Buffets - the cheap(ish), fast(hmm), no brains required(where else to eat) option, where quantity is more important than quality.

It's all generally edible, but I've never ever had anything (from starters to desserts) that I've thought was better than mediocre (and that's after trying Wynn and Spice Market, names that are usually mentioned as being some of the better ones)

    That's my alternative view!

    ^^^^This
I'm no buffet fan, DH loves going to them, but tbh I usually find them to be a bit of a waste of money because due to the heat when we go, I never have much of an appitite and generally never want to eat enough to seem to justify it. I kind of get annoyed at DH's inisistence at going using the "but I'm starving" line but of an evening I would rather get a McDonalds (far better quality over there) or a pretzel or sandwich than having to pick bits of stuff that have been warmed up from the buffet lunch.
I do agree with the mediocre bit too, I've had some really naff evening buffets.
I don't mind breakfast buffets because everything seems to be fresher and more edible. But lunch & evening buffets - no thanks.

I agree. Breakfast buffets are OK, but I don't enjoy dinner buffets. If we are not going to a restaurant I'd rather have a Panda Express.

That said, we will be having 2 dinner buffets next trip, Harrah's which is part of a show/dinner package and Wicked Spoon as I've read good things about it.

As I said, I was told by an airline (cant remember which one) a few years back that I had to confirm my return flight 24 hours beforehand, which I did by phone. I wasnt told they would resell my seat and I havent been asked to do it for a few years!

    Was only trying to help

I know you were :) -and it DID used to be true but isn't true of AA and hasn't been for years.

Must admit I rarely bother faffing around with printing boarding passes til I get to the airport -I do online check in and print them out for free at a kiosk at LAS.

I do not do a load of dinner buffets but have certainly enjoyed Wynn, Luxor, Mandalay Bay, Hilton and Ballys Big Kitchen which I believe is gone now

I belong to the "not that fussed about buffets" club and definitely not a big eater, however I am of the opinion that anyone who goes Vegas should try at least one in their lifetime.

The main thing I have enjoyed about buffets is using them to discover and try things that I would never have been able to in a restaurant because I'd be uncertain if I'd like it. Things I've been unable to try include:
    Seabass
    Crabs legs
    Prime rib
    Scallops

    ... etc etc

We don't go out of our way to go a buffet every trip but always enjoy going the mandalay lunch buffet when we can :)

The trouble with that is that you end up trying stuff that is poorly done and getting the wrong impression of it. if the first time I tried eggs benidict was in the bellagio buffet and not the VS clubhouse at LHR I would have never eaten it again. Same with scallops, they must be seared for a couple of minutes and eaten right away or you are in trouble of getting a poorly stomach and the flavour goes. Yes if the buffets were cheaper they would be a handy stop gap to fill you up, but they are so expensive now for what can only be described as poor, that you can have a proper sit down meal with waiter service for the same price or less in a lot of cases. We keep saying the same thing about them and then hear good reports of a new one and trying it out in the hope that someone has got it right, but not to be. The last being the wicked spoon, $22 for lunch is outrageous for eating cold food with little choice. It might just be me but I don't like to have a plate of pasta followed by chicken, than maybe some curry, followed by Chinese, then fish.
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

I think I agree with Stoneman there, have not tried a lunch/evening buffet for those reasons (though should probably give one a go!)... I think the buffets work for breakfast, where having bits & pieces of allsorts is a nice experience.

was the best seabass i've ever had :D (including eating it here since and being very underwhelmed!)

the crab legs were a bit :yak: though - definitely can't see the fuss about dashing to a buffet for them! ;)
