Having worked in retail for many years I can understand your frustration and annoyance at this member of staff as not all staff think it is their job! If they were to work on checkout or other department Some (not all) seem to think shop floor queries are not their responsibility and they should not be bothered on their way to or from a break (much to the annoyance of customers and shop floor staff).

Should you have had to wait 30 minutes to speak to a manager (after all it won't be the store manager, it would be the duty manager which would be any department manager who had that job for their shift)? No that was out of order no matter how busy they are you should have been dealt with as soon as they could.

Should you have been expected to pay for the goods - Yes.

You are right to persue the lack of customer service you received and receive an appology.

Perhaps if you had gone in to buy your vol au vent cases at the beginning of december, instead of the day before xmas eve, you may have been taken to said product with a cheery smile and a thank you for shopping at morrisons.

OP probably wanted fresh not one's nearly a month old that might taste stale or have gone off by the time she went to use them.

I found some shop floor staff equally unhelpful when I was on checkouts. People on checkouts don't get trained to use the guns that can check stock levels, therefore I had to ask someone on shop floor to check yet they get really annoyed about it. Yet I would quite happily do price enquiries on the checkout for them.

This was Sainsburys though where they train their staff to have at least some level of customer service. I don't think they bother at Morrisons, the only supermarket where the checkout operators don't say a word.

Instead you more than likely asked a person who was already helping 2 other people out, who cannot find things and also has the manager screaming at him, that the bread is running low and you need to brush up the isle, then help out joe on the freezer section, before you go and fill up the sprouts which dissapeared within 30 seconds of previously being filled up.

You dont know what he had on at that time, possibly he didnt even work on the shop floor anyway.

Perhaps, he could have answered you in a different way, like ' sorry i do not know, but have you tried the freezer section?' but everyone is different, that is what makes us unique.

The only way you would achieve ' nirvana' in your shopping at xmas is that the store takes on 100 more staff to act as customer helpers, but everyone would complain that the prices have gone up, in order to pay their wages. you're dammed if you do, dammed if you dont.

I feel that as long as the shelves are kept full, i dont need to ask for help. It is when they are empty and staff are standing around chatting, then that is the time to complain

Why do shops open the last week before Christmas, then?
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark
  • You may be making too much fuss but you were given service that wasn't up to your expectations at least twice.

If I had been the Manager then I would have given you the vol-a-vents, apologised and wished you a Merry Christmas
It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical

  • I don't think you were making a fuss about nothing to be honest, I've been in similar situations before now.

I assume you have been to every check out in every [STRIKE]Morrisons[/STRIKE] supermarket in the world!?!

I actually have some lovely checkout operators at my local Morrisons- I might even go so far to say nicer than the ones I've encountered on my occasional visits to Sainsburys (sorry, I know you thought you were the best!)

Its just something about Morrisons I have noticed, not noticed it at any other supermarkets.

Don't work in retail anymore so I'm not bothered about which is better. I just know what the mystery customer looks for in Sainsburys and if they went into Morrisions they would likely fail. Much preferred the shop when it was Safeway, went rapidly downhill when Morrisons took over.
