I think many Age UK branches have lists of approved workmen, those they've assessed as trustworthy and who do a good job. I don't think their services are free more that their charges are reasonable.
It sounds like what you need is a good jobbing gardener to knock the garden into shape so you can manage it after that.
I think that you might very well be right. I will have to put some effort into searching for someone. Will look for the local town guide thing I think there has been one through the door recently. When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -
If the garden needs tidying/grass cutting/bushes cut back etc then the Community Payback Team (formerly Community Service) will probably do this for you.
Find your local Probation number in the directory and give them a call.
They bring all their own tools etc and are supervised at all times.
I have a client who is agrophobic (sp?) and his landlord moans continuely about the garden so as he is not able to do it himself I referred him to the Payback Team and they go about every 6 months to pull up the weeds etc ( no grass as paved)
Obviously this is not for everyone as not everyone wants criminals in their garden but I reckon if you can get something done for free (due to illness/disability) why not???

I will look into it. When I ran the charity shop, we had people serving community service for smaller misdemenours, and they actually turned out to all be hooked on helping by the time we had finished their time.!
Alas that was over in Oxford, so I do not have any contacts here.
Thanks EE x
What I think we need is for it to be rotorvated? and then the grass laid, or grass seed. Possibly leaving me an area that DGD can dig and can grow a few vegetables. The biggest issue next is the gate at the side that they want putting in!
Something that DGD cannot open and get into the front garden without my knowledge.
I also have to get locks on my cupboards, and a locking medicine cabinet to keep my meds in.When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -
Morning.
Getting DGD ready to go and visit her Mum. Feel as if I have done a marathon already!
She is running rings around me. Driving me mad.
I am hoping to get to come straight home again, and go back for her at 2pm. But it depends on her aunty still going swimming with them.
The wet weather yesterday has left me all achey today.
But the sun is trying to shine. So I may feel better soon., Didnt get a chance to sit infront of my glolite yet. I hope I can yet, as it seems to be making a bit of a difference to my feelings. Not sure how it really works, but as long as it works. All well and good.
Time to get me dressed and finish her off afterwards. When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -
Biggest of Mooloo is having a nightmare today. The car insurance people will not pay up from her car being stolen, on New years day.! So I have told her to go to the insurance omnibuds man. I will have to see what she can do to fight it.
Not her day at all. bless her, its no what she needs at the moment. When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -
The council have just sent me some rather HUGE bills, about twice the amount that I was expecting. All due to the changes with DS going to and from college etc etc.
I notice they are factoring in maintenance and I havent had any of that for DS for two years. And I have told them that until I am blue in the face!.
So now I have to start paying more rent and clear the arrears too. The rent will be taken back off of me at £9.90 a week, so I will be paying that back for many a year to come!
The councl Tax want around £300 immediately.! So we will have to see.
I also must now set up a rent payment to the housing so that I do not get into arrears with them. I HATE owing money, and all of a sudden I am owing it.

Well I think that I will be getting an extra, locking, GATE, between the side of the house and nextdoors fence!
I just woke up to a drunk lying in the garden, keeping dry under my rotair cover! For a minute I though it was my son lying out there! So it was a shock to see a total stranger surface from under a sleepingbag! He thought that it was still someone elses house, then wanted to know where the guy had gone. I dont have a clue. Luckily he was polite and left. But what a shock.
DGD and I were boiling eggs for our breakfast. Alas I lost the track of the timing, so we have had hard boiled eggs for our breakfast.
I am due to go to see the BF this afternoon, and I think, DS is due to come back here. (Not sure I want to leave the property without anyone in it now!)
My splurge on books the other day, arrived yesterday afternoon, just before Molly came to visit. So I only had a quick look at them.
One is Make your own clothes, with aCD so that you can actually input your measurements and it will create the pattern (20 standard patterns), in your chosen size, then you can send them to your printer, print them off, stick them together, and you have a pattern that should fit you tailormade!.
I am so excited. I know that it will only do a few things, but there is/could be an opportunity to purchase further packages for different patterns, and or there is a bigger programme that could be purchased, to design with. (However at a cost of several hundred $'s. So maybe won't be purchasing it in the near future.
I am concerned for Biggest of mooloo, she has been very stressed lately, and I am trying to keep her motivated, and positive, but living with her BF and his family, the car insurance, not paying up, etc etc. She is arguing with BF a lot, and its upsetting her. Money is a big issue, as it is with all of us on here, but I wish I could do more to help her, and have more time to see her. I miss her. We do talk on skype when she is at work, but its only on the instant message side, as she is working. So its not the same as a physical meeting and a hug from her mum every now and then.
I have told her to look for a banger, at the moment while she fights the insurance people. Direct Line is her insurer, and they refuse to pay as they say there is not enough evidence that the car was stolen! It was found burnt out miles and miles away! What evidence does she need? It was reported stolen? Police came out and investigated. Police found it.? I really feel ashamed to have ever worked in the insurance business I really do.
I didnt get my pay out due to a technicality on a health insurance policy. Molly is fighting one, and now Biggest is going to have to appeal to the omnibuds man!
Right lets find a brighter note again, or i will slump back into the dole drums! Cannot have that. I have a baby dress pattern drawn up, and I am going to cut it out in some of my CK fabrics, in floral sprigs. That will cheer me up. Then I will think on about what I am supposed to be doing.!When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -
Hi Mooloo,
I'm sorry that things are not running smoothly at the moment. at the insurance people for biggest. Did she ask what sort of proof they needed and did they explain why there was not enough proof?
I would ask for a full explaination, but I guess that she has already done that.
What a shock to find your 'visitor' outside. At least he left without any hassle, hopefully it was a genuine mistake on his part.
I hope you have a lovely day, away I go back to lurkdom. xx0 -
You could tell Biggest to look on the Insurance board, and if there isn't already a helpful thread there she could post her own problem and see if anyone can help.
I had a friend whose motorbike was stolen from their garden. He had an awful job: the insurance company insisted on phoning him at work, on a landline, and were obviously checking his answers with some lie detection software running in the background. There was some building work going on outside his office, and they complained that it was too noisy, he must stop the noise. It wasn't even within his building! They called again, and he said that when he realised it was missing, he walked to our local stream to see if it had been left there - they were very suspicious of this, and asked why he went to look there? Well, that's where all the stolen bikes and cars end up, often burned out.
I think it took 3 or 4 phone calls before they believed it had been stolen.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Seriously? They use lie detection software on the phone? Can they do that without your permission? What is the world coming to?It's what is inside your head that matters in life - not what's outside your windowEvery worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory. - Ghandi0
