Not a council site but anyone in the Heathrow area should try Berkeley MOT's in Cranford - their selling point is that they don't do repairs just MOT's (tyres, bulbs & wipers supplied only). They are all genuine guys and always try to help. I have used them for 15yrs.

How do garages who dont do MOTs have the Necessary equipment (the rolling brake test for example) to check you car properly?0

Just wanted to say, that as a posh-sounding guy on a low income (it's a curse!) my old garages I went to in Manchester used to take one look at me at MOT time and I frequently got the impression that they were booking their next family holiday in Barbados in their head! (I'm talking household names in the car repair world here too!) I smelled a rat when I told them I couldn't afford food for the next month at this rate and they suddenly revised the £800 they'd quoted me to round about £200 (I can only assume they imagined anyone with my accent must be minted!) Trouble is you can't call their bluff, because if you understood how to fix your own car, you'd be doing it.
I was averaging between £800 and £2000 a year for "we can't let you drive it away in that state mate, it's not roadworthy" until I went to the Government MOT centre in Oldham. Suddenly the Renault 5 that used to cost £2000 per annum to fix cost me £32 for an MOT and that was that. No problems.
Wierd isn't it?

Do not be under the impression that dodgy MOTs are a thing of the past. I have bought 2 classic cars in the last 12 months, both had faults which should have been found during the test. These are serious faults with the brakes. The first one the brakes were just not good enough, after a lot of expense and a test 1 year later revealed that there was no braking effect at all at the rear. In fact there was no fluid in the system past the rear axle. The second vehicle whilst being delivered by trailer with a test 3 days old and less than 2 miles covered, brake fluid was pouring from the nearside front wheel. I dread to think what would have happened if I had driven it home. Get out for the MOT station is that at the time of the test these faults were not present, who are they kidding. My advice is, watch the MOT as you are entitled to do, if you do not know anything about cars take someone who does. As all things in life sadly trust no one.0
