You're not going to like this - but since 2004, when ODCOM made the requirement that networks could not 'count' SIMS that were not used to make a chargeable event every 180 days, they become inactive, and 30 days after that any credit is lost.

ALL networks do this, and it remains an imperative for all PAYG customers to make at least 1 chargeable event (call/text) to keep the account active. Use it, or lose it.

If you look at the T&C's you'll see that this is actually stated - and due to the casual nature of PAYG, with no SIM to attach any credit to, it just evaporates into the company's profit margin.

If you didn't make yourself aware of this - it's been an expensive lesson, but they - and the others - have done nothing wrong.
  • Oh, so all mobile phone companies are thieving b'stards then. Why am I not surprised?

There are not an infinite number of mobile telephone numbers available and if the number is not used for 6 plus months, the number gets disconnected and returned to the originating network for recycling before being reissued.

This is in the terms and conditions which you agreed to when you activated and used you SIM.

If the credit was important to you, it would have been your responsibility to make sure you kept the SIM active and used the service.
  • So if I tell the CEO of Vodafone that I'm going round his house and helping myself to £40, then do it, it's ok because I told him first?

Its all about taking personal responsibility and making sure you kept that SIM active.

Vodafone, like all the other networks have this covered in the terms and conditions. You use the SIM and keep it active, or it gets disconnected.

You will have to learn from your mistake and make sure you are fully aware of the importance of making a chargeable event before the cut off period.

I disagree, if you have a credit balance nowhere does Ofcom nor UK legislation say they can not refund or recredit to a new sim to you it on sim deactivation, its a cartel movement. Imagine you put £40 in your bank and left it there & "that's our now, you did not use the account for xx days".....no way in a small claims court could any network justify not refunding you your money, just because you dont use it no-one can make you lose it, just the number attatched to the sim.

I've fought several networks/mvno's on it over a decade & when you send pre court action notice, they send a cheque.
SO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... You will be leaving the UK aswell as Europe ;)

Thanks for that - good advice that I intend to follow. I'm not bothered about the numbers but the money is a matter of principle - theft is theft no matter how much you try to dress it up.

I have exactly the same beef as you with Vodafone, and in about the same time scale. Vodafone is the only network that can be reliably received in our village, so I bought a £10 phone and PAYG SIM for emergency use. There was probably only about £5 credit left when they deactivated it and stole the money, but it's the principal that make me see red. They were quick enough to send a new SIM and number, but refuse to credit the money on the old SIM. OK, it's buried in the Ts&Cs but I really don't care, as you say theft is theft.

Could the Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977 apply?

    Hello

I would start by saying that I have done the biggest mistake of my life by using vodafone service. I was happy using airtel for the past 10 years.

Now my problem is that unfortunately I bought vodafone mifi device and a postpaid connection for data usage on the device. My primary reason for buying the device was to use good quality Internet while on international roaming. I bought it from Raj Bhavan road store. I was told that once it is activated in india it will work on international roaming as well and no further queries or paper work is required. But now when on roaming, the device is not working as in there is no Internet connection, which further means that if the international roaming service is not restored by today evening, I am going to have a huge loss in my business(all thanks to vidafone). On calling the customer care I am being told that international roaming is not activated on my number and it will take another 2 days to get activated. And that too after I make a request o ur Vodafone store an they do verification and all.

My question is don't you train your staff before employing them? I asked them repeatedly if anything more is required for international roaming and they no it is all perfect. And now I am into this mess.

    And at last

    I HATE VODAFONE

I am being punished for leaving Airtel after being their loyal customer for so many years. Vodafone sucks.

I have already submitted a complaint through the contact form on the website, but all I get back is the same old reply from people who sound as if they have made up their names. I have given Vodafone 7 days to refund my money before court action is commenced.
