Thanks guys
feeling a bit better now, I've just spent an hour on the phone as damage control, and things are looking up. Trading has completely gone by the way, of course, which was inevitable.
Allergies/ overcaring today - totally! Though there was never a golden age ... my mum was really funny on that yesterday, actually. She often gets women in their 70s talking to her as if she was younger than them, and one of them tried it on yesterday, about the lovely atmosphere during the war years. Not altogether so! There was good stuff and bad stuff, just like now!
Sorry about the bad day, yesterday and hope all is well now.
The good stuff and bad stuff thingy has been on my mind. I hunted out a half remembered fact that 10% of men drafted to the US army in 1917 had tuberculosis or severe venereal disease. The article is here. But how can you know what you want till you get what you want and you see if you like it?0 -
Thanks Tricia
Your last sentence made me hunt up some genealogical records... my grandmother had 3 uncles who were soldiers in WWI - they were all taken on, tho one was discharged as medically unfit in 1916, and the other two made it through. Her father, my great grandfather, also took part (tho in his case he was a redcap in Kent). There was, how shall I say it of my own familysome major evidence of a social disease ...
As we said tho, its not all bad. A hundred years previous to that, my Irish ancestor James Lappin was yomping about the Spanish Peninsular in the British Army, fighting Napoleon. And so were his wife and three daughters (yomping, that is, not fighting). They must all have been *very* tough!

You made me think and now I know where I get my pacifism from (although in most else I am 'knock them out in the first round' kind of girl). My grandfather was drafted in WWII - he spent at the front (which was in Greece) couple of weeks after which disgusted threw away his gun and went back home. How come he didn't get shot for desertion is a mystery to me.

Overcleaning is one of my bugbears (I think I got this from my mum!).. it always amazes me when I see people with babies using all sorts of chemical antibacterial things around them. It also amazes me that one of my colleagues feels the need to clean her desk with such things several times a week! My desk is a bit dusty/ crumby but I'm sure it's not going to kill me :rotfl:
Squizz you and I would SO get on like a house on fire....!

That really was survival of the fittest! My mother was one of 13, 3 of whom died in childhood. My father one of eight, 4 of whom survived. It's quite sobering to think that losing children was commonplace - as it is in some countries even today.
On the whole, I'll take today with anti-biotics (while they still work ) and clean water and safe milk. But how can you know what you want till you get what you want and you see if you like it?0 -

Anyway, didn't update yesterday, tho I did pop back on briefly now and then .... I had a dreadful, dreadful day yesterday, and I'm really proud of myself that I've come back to mse - the dreadfulness wasn't anything to do with mse, but I was within a hairsbreadth of leaving. Which would have been completely counter-productive ....

Actually the innovation that saved the most lives was soap. And actually using it. http://www.hygenius.com/history.htm
That's one of the reasons behind the rise of the superbug - too much reliance on trying to kill things when they're inside people's bodies, and not enough reliance on blatting them long before they get there.

So true.
Many years ago, as a student nurse, it was our job every day to wash down all the 'hard surfaces' so beds, cupboards, chairs etc. Once a week all the beds would be moved and the cleaners did the walls too.
What did we use? Very hot, soapy water. I think they chucked some disinfectant in too.Debts at LBM - Mortgages £128497 - non mortgage £27497 Debt now £[STRIKE]114150[/STRIKE][STRIKE]109032[/STRIKE] 64300 (mortgage) Credit cards left 0
