.

p.s. are you really going to spend £8k on a car???Do you reckon that you'll find you don't actually want to part with that much when the time comes?

Well the car I really want (Mazda3 Sport) goes for around £8k-10k second hand, but from Mazda themselves, so they're 30k milage and less than 5 years old (and come with 1 year unlimited milage warranty). But I am having second thoughts.

I will most probably end up buying something smaller for half the price. I am not buying it until either the piece of junk I drive at the moment dies, or I finish uni (which is still a year away), so I might change my mind completely.

I just prefer to buy from a garage dealer place rather than auto trader as I know nothing about cars, and will end up buying something that breaks as I drive it away!

Once I've had my pending freelance earnings through and transferred into the ISA, I'll be a frustrating £67 away from my £5k in the ISA target (£10k in total). I won't update my signature until it's all gone through though as it seems a bit premature!
