I don't understand why people expect a refund when the clothes aren't faulty. It's not rocket science when you are clothes shopping - if you like the cloths and they fit buy them. If you don't like them or they don't fit don't buy them.

i dont understand why people cant read a thread, and give an answer to the problem in question

yes, we know shops dont have to refund, unless the items is faulty. but if a shop says it will refund, even if the item isnt faulty, then you would expect the shop to stick to its side of the bargain, or have i not understood how a contract of sale works?

In my instance I bought online, however I also rarely try clothes on in shops due to health issues that wouldnt always be a problem if shops werent currently averaging 25 degrees celsius.

I dont know about you but if Im out buying clothes I try to get as much done as possible by going around a lot of shops, usually in a coat or carrying it mostly. So, to queue for a horrible fitting room where curtains barely cover the opening and take all the layers off in the small area and take on and off multiple items and muse over the look before redressing and gathering up other shopping bags, my handbag and coat, then the latest coathangers and trudge along in the checkout queue to purchase these items, is something I can rather do without.

My solution is holding items up to my frame/trying on jackets or coats in the shop and buying what I think will work with the ability to pop-in for a short return visit these if needs be.

And I find the whole trying the clothes on process is crucial to whether they do fit/you like the look; not everything in theory works in practice.

just to add a bit more confusion, I returned a sale dress today that was bought before Christmas for my niece, with absolutely no problem, even though the tag was present but disconnected!
Don't mean to sound like I am gloating but I am just saying as all staff clearly are not aware of the change yet!

extract from T & C of the New Look website

"Please note that with effect from 26 December 2010 our refund policy on sale items changed. Sale items purchased on/or after this date will be eligible for an exchange only"

It type of makes sense to me. After all NL are in it to make money. If every customer treated them like a big huge free clothes library they would go out of business.

It's not you, flea, if people join a thread late they should at least read the OP.

Why would you check when you think you know the policy? People on here are querying the fact that the policy changed without any warning at point of sale.

Most high street stores refund with receipt, although many have different periods, so NL are moving away from that and may regret it.

It has been explained that they will refund on pre-Christmas clothes. :D Though your post just highlights the confusion they have caused!

Online sales are different as they are subject to the Distance Selling Regulations, which gives the right to a refund or exchange, hence the different policy.

...this only applies within 7 days of purchase though?

So to sum up we're basically trying to determine if every single customer at NL was told about the refund policy? At one of the busiest shopping times of the year?

I still don't get why people buy stuff that they don't want. To me it seems unreasonable for someone to buy something then want their money back because they changed their mind. It must put the prices up for everyone else.
  • I had a nightmare returning some New Look items I purchased online that didn't fit. I was told by the sales assistant I could only exchange them (they were all sale items). She stuck an A4 notice in front in me which said the policy was from 26 December. My order was placed on 24 December, yet she was still saying exchange only. I politely but firmly asked to see the manager, who agreed that as the goods were puchased on on 24 December I could have a refund. There seems to be confusion among the staff as well as among customers, so I think this doesn't bode well.

Online it still says that refunds will be given, and I believe that such sales should be covered by 'distance selling regulations'. Anyone returning online goods should print a copy of the details of the returns policy, which clearly states items can be returned to a store for a full refund.

As for the change in refund policy, my understanding is that it's on sale goods and from 26 December, not on full price merchandise. Anything purchased before this date does not come under the new policy. I guess the important thing is from now on to make sure an item fits, that we want it etc. There are other shops who only offer an exchange on sale items, but then this is made clear in their returns policy and by members of staff at point of purchase. Perhaps this is something the New Look staff should be doing?!
