As for cheap MOT's, Regal Cars in Cambridge Road usually do 1/2 price tests and Hartwells Vauxhall nearby on the Avenue had a £20 offer on in the summer.

Just called Hartwell Vauxhall on the Avenue in Southampton. Asked what they charged for an MOT, and they quoted £44.something. Said I'd heard that they had a deal on, and they offered to do it for £22.000 -
Found a good MOT centre in Liverpool.
North West Transmissions, Stanley Road. (Bootle/Kirkdale)
They only do Mot's and transmission repairs. As the transmission/gearbox is not part of the MOT they have no motivation to fail your car for profit.0 -
Hi all.
I live in Norwich, Norfolk and can't find a test centre. I have enquired via email and can't get a response (perhaps I'm asking the wrong department).
Does anyone know of a centre in my area?
Cheers. :cool:0 -

Although you posted this over a year ago, I guess you need to retest every year, so...
For a couple of years now I've "Bill and Bob" MOT test centre in Coventry. They only do MOT's. £42 last time, and free retest when I went back after repairs done.

North Lanarkshire Council publish the details on their website. The depot is in Bellshill, and their listed cost for a standard road car is £40. You need to book in advance.
In contrast, I had my first MOT for my 03-plate Punto last week, went to a local small garage I've been using for years, and paid £40 to get a clean bill of health. Go figure0 -
They don't only do MOT they do the whole repair thing just like a normal garage would and as said before they can, and do, cancel at short notice if they have an emergency ambulance repair. I have found that they are reliable repairers but not cheaper than other garages and you often have to wait for your car back - this is okay for me as I don't work but might be a problem for others.

Still nowhere in Plymouth AndyBoy. There's a guy I was chatting to in the pub that said there's a place close to MarshMills that just passes everything, but personally I would actually like it tested properly!
Still no test centres listed in Cornwall or Devno - amazing! Long drive to Bristol from Penzance. I'll get on this when i get home.Order of events: Banks lose our money -> get bailed out -> were inflating GBP to cover it -> now taxing us -> next will grab your funds direct -> things get really desperate to balance the books. What should have happened?: banks go bust and we lost our money much quicker0 -
In reply to numerous items about MOT test centres I would like to put a few misconceptions right regarding rules on retests. I own a totally independent private testing station carrying out tests on vehicles up to 3500kg. If a customers vehicle fails its test on 'minor items'- this list includes such items as lights, emmissions, seat belts, mirrors, tyres (on certain classes of vehicles) etc, the definitive list is displayed at every test station- then if the vehicle is taken away from the test station for repair it must be presented for retest by the end of the following working day. If the vehicle fails on any other item not on the 'minor items' list and it is removed from the test station, no matter when it comes back it must have a full MOT test again. These are VOSA rules and with the computerised testing regime now in place it easy for VOSA examiners to check whether this is being carried out. In fact it is not possible to carry out a retest on a vehicle that does not fulfill the above criteria as when the vehicle is registered for the retest the computer system rejects the vehicle as either being out of time or having a different mileage to the original test.
For an indepent station like ourselves this does present a real problem, firstly as we do not carry out repairs we would much sooner see the vehicle pass 1st time thus negating the need for us to retest the vehicle free of charge. Secondly if we have to carry out a full test again this increases our workload to unacceptable levels and we also have to then take £80 from the customer instead of £40 which when we rely on repeat business is not good!!
There is some talk from VOSA that these rules are due to change to bring them in line with their own HGV test stations that only retest the failed items, but at the moment if anyone out there is getting their vehicle retested outside these strict criteria then it can only be by the testing station that they are using bending the rules at great risk to their MOT Testing licence.
In one of the threads it was advised that you have your vehicle tested up to30 days before your existing test expires, this is good advice and certainly helps us, however whilst you may still be running around with on the face of it a valid test certificate, if the vehicle failed it test you would then be using a vehicle that may not comply with Construction and Use legislation so you would be advised to get the faults rectified sooner than later.
Finally, a word of warning, whilst the MOT test is a comprehensive check of your vehicle the pass criteria of items can be as low as 40% of the standard of when they were new- for example the service brake pass limit is 50% efficiency and the handbrake pass limit is 16% on vehicles with dual braking systems- so please don't substitute an annual test for a regular service.0 -
