  • Sounds really exciting. And as for the spectacular fail, people like you better if you are not perfect!
Paid off mortgage nine years early in 2013. Now picking and choosing our work to fit in with the rest of our lives!
Still thrifty though, after all these years:D

Ooh, I see the way you've laid it out, I didn't realise that! Very exciting!

Loving "spectacular" fails too - if you're going to fail, its the only way :)

Can I ask about salad leaves? Have you just put bags of compost onto the borders, and grown in that? I'm seriously considering that, I too have *horrendously* heavy soil.

No I only grow them in pots. The ones we had Xmas Eve were in a herb pot which is tucked up next to the house so gets whatever protection there is.

I refer to my earlier posts about you being on the 'Alerts' wall at the airport :rotfl:.

Em...... 'occasional flight' suggests you'll be coming more than once? Lovely........... :D.

Just so long as you realise that you are going to have to deal with item 7 quickly so that you can get a reference before the whole structure comes crashing down without you. Okay I've lost all my smileys - help!

:rotfl:Maybe I'll ask for it when I leave :rotfl:. The place is quite capable of 'crashing down' with or without my help - one of the reasons I'm glad to be going. Too much rearranging deckchairs on the Titanic :(.

Wow GG! I just had to catch up on the last 20 or so pages of your thread to find out what on earth was going on!

What amazing news! I am very jealous and could I book a week during the school hols please? :rotfl:

Going back a bit, may I ask the story behind your house in Spain? Do you rent it out? A house in a sunnier part of the world features strongly in our future property/holiday plans so I'm curious about how it came about :)

Righteo, off to bed it's waaay past my bed time :o

Ah yes, well, that was an accidental purchase :o so best I don't give advice :rotfl:. What I would say is you'd be best to identify an area and rent first at different times of the year, especially if you can see yourself spending a lot of time there come retirement. We've 'lucked out' to a certain extent - we're in the warmest region of Europe and have been able to sunbathe over New Year (if sheltered!) but I know of people who've bought in Northern Spain or even along the south coast and found it pretty miserable at times in winter. And make sure it has central heating as well as air con. Even where we are, it gets cold when the sun goes down.

We did use to rent it out but have now stopped - we never really made a lot of money from it and I didn't like people staying in 'my home' :o. If you're the type who forms emotional attachments to property it's not a good idea :(. I know others who do it quite successfully though.
