    oh please.

Whens the last time anyone actually had a non-region 2 DVD? Most UK residents will never come across one in their lives.

Well, in actual fact, being an avid moneysaver, I generally buy region 1 DVDs and have done for over 5 years now. Most of my family and friends do also.

The benefits of this are that you generally get them for about half the price of UK R2 DVDs (although this margin has reduced somewhat over recent times), there is a wider choice of movies / box sets, you can get them months earlier than UK releases and the video quality / extras tend to be superior. The recent improved quality / extras, reduced prices etc. of region 2DVDs is undoubtedly due to competition from this type of personal importation.

I have a collection of over 200 DVDs so with an average saving of £10.00 per disc / box (conservative estimate to say the least) I have saved over £2,000.00!!!

I would say that this is a fairlyly good reason to invest in a multi region player - especially at under £20.00! We are discussing money saving here after all!

I do my DVD comparisons at dvdcompare.net to find the best version of a particular movie (R1 is not always the best!) and then use dvdpricecheck.co.uk (and some other outlets / google) to find the cheapest option. If there are other region versions that don't have all the features, but are considerably better value (I picked up seasons 2 & 3 of The Sopranos for £15.99 each Region 4 recently!) then I may plump for those.

The one thing to be aware of is the personal import limit of £18.00. The government charges 17.5% duty and the Post Office (bless them!) a fee of around £4.00 to collect it for them!!! (daylight robbery!). Some companies will declare the retail value, others will declare cost or intrinsic values - just try a couple and find one you are comfortable with.

    Happy shopping!
  • im after a cheap recordable dvd player any good ones around?
  • I bought one of these compacks on Amazon couple of months ago. First one month it wasok , now it hardly recognises any DVD ,most of the times i get disk not found or bad disk. I would suggest it's waste of money.
  • I've recently brought a DVD player from comet, that is a divx compatable, and its £34.

Not sure about multi-region, but if your looking for divx, you'll be burning region 0.

They did have this at argos, at a slightly cheaper price. If you get evidence of the Argos price, and take it to comet they'll match it, and give a further 10% off.

Does anyone know if I could "unlock" my Panasonic dvd recorder from DVD RAMs to take DVD-R or +R?

Also my £17.84 Tesco dvd player won't play dvd RAMs, so I have a similar problem with that!

DVD's should play in a dvd-ram drive, without the cart being used, but its pretty old technology, and i doubt you could 'unlock' or 'hack' it to make them work if it doesn't already. Its not a case of them make it not to it, it simply wasn't concieved back then.

dvd rams won't play in a normal dvd player to my knowledge.

RAM is old but it's still an good system - the number of times a RAM disc can be used is much greater than a +/-RW.

You'll not be able to hack a DVD player to accept RAM. Best thing is to look out for a panasonic DVD player on offer somewhere (e.g. richer sounds). I think some of the toshiba and JVC recorders support RAM but I don't know about the players.

AFAIK Panasonic haven't released any updated firmwares to add extra disc support to their machines.

The alternative would be to get a DVD-Writer which supports RAM for a PC. Copy the .VRO files from the RAM disc, rename them .VOB and burn them to a +/- R(W).

Or you could rip them off via a PC/Mac to a DIVX file (Mpeg/AVI), and play them via a divx dvd player
