See the post above yours. Amex doesn't really fit under the "freebies" banner because they don't give freebies, however they do give cashback.

Do a search for amex and you'll find a lot of dedicated threads.

I am looking at getting this card as am about to buy a new kitchen (but gutted to find out Wickes don't take it - Boo!). Also happened to be looking on the Jessops web site, as our camera is broken and we need to take those all important before and after shots!.

They have an offer on there, if you click through from the advert, where you get a £40 Jessops voucher for signing up (assuming your application is successful) - seems perfect for me except that it says it takes upto 6 weeks for the voucher to arrive and I need the camera sooner really.

Visa and MC are pretty much universal throughout Europe, though in the early 90s I was surprised to go to a restaurant in Greece and find they only took xxx (was it Eurocard, which then became Mastercard??? - anyway, the other one!). AMEX tends to be accepted in more 'cosmopolitan' places. As over here, the same rule applies: AMEX is good, but can't be used as your only source of cash.

To be honest, as one of the regular contributors highlighted a short while ago when his card stopped working in the States, it's always wise to have two sources of finance when abroad.
You've never seen me, but I've been here all along - watching and learning...

The best CC to use abroad is one that doesn't have a hidden fee in the currency exchange rate. Most cards charge 2.75%, Nationwide and the Post Office don't.

Priority Club are offering 20,000 points if you take out their Visa card before midnight.

You have to be a member of the priority club but can sign up prior to applying.

    www.priorityclub.com/ukvisacardoffer

20,000 points should get you a free night at one of their hotels.

The offer ends at midnight tonight (31/01/09) however.
  • Abbey Zero card says no foreign currency conversion fee for using abroad, and this seesm to be anywhere, not just Europe. I think that some cards only have this benefit in Europe.

Pleae correct me if I'm wrong.
  • I signed up for the bmi/AMEX card at Newcastle airport and was told of all the marvellous benefits including 21000 airmiles for a £250 spend, but none of the snags:-

1 - bmi fly nowhere useful from Newcastle
2 - You still have to pay taxes and fees for "free" flights
3 - It is much more difficult to shop with AMEX than other cards
4 - Going to another airport to take advantage of free flights negates the savings.
5 - If you don't pay the card off in full each months, any savings are quickly eroded by interest.

    Adavantages were

    1. The card costs nothing if you pay it off in full
    2. There is no cost at all if you never use it.

My money saving tip is not to get this card, because the use of the 'free' airmiles WILL cost you money on flight taxes and other expenses that you may never have spent if you only got the card for a freebie. Stick to some sort of cash-back card that gives a reward without asking you to spend to receive it.
  • Hi!

    I'm new here...

But, I hope somebody can help me!

I have an Amex gift card, but I can't use it. I tried some adult sites like brazzers, cams.com, but they cannot accept it.

    Why?

Do you know some good site which accepts Amex?

the 36 quid goes towards the national trust though, similar to their other charity cards

If this card had something like free membership or discounted membership for card holders it would be worth it - but as it stands, it is a pretty bad deal.

Annual membership online is just under £36 - would make for a nice gesture.

Has anyone tried the Free Flight with the Flybe's Mastercard deal?

It mentions flight is free but taxes and charges are payable. If anyone has used this, how much did they pay in taxes and charges - just to get an idea? Are the taxes and charges the same as when buying a normal ticket?

    Thanks
