New Look Sale - No Returns Allowed

just a quick Q to see if anyone else knew that New Look have changed their returns policy, and any item bought in the sale can only be exchanged, not refunded

the sales assistant was adamant that all staff will have verbally informed customers of this at time of sale. when i disputed this, she again reiterated that i would have been told

there is no signage to this affect anywhere instore. the till receipt also states that you are free to bring an item back within 28days for a full refund

so has anyone else been verbally informed, they cant return sale items for a refund?

They actually don't have to. They still have to return items for cash if they're faulty. But while returning items may be common practice because they're not wanted, they have no legal obligation to take them back. Hence they can dictate only giving exchange.

But surely, if the receipt states they will refund, they do have to? I think the customer enters into a contract of sale, and the wording on the receipt informs the terms of the contract?

Any clothes shop i've got sale items from i've been told verbally that sale items can only be exchanged not refunded, this has included new look numerous times :)

  • I cant find it anywhere online, which is where i bought some sale items. And just in reference; what about a christmas refund policy? I have bought these sale items online, at the end of November and due to snow couldnt return them last week and due to christmas have only just got the car/time to return them so even without christmas they would have been outside the 30 days.

Also if they accept them will they only be exchange or is there an alternative of new look vouchers? i had obviously hoped for a refund but am beginning to think that wont be possible especially after this.

    Thanks for any help.

I bought 2 pairs of shorts on the 27th and was in a rush on way to work both sale items, at no point I saw clear visible signs stating this new returns policy for sale items and WAS NOT ADVISED by the staff including the manager who I was served by at the time of purchase! When I questioned this on my return 24 hours later with my receipt and items as sold the assistant manager quoted "well we have had signs up for a week now" is the answer i got......I rarely shop in the store so unlikely to have seen these signs that "have been up for a week" and as I could see at that time no other signs in the store stating this. I am an assistant manager for one of newlooks biggest competitors......I am disgusted with my treatment and poor customer service from Newlook and would be appalled if i were to treat a customer this way. I have just waited nearly 20mins to Newlooks customer service dept by phone to where again i have been treated disgracefully.

As I see it Newlook must be suffering if they cannot now give their customers refunds on sale items.

One thing I can safely say is that i will not be shopping with them again

TBH I'm surprised with your post.

I'd be quite embarrassed to post something like the above and then say you are an assistant manager of one of new looks biggest competitors.

Every store I've shopped in would commonly offer exchanges and not refunds at peak sales.

Is that the law as I was discussing this with some one from new look who said this was not the case during the 26th and 27th if faulty.
You would still have to wait until the 28th before returning a faulty item.

The person i was discussing this with a New Look is a general assisant and not a manager etc so he just does what he told, which was no refunds during those 2 days.

..I rarely shop in the store so unlikely to have seen these signs that "have been up for a week"

And that's New Look's fault why exactly?

Mmhmm? The plot thickens. New member, first post, slagging a competitor.

I'm with Foz on this one, very unprofessional behaviour by you.
  • I bought a few sale items in the Edinburgh Princes Mall store on Boxing Day and was told they couldn't be returned but could be exchanged, I heard another sales assistant telling a customer nearby the same thing. I thought it was a bit strange but I said that was fine as I usually find things I like in there anyway.

However it should have been made clear before purchasing online, also, some sales assistants may forget to tell their customers :(
  • Debenhams have had this policy for ages unless you used one of their storecards to make the original purchase.
