  • Am desperate to de clutter but am battling against three kids and hubby who are all hoarders! Have to do it on the quiet. Have places to put things until they are forgotten about, but it makes the whole process longer!!

Today managed to get rid of another bin bag of rubbish, sort some more things into appropriate boxes, and filled up one full bag of ebay/charity shop stuff. My original plan is to just get everything off the floor and out of the wardrobes and sorted into boxes which will make the room look a lot better, then I'm going to go through the boxes one at a time and decide what to keep and what to get rid of. I'm off work with shingles  so am confined to the house for a week, thought I'd be able to get tons done but it's making my side and back hurt which is frustrating :( On the up side I've ordered some mailing bags in preparation for all the things I'm going to be selling on eBay

Also just listed a big notice board on Freegle. Too many items going out to keep track in numbers, but reckon I've probably gone over 100 already :D

  • Hi, just popping in but can't stay as the Frugal Living thread is already consuming my entire life...just wanted to recommend Sheila Chandra's book on decluttering as absolutely brilliant. Can't remember its title but it's still in print. No, I'm not her publisher or one of her friends! It's just the most helpful declutter book I've ever read, and I've read a few.

Well today was last day of my Christmas/New year holiday:

    In:
    few bits of food
couple of bits of post - recycled or filed.

    Out:
Boot full of cardboard, plastic bottles, wood and metal recycling to tip - garage a lot clearer. (missed recycling over Christmas so had a back log.
Emptied fridge of last of leftover bits from Christmas, which didn't get used as we were away after Christmas/over New Year. Now starts the not wasting any food mission.

Christmas decorations all put away too neatly into the boxes I bought before Christmas to help store things under bed. A lot we didn't use we could get rid of really, but as it all fitted in boxes have decided to wait until next December and freecycle what we don't want then.

Tomorrow at work then out in the evening so not much chance for stuff coming in or out but a quiet weekend planned so should be able to get stuff done then.

I seriously need to declutter my house, there is just so much stuff in it, one room (my dumping room) is so bad that I can't actually put both feet on the floor of it, I just open the door - fling stuff in- and close the door again. I need to convert this into a clutter free bedroom fairly soon and don't even know where to start!

I like the idea of the 100 things in 10 days challenge and think I'll give that a go. I also like the idea of doing things in 15 minute spurts. I think I'll have to start with these approaches, it all seems a bit overwhelming at the minute but bit by bit I hope to discover what my house looks like without being buried under a mountain of junk,

I am quite keen that the things we no longer need are used by someone else - even ratty old towels can be used by my local vet surgery (bedding for the poorly animals) - I'm not one to advocate throwing things in landfill.

I had a little tally up of what I got rid of - 50 things so far (but I'm not sure when I started, I'll have to re-read this thread!).

I'm feeling a bit sad today, as I have to take down the Christmas decorations - I love Christmas so much :( On the plus side, there might be a few bits that can go to the charity shop in the box.

Yesterday evening, I got rid of loads of plastic knives and forks and an old disposable plastic tablecloth (from way back when my boys were little - they are 18 and nearly 16 now :o).

Right, on with the Christmas decorations ...

ETA - Christmas decorations done now - 5 things for the charity shop and 6 broken ornaments to the bin, plus a bit of recycling.

    That makes 62/100.
Enjoying the power and freedom of letting things go.
