To sunshinyday & anyone having problems getting started...what worked for me is to move all the stuff out of the problem area eg the cupboard under the stairs which had reached the stage of open door, things fall out, the cellar wasn't much better...put in the best storage you can eg shelves, stack of baskets, hooks etc, then stand back & admire the space. and resolve to end up with the same effect.
So EVERYTHING that goes back has to be scrutinised for when did I last use this/why/when might I/have I got another & is this the best one of the 2/do I know someone else or charity could make better use of it...and only put back what you can REALLY justify.
Anything 'fiddly' eg paperwork needing sorting put it in a box & do it in front of the TV. Yes in future you will occ think I wish I hadn't got rid of X but the alternative is to sink under the weight of stuff and feel all stale and bogged down.
Next job- the big book cabinet which is overflowing , books piled on top & starting to topple, & my target is to get everything inside the ruddy thing....don't care how many I have to get rid of, it WILL look better. I've not read some for over 20 years but I need to look at each one to decide which goes....0 -
happy new year everyone and hello to new people - I dipped in and out of last year's thread. I can't believe its January again and I STILL have loads to declutter!
I agree with onething's advice and would also add, if you start by clearing out one cupboard, drawer, or other storage space, you will then have more space to put awaythe stuff that is just lying around. that can make a huge difference to how a room looks!
I am not going to do the 100 things challenge as I've already chucked away more than 100 individual things and cant be bothered to list them all! I am also not even going to attempt to list all the things "in" from Xmas and new baby stuff as that would take me all year.:)
Anyway, I've binned 4 carrier bags of gibble from DS1s room, 2 from DS2s, 2 from the spare room wardrobe, 1 bag ancient toiletries/ out of date medicines. Am amassing a pile of stuff for the loft and another for the tip/recycling centre. quite pleased with that.
I now need some serious inspiration on how to store DS2s lego in a way that he can "file" pieces from the same ranges together , he has got so many different types and also large Star Wars models with unique pieces. Any ideas anyone? it is going to take a whole day at the weekend with him just to go through that I think...0 -
Hi there!
OUT: 4 sweatshirts
4 polo tops
2 skirts
2 pairs of trousers
3 summer dressers
2 fleeces
All thanks to DD's school having a new uniform as from yesterday so all her old stuff is going back to school to be sent abroad to other school children. All makes a bit extra room doesn't it!Flymarkeeteer: £168 and counting0 -

I have two boys with a MASSIVE amount of Lego and have found the only way to sort it that works for any length of time is to sort it by colour. We use the plastic towers of 4 or 6 drawers from Argos and bung one colour of brick into each drawer. The set of drawers comes with 4 free plastic tubs so we use them for the colours we have fewer bricks of e.g. green.
What I've found is that the bricks from each range tend to be in the same colours e.g. Star Wars has a lot of beige bricks, Lego City lots of yellow and red and the kids can spot the brick they want surprisingly easily.
If you sort the bricks by colour it's much easier for them to "help" put it away aswell..... HTH£2012 in 2012 Challenge £2051.06£2013 in 2013 Challenge £500 -

Some great advice there! Also I couldn't agree more about the getting rid of things you will need but space is more important. I was just thinking about that last night! I have got rid of a couple of things I later thought would come in handy but if I hadn't I would still be living in a house so rammed full of stuff I could barely move about in. Another thing is if I hadn't dug these things out and got rid of them I probably wouldn't even have realised I had them anyway! The other day I brought a pack of drawing pins, only to find a pack of them in a box of junk the next day - very annoying!
I've been a bit slow on the de-cluttering front today and yesterday. I haven't actually decluttered anything today but I did put some old speakers, remote controls and straighteners in a bag ready to go to the recycling and generally tidied up a bit. I need to feel like I'm making progress so I'm going to get the overflowing drawer of paperwork from upstairs to de-clutter infront of the tv0 -
Just done a major declutter on my part of our filing cabinet, the shredder is almost on fire!
Paper, bills, documents etc are the bane of my life!
