I suppose if you use a credit card anyway switching to one with perks is a good idea. However if you live without one then this is a much better idea. The charges and interest catch most people out. I even managed to have a card that I only used a handfull of times and still manage to get over £2000 in fradulent use. It then took me months and alot of phone call to get the money back.

I was a bit stupid to take out the amex to get bmi airmiles. Its too much hassle though esp as very few places take amex. Its not a flexible friend, its an expensive waste of time that causes alot of people alot of stress. Cut it up now!

Strikes me you're all missing the point!

Hasn't the credit crunch taught anyone anything?

Life is not about acquiring and spending money, let alone manipulating everything to your advantage.

Just sell up, buy in France / Italy / Spain /........ and live life as intended.

I was interested in applying for the Lloyds TSb Airmiles Duo offer to get 1500 free Airmiles following Martin's email tip, but I have found the following in the small print:

** If you use miles or the 1500 mile voucher to make a booking, a £30 admin fee applies if you haven't had any Airmiles added to your account in the 12 months before.

I have never used Airmiles before, so I take it this will apply to me. This makes the offer seem less attractive.
  • Just felt it worth balancing up some of the recent comments made about Amex as have been a customer since 1997 with no issues.

    1. Amex isnt accepted everyone which is why I carry a mastercard as well. However it is accepted at nearly all garages, restaurants and major shops.

    2. Dont take out an offer if its going to cost you more money, that doesnt make sense to anyone. I got Amex cashback worth over £200 last year and have over £100 this year but wouldnt do this if it was going to cost me more.

    3. The reason I got this "free" money was because I'm sensible with my use and use the card for all purchases I would make anyway. I dont buy things because I have the limit to.

    4. I have had three experiences of credit fraud across Mastercard and Visa. This was handled excellently when I reported it and I got full refunds and would purchase online any other way.

Overall as Martin always says, if people use credit cards in the right way then there is everything to gain and nothing to lose, if you are sensible.
  • You can only use DEBIT cards in Aldi & Lidl NOT cash back credit cards as stated in the article.
  • BT Credit Card I have signed up for this card to receive a £40 cordless phone if I use the card in 30 days, no amount of spend specified, however I've lost the advert has anyone else seen it can't find it on the internet
  • Amex and Mastercard and usually the best credit cards to use abroad.

Surprising to see MoneySaving Expert publicising the new credit card from Play, an initiative which will require new users to provide the company with personal and financial details.

Question: doesn't MSE monitor its own forums before high-lighting some commercial offer or other?

If it did, then it would have found this:

Either Play com is at the centre of an impossibly long chain of coincidences. Or the safety of data placed in its possession has a rather large question mark hanging over it.

Whichever, this is one credit card offer my family will be keeping well clear of.

I used the Abbey Zero CC for a holiday in Japan and there was no foreign currency conversion charge.
