I applied and was not a customer, spent £17, paid the bill in full. Waited for the following month bill to check on air miles and got none. Is anyone getting any further with this problem?

    Hi,

This is a little more complex than Martin's email makes out.

Firstly, make sure you go for the vanilla flavoured credit card - First Direct tried to offer me the gold card.

The FIRST balance transfer is fee-free and at 2.9% for six months might be worth doing (at least for the minimum £500) - or even the whole lot into a savings account - usual caveats apply.

EDIT: I can't see it online now, but I'm sure there were minimum spend/transfer requirements to get the wine when I applied - maybe because I am an existing first direct customer?

terms and conditions for Credit Card wine offer
    1. To qualify for 6 free bottles of wine, customers must apply for a first direct Credit Card between 3 March and 31 March 2008 and subsequently open a Credit Card account.
    2. Offer applies to new Credit Card customers only. This offer does not apply to Classic Cards, gold cards, or if you already hold any first direct credit card as at 3 March 2008. Additional cardholders will not be eligible for this offer.
    3. Your wine will be supplied by Direct Wines Ltd, trading as Laithwaites and has been pre-selected by first direct.
    4. Your pre-selected wine will be sent to you within eight weeks of account opening.
    5. There is no cash alternative. Offer excludes Channel Islands and non-UK addresses.
    6. Recipients must be 18 years or over.

I got stuck in a loop - asked me to log-in so logged, clicked through to credit card app page, asked me to log in etc.

Might just be Firefox, am trying IE7 as we speak.

Edit: when you are logged in, check the products available to you rather than going through products and services as this gets you in the loop.
Once logged in, there was no mention of the wine though.

    .

I got the same problem with both Firefox and IE7.

I telephoned them and I stressed i wanted the card with the free wine offer. He then told me I would have to transfer a balance from another credit card. When I told him that there was no mention of that online, he offered to ring me back.

When he rang back he apologised and said the rules had been changed from the notes that he had, and confirmed that you DON'T HAVE TO TRANSFER A BALANCE to be eligible. :T

He is now going to send me the "paperwork".
Thank you for reading this message.

I've read Martin's credit card freebies article, especially the BMI Amex offer (which is still valid at time of writing) because it could get me cheaper/almost free flights to Russia, a useful thing while Mrs Mothballs is with her family so I can go and see her.

The problem is that I'm a little anxious about applying for it: as far as I can tell, my credit score is good, but I haven't applied for a credit card since I was granted a Visa card by Nationwide (and that's a few years ago now), and I haven't been in a permanent job for the last year, but I have been working.

The main worry for me is that, if I was successful, they might give me a completely diferent card to this one that I really wanted; if I got it, I'd keep my Visa card because Amex isn't always accepted everywhere, probably because their fees to merchants are quite high.

Advice/reassurance from fellow MSErs would be much appreciated. (Hey, I'm even going to overcome my fear of the Halifax and go after any MEAF money I'm owed! :D)

An update: I've applied for the bmi/MBNA Amex card and it seems that I've been accepted, although they haven't told me my credit limit yet; that'll probably come with the letter enclosed with the card.

Yes! Get in! (Doing happy dance around the living room.)

Now all I have to do is put the 250 quid on it within the 90 days, and we should be OK for the 20,000 miles...

I was changing to an Alliance & Leicester bank account and also applied for a credit card at the same time. Did you sign the agreement straight away and left it. Since then received an email and letter saying if I sign I will be sent a £15 Argos voucher within 21 days. Worth not signing straight away!
    • What the freebie is? £15 Argos voucher
    • What you need do to qualify for it? Apply and not sign straight away!
    • Is it generally available or only through a special link? You receive an email and a letter if you keep ignoring reminders to sign
    • Any idea how long it's available for? No
    • Any details on the interest rate of the card? 0% purchases 3 months; 0% transfers 12 months. 3% min. charge for transfers as ran by MBNA
