Hi all - sorry to hear about those having difficulty with Icesave and pleased that the Chancellor seems to have sorted it out. I thought this article was interesting: http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/blog/2008/oct/08/savings.banks

I'm doing ok this month, back on target for saving 20% of earned income and I too had some birthday money. I'm itching to pay-off some of my student loan, trying to resist - I know Martin advises against but with all this uncertainty I wonder if clearing debt might be better than saving. Hmmm.

markalun - thanks for that link, very interesting. I've already requested my money from ICICI today, just have to wait for it turn up in my british account

"But he won't necessarily do that for all other savers who have money with foreign-owned banks."

This is the part that got me a bit worried, luckily I only have accounts with Icesave and ICICI. All we do now is just wait...and wait...and wait...

Not spending this week as stuck in bed with terrible cold. Have had no voice since Tuesday much to friends and family's amusement. Not checking the values of my shares at present as might upset me. Thankfully bought them as part of my retirement plan so looking at them for the long term. Just paid for Road tax - yikes! Thinking ahead for Christmas. Have bought a couple of presents already and have Tesco points and cash back points to use. Won't be getting my mother Eve magazine as it looks like it is going under.

  • Hey Guys! Hope You are all going well with your Savings!

I have a little question .. With all the trouble going on the banks at the moment, do you think its wise having all your money with one bank? No matter how much it is, or is it wise just to spread it around too 2 - 3 banks just incase the worst happends?
  • Hey Driving_Soon,

I have accounts with 3 banks, HSBC, A&L and HBOS, all savings for different things. its generally regarded as wise to spread ur savings out amongst several accounts in different kind of accounts i.e hi interest bonds, instant access accounts etc.

This is something I do and it def benefits me!!!

I am with everybody on the savings front and found ReportInvestor's post very useful and checked out the websites for the regular savers. Couldn't find the 10% Barclays one on their website (could be my poor navigation).
    Is it on the website???

Also found that HSBC said you have to have your salary paid into the current account before you could open a regular saver. I have a current account but have my salary paid elsewhere. Is there a way round this?

    Thanks
MY son, (he is 31 yers if age) has an Internet Savings account with HSBC he does not have a current account with that bank. Not sure if that is any help, but thought I would mention that. Just shouted at him in the shower to confirm ha ha. I know it was a good rate of interest though.

What refreshing thread this is. I wish you all good luck. I also wish my grown up nephews would be so sensible. Maybe one day!!!! Not holding my breath though.

Hope you feel better soon, cookie! :grouphug:

I thought this month was going to be a disaster for me... but it's feeling okay at the moment. So far I've spent 25% of my predicted net wages for the month, which is pretty good because I had a week off sick and will be down over £200 of wages. Payrises this month though, so fingers crossed I'll do okay and it'll compensate a bit...

How's the driving going, Driving Soon? I know you decided to give up for a little while, but I was thinking of you a few days back, and wondered if you'd restarted at all?

  • Cheers Matty!

Hey Lucy! Nooo ... Still have not started up again! I have spent like 1k on driving lessons, but thats when I was working full time so I did not really notice, but now I just think every £24 I give my driving instructor I could put in my savings Haha! Its bad I know *Blushes* I will start very soon though as my theory runs out next year, don't really want to do all that again :) thanks for thinking of me!
