    Morning :)

Decluttered a book to a friend yesterday & another 5 items of clothing into charity bag this morning - due to be collected tomorrow. Have a small but growing pile of non-clothing items in the garage awaiting a bag for those to be put through the door - they're few and far between though :(

Also unpacked the large nappy bag - last used in October, and then only because I was travelling on a long train journey with 4 kids. Have decided that it won't get used again, so have re-homed the nappies etc from it to elsewhere in the house, kept the mini changing mat and binned the bag (too tatty to pass on, and it was only a freebie anyway) Also binned one leaky drinks bottle from the kids' cupboard and 2 free plastic weaning spoons. 3 bags of boxes taken to school for junk modelling, masses of paper recycled this week and Xmas & bday cards sorted ready to take to school for charity.

  • They are stacked (in alphabetical order) in four bookcases in the sitting room.

I've just finished cataloguing them.I've got 1033 dvds of which 982 are films.(Note to self: DO NOT BUY ANY MORE DVDS!!!!)There are quite a few that I haven't actually watched yet.I plan to watch one new film every week.It might take a while...;)

We have 2 bookcases from Argos in the living room with the BR's on, and then more lying horizontal across the top of each shelf.

We are lucky in that when we bought the house there was an extension on the side of a garage, utility and 4th bedroom. This has an unusual alcove bit that fits exactly 3 Argos bookcases in it in a horseshoe shape and these ones are full of DVDs - films and tv series etc. The rest of the room is used as a 'playroom' i.e. kids dumping ground for anything we tell them to tidy in the rest of the house lol. That is up there as one of my worst rooms to declutter and tidy...

I was hoping you two had found some miracle system for storing DVDs which doesn't take up any space! I am also storing them in a bookcase, but I want to get rid of it as room is so small it would be better without it. The original plan was to build large corner shelves above the tv to store them but I'm now getting worried it will make the room look alot smaller. It's a shame the boxes take up so much space as the DVDs themselves wouldn't take up alot of room. It has been suggested to me to get some dvd storage binders and take them out the cases and put them in there, but don't think oh would like this idea, even if we did keep the cases.

Cat04, your OHs system for numbers is just not right - you need to show him this thread and store them your way in future! :)
Does anyone find decluttering something fully takes more than one attempt - e.g. the first time is hard, and the second time easier to cull stuff?

I find it takes a couple of attempts but I find the first attempt is the easiest! The first time I find it so easy to go through and get rid of all the things that are obviously not wanted or needed, then I usually leave the things that might be usefull, things I like but don't use, ect. The second attempt I tend to be really ruthless and sort through with the aim of getting rid of everything!

These days, pretty much all the clutter in my house has already had at least one sort through and now I'm in a bit of a de-cluttering rut as I hate starting on a 'de-clutter phase 2' area! It now feels like almost everything left in the house is actually needed and it's just a case of waiting for certain things like finishing up bottles of body lotion and hair products (I don't even use hair products so why did I buy a drawer full?!), selling some things on ebay, and needing a house that isn't as shocking small as this one :(

Don't all faint but I just gave away my entire collection of Le Creuset to a friend, who's moved into a house with an Esse range and has no suitable pots or casserole dishes. That's fifteen seperate objects and I now have then entire bottom shelf of the walk in cupboard free again. My Rayburn died of old age four years ago and my back's too wonky to cope with cast iron pots any more. There was at least an inch of dust on it, that's how long ago I used it! I'm glad to see it go tbh.
    Val.
  • Well, I 'decluttered' all but 2 things from the enormous Next order that arrived, by returning them! And the two new things are to replace things I got rid of.

Am going to start on one little file of paperwork first - easing myself in gradually!
Enjoying the power and freedom of letting things go.

Sorted some stuff ready for next time I go to the charity shop. Actually did it yesterday and going from memory so may not be 100% accurate - may be I've done a bit more!

    3 skirts of mine
    DD:
    1 pair of jeans
    4 tops
    1 polo top
    DS:
3 hooded towels (DS too big now :()
    2 pairs of joggers

Also getting rid of about 15 books which are too young for the kids/they just don't enjoy, a bin bag of old toys, a bin bag of Duplo and have put into a spare cupboard a toy house DD and then DS played with but they haven't touched for ages - if they notice I'll dig out, if not noticed within a fortnight it'll go to CS too.

Oh yes, and today I threw out 12 odd socks that I just can't pair up!

Not bad for a start I think.
