According to my Excel 'Olympic savings Calculator/challenge' spreadsheet it says 43% saved on year - is there a new spreadsheet I can have that would tell me the monthly %? Or if someone can give me an idea of the formula for a new column...

It has been a funny old month May. Have hit my income averages but can't save any of it - it is 5 years since I moved into my HA house and I have decided to spruce the place up to a tune of £2800. The good thing is I do not have to dip into my savings (God forbid!) as I have managed to squirrel away £2200 of the month's income and sold a fair bit on ebay to make up the shortfall and have withdrawn from paypal tonight.

Whatever else I make now for the remainder of the month is destined for savings though which is good news. Without sounding like Ebenezer Scrooge, I just have to say it is much more more satisfying saving than it is spending but I am hoping that the reward of looking at my newly decorated house whilst sitting on my new sofa whilst my DD goes upstairs to sleep on her new bed will be as rewarding :)

  • excellent, sometimes i need inspiration to save!
currently saving for a house deposit - am aiming for £10,000 and also want to save for a little bit of travelling! Since January this year i have saved £2,666. I feel so excited to see the savings increase!
do any of you have any tips for me to increase my savings?
I have opened a tax haven isa with barclays but there is some sort of delay with the account. I also have 'e saver' with barclays and another savings account with them. Was thinking of opening an Abbey 'first home saver' account, has anyone had any bad experiences with Abbey?

Going back to the % of cash we are able to save. We should be able to manage about 50% of incomings after our debt is gone- on schedule for July 9th now! So We've managed ot bring it forward by a week! Very exciting!
After that, all the money for debt chunk repayments will be going into savings. We plan to save an emergency fund at a rate of 100 pcm, house fund at £942 pcm (Aug-Nov), holiday fund at £80 every 4 weeks (until Nov), and £120-180pcm holiday spends(until Nov) Then dh job ends so we'll have to see what we can do...He may not be allowed to work- but hopefully he will have his visa by then. If not, we will be able to use our emergency fund and not dip into house savings! That's the plan!
Good luck everyone. I'll be back to post progress when we are debt free!!!! I can't wait!!!

I'm plodding along with my savings still.. .well over half way with this years isa allowance and hoping to put another £500ish towards it this month too! I've just opened an ING direct savings account (don't laugh) as they have a refer a friend offer going on (have a look on the referal board for more info) and i'll make a bit of cash out of it and they offer a pretty good rate (including the bonus anyway)

My savings are starting to get a bit confusing as i've got little bits here and there so i've decided to stick everything into one (or 2 now i've just opened the ing account anyway) place(s) I've decided to sit down sometime next month and sort it all out for a while!

One question for everyone, at what point do you move your savings to a better paying account, i'm probably not going to open a new account for a while now but was wandering at what point people think its best to start looking around when the rate drops start happening. As my day to day savings are generally a smallish amount i'll usually wait till its at least a 0.5% difference or more between me and the top payer, but just wondering how everyone else handles it.

I’ve been a member of Treat for a number of months and I’ve saved loads of
money eating out. The card costs £29.95 and is valid for a year – it gives
you loads of offers (mostly 2 for the price of 1’s) at well over a hundred
restaurants. Some restaurants give a discount for up to 10 people on just 1
card meaning that you will make the money back on the card many times over
    from just one use.

But it’s not just restaurant where you can save money - other great offers
include 2 for 1 tickets at Jongleurs Comedy clubs, 33% off cinema tickets
(at the Odeon on Shaftsbury Avenue) and save over £100 when booking a room
    at myhotels!

I used the discount code I saw on a leaflet - REWARD1 to get the card for
    £24.95!

You can also book get discount theatre tickets through the lifestyle section
    of the site.

    Definitely recommend becoming a member!
