Tara, sorry for being nosy but I am always so jealous of your deposit total! Have you any hints or tips to get my savings started? I would have been fine but bought a car in October so I have my payments for that which were effectively my planned savings IYSWIM. I have started a pub job in the evenings too which bring in some cash i'm trying to save but it just seems to take forever to even see any effect, or the bank balance increasing!

Hi, sorry for only seeing this now!!! I do a lot of what Kaz does - use vouchers/MOCs anytime I can, go for early bird meals when eating out (almost every restaurant here does them, even the swanky ones :D ), sell stuff on eBay, walk or cycle to work instead of getting a bus (this saves £17 a week or around 850 a year!!!), bring packed lunches EVERY DAY, never buy magazines, only shop for clothes in the sales/charity shops/eBay, take advantage of grabbits and glitches, keep a spending diary (every penny is recorded!), use Quidco and TCB (I have made around £800 in 2.5 years), shop for Christmas, wedding, baby and birthday gifts all year etc etc.

Obviously I have my little treats now and again (or I wouldn't be here lol), but you need that. I'm just really careful with my money!!! p.s. that amount has taken me around 5 years to save, and with every pay rise I up the amount I put into savings. Oh yes, and I pay myself first!!! :T HTH.

Roshy, I'll dive in with my hints for extra pennies as Tara's not answered yet (she's probably at work). We started overpaying our mortgage 5 years ago when the kids were 2 and 4. Before we had moved into this house (8 months earlier), I was horrified about the level of mortgage we were going to have to pay. I went onto the debt free wannabe board and looked at their budgets. We then wrote out a realistic budget which allowed us enough money for food, gifts, pocket money for each of us, pensions for the littlies, etc etc. We had a £200 per month food budget and made sure there was a family entertainment budget.
DH won't look for another job and won't be flexible about his current job which means that he works Mon-Fri 9-5.30. I work shifts. The age that the kids were meant that someone had to look after them as they were still preschool. I went onto permanent nights which actually doubled our money. I get paid extra for working unsocial hours and I was no longer paying out hundreds of pounds each month for childcare.
I then made sure that I had a monthly savings amount for each yearly occuring bill like car tax/ insurance. I shop online for all insurances and pay them in a lump sum as it's cheaper. All purchases are made on a credit card which I earn cashback from. Vouchers are used religiously and the amount saved by using the voucher is then paid off the mortgage immediately. When we have a council tax or water rates free month, that money is put towards the mortgage.
Holidays were paid for by using Tesco vouchers for a holiday cottage in France.
We didn't go out very often, actually not a hardship because the children were so small and I was rarley at home in the evenning. We enjoyed spending our free time together but the house was a wreck too so when we did have to let the kids go to grandparents for a weekend it was generally spent ripping rooms apart and redoing them.
We have done the majority of the house ourselves, demolishing walls, ripping out bathroom and kitchen, replastering, retiling etc.
The readers digest book and google are your friends for this.
Become friendly with ebay! Get rid of all your excess stuff. Gok your wardrobe. Then, if you invest in more expensive brands that you enjoy wearing, you will not feel hard done by by having a smaller wardrobe. Clothes last longer as you are able to keep check on the condition of them. They are washed quicker as you have less. Clothing is replaced when it wears out. I found that a "uniform" helped. I have my "Mum" "work" and "fun" uniforms. I have summer dresses and a couple of dresses for evenins out. Invest in good shoes, they last longer. Buy them new from ebay though. My DM boots cost £20 brand new!
    Use up your clutter!
Find free stuff to do with your spare time. It is so easy to go shopping for something to do but you're spending money and adding to clutter. Go for a nice walk instead. We have recently discovered geocaching and it's great fun!
Do your present shopping all year round, carry a list of people you've got to buy for and write down their gifts as you buy them. No overspending then.
    Go Oldstyle, saves money!
Rather than buying yourself things, hint heavily when you see something you fancy. Someone, somewhere will be able to get it at a discount for you if they have enough notice.
(I could go on but I think I've gone on long enough!)

Sorry for being so OT guys, but it's close to my heart :D.

    Great post xo

Hmmm. I'd be inclined to say that swapping an unsuitable toiletry item for another toiletry would be fair game, but swapping something that wouldn't have been in the stash otherwise for something that will add to the stash......I would call that a FAIL! :D Soooooorry! :rotfl:

As for the Boots 75% sale - I've been determinedly thinking that I "must" go and take a look, until earlier on when I suddenly though "Why? There's nothing I need or want!" so I shan't bother! :p

Ah, thank you for your pearls -I of course know you speak the truth - however, I have not failed yet as I sought advice prior to committing any offences!! Going to be a bit tricky though as the exchange is at the Body shop....hmmm....LOL!!:)
Stay strong with the Boots sale....if anything can break you, the 75% sale will!! :T
Less stuff, more life, love, laughter and cats!
Even if I'm on the shopping threads, it doesn't mean I'm buying! Sometimes it's good to just look and then hit the CLOSE button!

Well my resolve not to shop to cheer myself up has been sorely tested this week.

Pranged my car Saturday, got a fine for forgetting to validate my tube ticket today and.....this one will bring a tear to your eye....found out I had won £1,000 in a competition yesterday but because my house is so full of clutter I hadn't noticed and the closing date to claim my prize was July 2010. :(:(:(:(:(:(

I'm trying to be strong........you guys on here are helping me....! :T
I'm valuing the important things in life like my family friends and pets.....but I may have to go and play with my S&G box to heal properly.....!!

Oh you poor (julie) bunny. Soudns like the scene in a comedy, but anything but funny in real life. enjoy your pampering.

How about a visual aide memoir too? Get a picture of a house/ flat/ whatever you want to buy. Divide the picture into 120 squares and each time you have £100 saved, cross off another square.
I read a book called the automatic millionaire by Richard Bach and he talked about paying yourself first. So don't save what's left, pay your savings first and then live off the rest. It's a brilliant book but I lent it out and never got it back :(
Love this. Heard the idea of a picture of ahouse stored in your purse - preferably wrapped around my Boots advantage points...

Huge hugs to those in need (quite a few of us at the moment) xxx :A
:) Declutter 300 things in December challenge, 9/300. Clear the living room. Re-organize storage

Less things. Less stuff. More life.
 Fab thread: Long daily walks

@roshydoshy @tara Debenhams cancelled my order for the 1 cent showergels:( Didn't need them anyway but I like a bargain.

I'm going to the Boots 75% sale too but after that I am taking this challenge very seriously because I have way too much beauty clutter.

Does anybody have any of the Joules cosmetics sets from Boots? That's what I want in the 75% sale (+ a Ferne Cotton hat box).

Boo to Debenhams! I haven't had an email yet but am bound to get one. Never mind, it was worth a try!

Good luck in the Boots sale xo
    Afternoon ladies,

Glad to see so many UU! Well done, wish my stash was getting smaller!

I've had some bad news about a close family member today. I normally perk myself up with a body butter or make-up but Obviously I don't want to buy anything! So my question is, how do you ladies cheer yourselves up?

Sorry to hear that. You could have a nice pampering session maybe? Use all your best stuff and read a nice book/watch a good film afterwards. :)

  • A solution to not buying in the Boots 75% off sale:

get complications from a chest infection and strict orders from the doc to rest and do absolutely nothing.

Feeling sorry for myself, but I'm at least proud to announce that when I got my antibiotics today I walked past some shelves in T's announcing some good 3 for 2 deals etc. Picked up a mouthwash, wondered whether to get it, decided I didn't need one yet and put it back. TBH I just wanted to get back home, but even so...

    Why won't it end???

Because you want it to - my BS horrible orange/clove BB that my lovely cousings bought me for Christmas is doing ..... the further down the pot I get, the more i dislike it - it leaves me feeling really clammy and sticky - even the next day !!! :(

cant remember who it was who had something that crept up on them and went "BOO!!" - Its obviously a relation of the Sweet Snuggles that I had an ongoing saga with a few months ago.... just as I thought Id seen it off - another would appear!!
Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup
  • Another UU to report

Lush Ickle baby bot ballistic WIBA? Don't think so, it didn't really do much except turn the water a pale blue colour, mixed with a candy cane bubble bar it wasn't a good mix really.
