I'm very tempted to buy a new DVD drive with a hard disk drive but i'm holding off until the dust settles on what's happening with the new Blu Ray and HD DVD drives.
  • Does the Technika DVD-1030 play DVD-r? anyone?

I actually spotted the compacks one about 2 weeks ago , and it is absolutely fine, until I came to play my free dvds out of the telegraph this week and found they played but had no sound? They are fine on my PC so obviously the player.

Also Hacks are fine and that one above does work, but I found dvd players die within about 6 months of doing the hack. Better off getting the compack, which by the way came within 2 days I think. Free postage as well.

Using a multi-region code does not shorten the life of a dvd player in any way. I have 3 myself and several members of my family have dvd players that have been hacked using the codes and all of them are fine. 2 of my players are about 2 years old too.

Asda do a cheap DVD player which is available instore as well as online (you could add it to your shopping and use one of the vouchers.

Durabrand DVD Player - Model No DVD-2005. DVD +R/RW Playback, DVD -R/RW Playback, MP3 Playback, View Digital Photos, CD&CD-RW/RW Playback, AV Socket, Scart Socket.

I think this is multiregion or capable of it but I can't remember
  • I think you'll find the more expensive DVD players difficult to unlock, so try DVDEXPLODER. They have a dedicated team that work on individual players and have, most importantly, got great customer services who don't mind being hassled. Panasonic, Sony and Sharp players for example are very tricky to circumvent, so I let these guys deal with mine - a Sony DVP-NS335. They've got it databased if you're interested.

It 'is' a fee paying membership group, but they have a free page of DVD codes you might want to look at. For the work they do, it's more of a donation. http://www.dvdexploder.com/multihacks They've got loads of codes in their database, so it might be an idea to check them out before buying a new DVD player for Christmas. There's no need to spend much on a decent player nowadays and you don't to pay an enormous premium just to watch imported movies!

I bought a tesco £18 one a few months back and finally got round to using it.... when I'm watching a film it makes such a loud noise, it's like watching an old cine film..... anyone else had this....

(I will be taking it back, just want to know if I want a refund or replacement!)
  • I bought the Tescos Value DVD player...

1st one froze after 10 days
2nd one froze after 3 days
3rd one froze up after five weeks, when I finally gave up and got a refund.

My last DVD player was a Technica model from ASDA which lasted 2 years. Does anyone on here know what to do when these players freeze up?
  • Is this one available online or just instore?

Sounds like a bargain to me but can't find one online?

Does anyone know when blu ray & dvd recorders will be available in Britain? What is the best DVD recorder at present, which interlinks with HD. Thanks

I've had the Tesco one for several months now and it's been fine although it's not heavily used.

It is noisy though. We have a quieter, older and region free one for the "main" telly. So I'm OK to put up with the noise from the Tesco DVD player given it's price. To me the noise is bearable and I know I can always watch the DVD on the main TV in more peace and quiet.

I will be trying the unlock though - I have several R1 DVD box sets that have loads of extras that the R2s don't and it will great to be able to watch these on the Tesco DVD.
