Trip Report

Hubby didn’t know we were going until his birthday late October, his 50th. I had spent months planning and arranging everything and managed to keep the secret right until his birthday day. The only other people who knew were my eldest DD as she would be looking after my younger DD and some colleagues at work as I had taken leave.

I wanted the surprise to be special and ordered some personalised chocolate bars from an ebay seller. You can have any photos and messages printed on the large size Galaxy bars….so I had a photo of him with the usual Happy 50th on the front and on the back I had a photo of him under the Las Vegas sign and the date we were heading off 16.11.11. and the word ‘Surprise’!

Well surprised he was, I have never seen him so stunned and shocked, in a good way though, hahaha, loved doing this.
So that’s how hubby found out we were off to Vegas. I had sorted out flights, hotel and car, all he needed was spending money. Because I sorted all of the cost out it was to be a frugal trip. So thanks to these sites I printed off loads of coupons…
http://www.lasvegas-nv.com/las-vegas-coupons.htm
http://www.lasvegasrestaurants.com/coupons.cfm

http://www.vegasexperience.com/coupons/
For this one plonk in your email and password is RealVegas

I also had a LVA coupon book very kindly sent to me by the lovely Ferf….and I was determined to use as many as possible.

Wednesday,
we left and headed for Manchester Airport, stayed in a £19 Premier Inn http://www.premierinn.com/en/hotel/MANAIT/manchester-airport-ft?cmp=GLBC
Good clean room, new hotel, friendly staff and just an observation but all the staff I encountered were English.

Parking for 8 days courtesy of http://www.essentialtravel.co.uk/
via Topcashback, £29.99 in LongStay Terminal 3 carpark on M/c Airport.
I had managed to bag BA flights in the sale and had paid roughly £550 each for the M/c to Heathrow then Heathrow to Vegas.
First win of the trip was when I came to do online checkin I found I could also bag my seats on the later flight from Vegas as we had the connecting flight from Manchester. So booked exit row seats on the M/c plane and middle row bulk head seats on the Vegas flight from Heathrow.

Second win was that American Express had sent me £20 to spend in the World Duty Free shops at Heathrow so we bought a bottle of Champagne for Vegas.

So we headed off, Vegas flight smooth but boring, obviously could’nt sleep, watched Bridesmaids which was hilarious, food ok, drinks service fine, crew excellent and attentive.
Arrived in Vegas an hour early and headed off, the beauty of the bulkhead seats are that not only can you stretch your feet out a bit more than usual but also you’re pretty much first off the plane straight behind the Club World and First passengers.

Came through Immigration no issues, then off to collect cases. We decided to travel light this trip so had mid size cases, next size up from cabin cases.
Collected them and then out of the airport to soak up the Vegas air before we jumped on the shuttle to the Car Rental Centre.

I had hired a car from Dollar via Netflights for £160 ish I always go Platinum package which adds hubby as a driver and also a full tank of petrol.

Wafted past the Dollar line and went straight to Dollar Express Members bit, which is basically the booth in the garage. Yeah for Dollar Express Membership.
Third win, got an upgrade to a mid sized 4 door Nissan, did the job, basic car but we just needed wheels and we got in and were away.

Headed to the Desert Rose Hotel http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g45963-d217598-Reviews-Desert_Rose_Resort-Las_Vegas_Nevada.html

I paid £252 for a week via Expedia, includes full kitchen, free internet, NO resort fee and complimentary continental breakfast….but the best bit for us was round the clock free Starbucks freshly brewed coffee.

Was very, very pleased with the Desert Rose, if you go back through the Tripadvisor reports you may see reports of many, many issues with past residents having their credit cards hacked and money stolen….having left their credit card details for their deposit at the front desk. This issue appears to be resolved however I left my $100 security deposit in cash which is no issue.

We stayed in a room on the ground floor, I initially refused 2 previous rooms as they were at the back of the building and felt quite remote but the staff were accommodating and we settled on the third choice. Being on the ground floor in building 1 also meant we were’nt far from the lobby and breakfast and coffee area.
Kitchen was very well stocked with many different glasses, plates, bowls, pans, electrical equipment, coffee pot and coffee/sugar etc provided, kettle, in fact everything you need to cook/bake/roast food.
Also a huge fridge freezer and cooker.

Lovely comfortable bed which was huge, bathroom just off bedroom with an inbetween vanity/mirrored area with hairdryer.

Shower powerful, shampoo and conditioner and body bar all great.

Two tellys, one in living room, one in bedroom, fine, good pictures and sound. D!cor a bit dated but sufficient, its clean and spacious and lots of cupboards and drawers.

Oh and we even had a balcony with seats and a table but never really went out there.

Breakfast was ace, saved us loads of money, fresh juices, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, oatmeal, cereals, granola and yoghurt, scrambled eggs, bacon or sausages and toast.
It was great to not have to think about breakfast and just go and get it…and the coffee…mmmmm, sorry to go on but I can’t seem to make real coffee properly and this was lovely.

Anyways….there we are, back in our happy town, just feeling so happy and grateful that we’re there again, second time this year so how lucky are we!
So we head off for a short walk round the corner to Hooters, I had the chicken wings which were on my list of things to do/see/eat. They were nice but not anything really special, ah well, at least I had them.

We then went off to Tropicana, they were playing our wedding song as we walked in which was nice. The Trop as we all know has been done right up and revamped. I really couldn’t stand the smell in March where I found it overpowering and too much but it has been toned down a lot so was able to stick around. Hubby tried the Cash Wizard machine which was fun but we don’t really win any money sadly. The bonus rounds and wafting by dragon free wilds thing is fun but as I said…we didn’t win anything.
We headed back and were in bed by 11pm Vegas time, awoke at 4.30am…arghhhhh jet lag.
Thursday.

We got up, had our breakfast and coffee, x 2 for me (every morning). Headed to the Wynn where I changed my money at the casino cage.
Mooched there for a bit, played a few slots and then headed to Aria, another on my list of things to do this trip. I had never been before. Its beautiful. We got out MLife cards, managed to have the 5000 points put on from the Facebook promo earlier in the year which I had lost all details on and played some slots.
Then as hubby wanted to hit all the Station casinos we started off with Texas station. Played a bit.

Had lunch at the food court I had Baja Fresh, 2 chicken Taquitos meal deal, very yum.
Hubby had Fatburger, we both enoyed our respective food.
Then we headed to Sante Fe Station, nice place, had a good play on various machines .
Then we headed to Walmart where I bought some beer, Fritos (Yum), Lays (crisps) and other bits and bobs.

Oh on a side note we bought our phones with us but actually never used them so didn’t bother buying the top up cards that we intended to.
Headed back to hotel and slept for a bit.

Then up and at ‘em and headed downtown, I used some coupons for the shrimp cocktails, trouble was there was loads and I couldn’t eat them both, hubby doesn’t eat shrimp/prawn.
Went to El Cortez, got $10 free play, managed to mooch about and keep playing for a while with this became $20.

Funniest Vegas moment, as we walked up to have a look at the Heart Attack Grill http://www.heartattackgrill.com/index2.html
We saw a very butch looking transvestite, very tall and wide and craggy looking, walk into the HAG and then have to put on an operating gown to be served….just hilarious.

Then went to Binions and then Golden Nugget to see the waterslide through the sharks thing, lovely to see, freezing that night though so we headed back inside sharpish.

Then we went to Main Street Station and of course, lost on the slots.

Friday

Breakfast and coffee, headed out to Boulder City, spotted the Diner http://www.southwestdinernv.com/
we mean to visit on another visit, we were’nt hungry when we got there so headed on. Went for a drive to Nelson http://www.ghosttowns.com/states/nv/nelson.html

This was a strange drive, I saw a very large spider on the road which hubby completely disbelieved me about until we came upon another one….I did google when we got back and yep they live out this way…I got a photo but haven’t uploaded them yet. I thought it was a tarantula it was that big.
We carried on down the road to the Colorado River. It was a beautiful spot but we didn’t stay long. We passed a dog on the road but didn’t stop in case it was wild, we had no water with us either…hubby thought it must be from one of the nearby little townships/villages/settlements but why would a dog wander so far? I dunno, it bothered me but we also daren’t take any chances. So we carried on.

We headed back towards Las Vegas stopping off at Railroad Pass, one off hubbys checklist. Played the slots a bit but both lost…it’s a good little casino, quite busy and had the Hangover slot, which I lost my money on, after having quite a long play on the machine.

Then we came upon Sunset Station –remember we’re doing the Station Casinos Tour.
We liked, hubby won $175 on Blackjack, I got half. We have a fab system that works for us whereby whatever one wins we give the other half, less the original bet.

Moi, I sat myself down by a Megabucks machine and cashed out at $441….wooohoooo, best win I’ve had I think.

We left Sunset Station as hubby didn’t want our luck to run out plus he knows I’ll put it straight back into the machine.

Went on to Sam’s Town, we both love it here, I got the Buffet deal after earning 200 points and hubby we paid for. Buffet good enough, funny how we don’t actually eat that much whilst here, maybe it’s the jetlag, maybe it’s the adrenaline, who knows but all that lovely food and I haven’t got the appetite….arggghhhhhh.
I played on Cats, Cash Wizard, Kitty Glitter and WOZ Ruby Slippers where I won $90 from an 80cent bet.
Left about 7.30pm jetlagged and back to sleep.

Saturday

Awake at 2.30am….gah.

Tried to force myself back to sleep but no joy, instead loitered and got coffee and headed out to Tiffanys Diner, open 24 hours, (another on my TO DO list)
http://www.yelp.com/biz/tiffanys-las-vegas

Located in an open 24 hours drug store just up the road by car from the Stratosphere, this place was a real find.
If you are ever looking for an real American diner then this is probably it. Decor a bit….erm…rustic, but wow, what food, what service, what a fantastic place.
We both had breakfasts, I had pancakes, fluffy and light with bacon (crispy) and eggs (over easy).
Hubby had ham and eggs and OMFG just gorgeous as he allowed me a small taste…lol. The breakfast potatoes were literally to die for, that taste does not come from a packet or a can, that’s the taste of long term cooking and a well seasoned grill. The ham was huge and divine and all I can say is wow, wow, wow.

If you can, go there for a piece of real Americana, complete with antiques in their display cases and some local ‘characters’. You have to ask the guy on the drugstore counter for the key for the ladies….its that kind of a place but we’ll definitely be back.

We then went on to Boulder Station where I lost my days gambling amount but hubster won so I had some gambling money left.
We headed back for a nap but I decided to go to Wholefoods at Town Square (2 hits off my Must Do list).

Oh.My.Goodness…..is it possible to be in love with a supermarket? Well I am, with Wholefoods, just beyond amazing.
I gazed lovingly at the displays of Squash, most of which I’ve never seen before, the salad bar, cheese bar, hot food stations, seafood stations, the displays of meats….one whole counter displaying bacon only, I kid you not. I spent hours just wandering round trying to take it in.
Beautiful sight and I restrained myself like I never have before and only bought a few bagfuls of shopping. This included 6 mini, exquisite, tiny cakes, some crab, some shrimp, an Italian sandwich which would probably feed a small family for 3 days and some fruit.

After hubby woke from his rest we headed to the Cosmo where I was determined to try the lose $100 promo.
I already had an identity players card from Cosmo as I signed up in March but hubby had no card.
We signed up and he got offered the promo spin the wheel or have $10 free play, he spun the wheel and got $5 freeplay…haha.
I asked re the Lose $100 promo and the guy said yep go for it. I had read on other forums that you had to be careful and not lose it on a progressive and make sure your card is properly in the machine to register the loss.
Hubby did rather well on Treasures of Troy, one of his fav slots but came with me as I went to play the Top Dollar machines nearish to the front of the casino.
I put in $100 and went on max play….three spins in won $280 so we cashed out and left. No point in trying to lose all of this.

We then went to Ellis Islan where I put my free $10 on from LVA coupon, this goes on the next day so we headed off by hubby played Pheonix Rising and won $48.

We then went to Bill’s gambling hall both lost on slots, money not seeming to last long at all.
We then drove to Station Casino but again, donated our money to the thriving LV economy and then left to go back and sleep.

Had a nap at 6pm, got up and out at 8pm and headed by foot to MGM whereby I wanted to go and find the Lions Share Progressive Slot, (Must Do list)
http://www.lasvegasadvisor.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=17&threadid=311336&FTVAR_MSGDBTABLE=

donated $20 to the prize fund after finding it near the High Limit room, hidden in between many other slots.
Then on to NYNY, played Top Dollar and Megabucks, Excalibur, Megabucks and WOZ, then to Tropicana and then to Hooters where we got some food, just burgers and fries at the diner.
Home to bed at 1.30am, awake at 6.30am.

Sunday

Breakfast and coffee, then off to Harrahs and parked up. Walked to the Flamingo and the gardens to see the Bugsy Siegel memorial (another MUST DO). This is a lovely spot, surrounded by water and trees its a very relaxing, calming place to be.

We then walked through Bills Gamblin Hall over to Ballys, I went to the Tacos and Tequilas place for the $2 tacos, not on the menu, you have to ask, had three chicken tacos. Very tasty.
Finished up and walked back through and went to O sheas and had a look in Margaritaville as I’d never been in there before. Small new casino and fairly busy.
Headed off to Southpoint where I had a mocha almond fudge sundae ice cream (small $4.00) as is my tradition, with cream and a cherry on the top…..and nuts! Hubby went off to play blackjack.

Played slots for a while hubby did very well although no major jackpots to report.
Headed off to M Resort, a place I really like. We both did very, very well and I think this was probably our best casino play, we couldn’t lose and were up beyond our original bank roll for gambling.
I noted on one I won $120 on Ruby Slippers on WOZ.

Off to Orleans, had some food at caf!, good food, could’nt eat it all although I just had an appetizer platter, hubby had Philly cheesesteak.

Gambled and lost a bit, I never seem to have any luck on slots in the Orleans, hubby did better which was a good thing.

We then headed off to Silverton, again, I really, really like this place, good vibe, won on Quickhits and mooched about basically losing all my winnings of the day to the crackpipe that is Wizard of Oz. *Sigh*

Monday

Started off thinking we were heading to Red Rock, however our aged and decrepit sat nav wasn’t very well so somehow we ended up in Primm!

Having never been this way before I must say this is a spectacular drive and amazing scenery. Who knew the desert could be so interesting.
Went in two casinos there, Whiskey Petes and Buffalo Bills, in Whiskey Petes we came upon a real surprise. Bit flabbergasting really. We got into the casino and noticed 2 cars in display cases, one of which was Bonnie and Clydes car which they were captured in…they also had a display and video playback from people who knew them. It was pretty amazing to see and to be frank, very sobering.

Anyway nothing of note to report, we had brunch at Dennys at Buffalo Bill’s, and headed back to Vegas. Stopping off briefly at Jean to see their casino on the way back and notice the correctional facility high on the desert hillside, it must get really hot there in summer.

Managed to find out way to Red Rock, another favourite, Quickhits was kind and I was $160 up.
Then went to Suncoast and had a mooch, hubby won a bit on Blackjack but I just walked about and soaked it up really. I’d spotted a Cheesecake Factory on the way over to the casino so we headed over there. New buildings and shops shot right up here since our last visit. There is a shopping area called the Tivoli, very impressive and ditto the area where CF is. There are water fountains and waterfalls displays with different coloured lights, quite bewitching.
Went to CF and as luck would have it it was happy hour.
I had raspberry lemonade to drink, hubby had Blue Moon beer. We ordered three appetizers, sliders, onion rings and crab bites and we couldn’t finish them although they were divine to eat, just too full. The hamburger sliders which are supposed to be mini burgers were each the size of a basic Mcdonalds burger here but they gave us 4!.

Took 2 cheesecakes to go, was deteremined to get some this time. I had raspberry lemon cheesecake with a chocolate base, I think white chocolate figured in there somewhere. Hubby had cherry cheesecake.
Both were gorgeous as we had them the next day.

Headed back for 6.30pm, went for a nap, woke at 2.30am (oops) and went back to sleep and woke again at 6.30am…oops again.

Tuesday

Washed clothes in wash room $1.25 wash, roughly same again to dry.
We had sad news, our aged, clunky, rattley sat nav died, so we respectfully waved goodbye as we threw it in the trash and went to Walmart to buy another.
Best.Buy.Yet.
We bought another TomTom but this one doesn’t work in hieroglyphics and finds stuff and has other stuff in it including all the new roads and stuff…..our old one would just basically ‘zone out’ for a while when it didn’t know a road and waft back into life when it felt like it.

Went to Ceasers, primarily to buy Absinthe tickets however the box office was closed so I took the opportunity to basically fling my money around the casino like a madwoman…I might as well have. I don’t know what possessed me, I just went Quickhits mad on max bet, like a voodoo curse I was outta control….well at least until the money ran out, so with a pout and a ‘Humph’ I vacated the premises.
Hubby must of guessed by my Eyore like demeanour as he said he’d sub me some spends for Aliante Station our next Station casino.

Aliante Station is way out there in a completely different direction than we’ve ever been but wow x 10 again. Fab journey, we went past Nellis and as an extra, they kindly put on a aero jetfighter display for us.
Great stuff.

Aliante is new and feels good, again nice vibe. I won some of the money back after long, long play on low bets.

We had the buffet, again lovely, BOGOF ala LVA coupons.

Stayed awhile then back to Ceasers for Absinthe tickets, lovely, lovely, lovely lady in booth gave us $20 off each as she had a ‘Penny’ card which she insisted we had given her…..what a sweetheart.
Again trundled to Cosmo via Aria train via Bellagio. Wouldn’t you know it but our only fountain show was…..you guessed it…’Time to say Goodbye’….I wailed my head off…..naturally.
Saw the Bellagio Conservatory, quick march past Jean Phillipe and the Chocolate Fountain, over to Aria and Cosmo.
Did the Lose $100 promo, lost it very quickly this time, has the $100 loaded on but me and hubby were suspicious and worried in case there was a catch…..well there wasn’t. It was all legit.
Started playing down the Freeplay and eventually landed on a Golden Knight game. Anyway long story short is that on miminal bet we won about $90 plus after the big Golden Knight basically became nearly all wilds, *mwaph, love ya Golden Boy*. Ended up $150 up.
Cashed out and headed off.

Went to see Absinthe, sat at the back on the garden chairs and table.

What can I say, it’s fab, fruity, funny and breathtaking…..but it is a bit raunchy so if your easily offended, don’t go, it’s not for you.

However the enduring memories of Absinthe have me giggling my head off….all I’ll say, for those who have seen it, is the silk curtains scene cracks me up every time I think about it!!!!.....I’ll say no more.

We headed back to our place and finally had our Champagne, remember that?
Mooched to Hooters and Flamingo and MGM but nothing notable to report.

Wednesday Last Day

Got up, packed and went to Terribles, busy today for so early in the morning. Had a bit of play but left after hubby said he’s been ‘propositioned’ by a lady of the night, hahaha.
Never happens to me!
Went to Ellis Island and played my freeplay but alas the Megabucks jackpot was not to be mine this trip.
Sam’s Town for a few hours, mooched and gambled. Had a horrible Panda Express, threw most of it away, ugh.

I then dropped hubby off at the Orleans which he really likes and I drove up to my fav stores Tuesday Morning and the 99cent store.
In Tuesday morning I got some really comfortable neck things for the plane and in the 99c store I saw the exact same chilli peppers that I bought from Walmart obviously at 99c and therefore considerably cheaper than Walmart. Bought some sweets and headed off.
It was Thanksgiving tomorrow and I have to say the roads were very, very busy. I thought it was probably best to go sooner rather than later to head off to the airport so found hubby and we set off. The domestic queue on the road in was horrendous and I’m sure there would have been people who would miss their flights. We sailed passed on the shuttle after we had dropped the car off.

Had chosen to book and pay for exit row seats for journey back so paid £100 for them £50 each but well worth in for the leg room. Our super-duper neck things and some melatonin meant we slept from 9pm to 5.30am Vegas time but it was really something else time in the UK.

Final thoughts
We love Vegas, we love driving and exploring in Vegas and beyond.
I had a very limited budget due to some last minute family expenses but still managed to have a great time.
I came back with basically $14.75 but owe nothing from the trip.
I used coupons but not as many as I’d like.
I like packing light.
We didn’t win money but we overall won because we had such a fab time together and my hubby had the best birthday surprise ever.
The slots on the Strip seem to eat our money, we get a lot longer play off strip.
We had Gold cards given to us rather than red cards as we hit some points target in the Station Casinos….woohooo.
I, yet again, took my Restaurant.com certificates for a tour round Vegas and didn’t use one.
Each time we go, we get more efficient and more aware of the deals.
I want to marry Wholefoods.

I want to marry Wholefoods.

I could have written this! Sadly I am not as eloquent as you. Loved your report, didn't love the fact that we didn't meet.

Also, you're making me look bad. I haven't even begun my report. I have posted some pics on Facebook though.

thanks for the report, Triker - loved reading it...made me giggle throughout. I almost stopped in Wholefoods when we were at Town Square...kind of glad that I didn't as I wouldn't have to fight you for it.

Sounds like such a great trip - thanks for taking the time to post it.

Great report Triker, I am going to have to try tiffanys cafe (if I can find it), and the $2 tacos in Ballys (was it)

We always get out and about in the car although not quite as much as you did, I do think it highlights how much people miss without a car, each to their own of course

Luci mentioned cyber monday at CET properties.

I have just checked and there are some good rates
https://www.totalrewards.com/hotel-reservations/main/?view=ratecal&propcode=LAS&promotionCode=CYBER11&skin=cybermondayLAS&r=http%3a%2f%2fwww.harrahslasvegas.com%2fcasinos%2fharrahs-las-vegas%2fhotel-casino%2fproperty-home.shtml

Link shows all property rates for this month so just change the date.

I have a question I have booked 5 nights at Ballys 3 comped but the fir and sat night I am having to pay for, I can get them cheaper on the above deal,Not sure how I could do it though without having 3 bookings.ie 2 nights comped, 2 nights payed and then 1 night comped...put like that it doesnt seem worth the hassle

EDIT
Just checked the link has gone back to Harrahs, just change Harrahs (on left) to all las vegas casinos and then you can get a months view (of your choice) at all casinos

I have found this sometimes too...it annoys me that sometimes the nights we have to pay for are at a higher rate than random person off the street could get booking through one of these deals...most times we've gotten around it by moving our booking around but won't work in your situation...maybe try calling or emailing them and just say that you noticed that the Cyber Monday rate for your dates are $xx vs the $yy you are currently paying and see if they can update?
