Please look at the small print on this though. You will notice it says basically only valid for x amount of slots.
And nowhere does it say if slots are filled you will be notified that the full charge will be applied.

Don't give them your custom in the first place, go to another MOT test station and then you will not need to complain to anyone!

VOSA increased maximum permissible charge for an MOT test from £50.35 to £53.10 on July 1st of this year - and they usually allow test stations a small increase of this nature annually.

They haven't overcharged you, it sounds more like your Ford garage just haven't put up their updated price sheet from VOSA on the board yet.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!

My garage says that, because my car has failed on a brakes-related issue, they have to charge me the full MOT cost again if I get the repairs done somewhere else and then take it back to them for a retest. Is this true? Martin's article says it should be half-price for a retest within 10 days, and doesn't mention anything about brakes.

I'm not going to use the garage that said that by the way! I just want to know if they're legit or not.

    Read what VOSA say here

So if I read that correctly, they SHOULDN'T insist on a full re-test just because it failed on brakes?

So they're breaking the rules? Who should I report them to?!

Nevermind :-) I phoned VOSA on 0845 600 5977 and they put me in touch with my local enforcement officer. It was all very quick - I wasn't kept on hold for hours or anything. I think anyone that suspects MOT shennanigans should do the same - maybe these garages would be less tempted to 'find' problems if more people did!

So I've read through all 20 pages and nobody mentions a text centre in or near Reading. Some interesting posts though....

Can anyone help with Reading, Wokingham, Slough, Newbury, Maidenhead etc? I am getting my first MOT soon (always borrowed BF's car) and I'm worried about being charged a fortune. Which I do not have. . . .

You can take the car in up to a month early. Get them to do a test and report. If it passes, great, if not then you have time to organise the work yourself cheaper or save the money, and then take it back for retest within that month.

Sorry, dont know anywhere in your area for MOTs though :(

  • My MOT expires next week; I've just tried booking it in at the Coventry Council test centre. They're fully booked for the next 3 weeks and advised that anyone requiring an MOT should book it 4 weeks in advance.
some people grin and bear it, others smile and do it :)
