I've ordered some more OPI today. They present have a kit on clearance that contains mine and my daughter's favourite lacquers - Espresso Your Style (for me - nearly finished my bottle and thought it was discontinued) and Thank You Muchness (for her - she only owns a mini sized one that is nearly gone too).

Well, I succumbed (sp?) and paid full price with free p&p for LD's Supermodel. It's my treat for the week ;)

It arrived 25 hours after I ordered it, with free p&p ! within 30 mins of it getting here I had applied 2 coats. It's my first ever Leighton Denny, I've never paid £11 for a nail polish before  but I'm really pleased with it. Great colour and it went on really well and dried hard within 20 mins.

Now I've discovered LD I need to be disciplined and not order willy-nilly from QVC :D

    Hey everyone :)

Interesting thread! Wonder if I could pick your collective brains?

I enjoy wearing nail varnish, but I don't do it very often. Partly this is down to the time it can take to do (and my lack of skill in doing it!), but mainly because whenever I do wear it my nails seem to be significantly weaker and more prone to breaking/splitting for quite some time afterwards. How long tends to vary, but as a general rule the longer/more times I used nail varnish, the more weeks/months they take to fully recover.

My nails are actually pretty strong (quite arched, which helps!) and durable normally - I used to be able to tighten the screws on an old pair of glasses I once had with my nails in an emergency, and I need what I term 'industrial strength' emery boards to file them with (currently using the big black ones from Boots). I don't grow them too long (they tend to be about half a cm on average) as I'm a computer geek and need to be able to type well, I always wear rubber gloves when washing up and cleaning, and I've never worn false nails. I'm also fortunate enough to have a lovely long nail bed, so even when filed right down they look good painted. So this post-nail varnish problem is annoying!

Anyway, I'm trying to make more of an effort at looking after myself and my appearance, and I've been fancying dusting off the French Polish kit - any suggestions as to how I can do this without either trashing my nails or my budget? ;)

    Thanks!

    Jes :)

Hi Jes. I'm struggling to know what to suggest to be honest. I don't really understand why nail varnish would make your nails weaker. My only thought was that perhaps it's what you're using to remove the varnish that's doing the damage, rather than the varnish itself. The Cutex range has some good removers, which are designed to strengthen the nails (or at least not damage them). Also, no matter how tempting it is to pick the varnish off you must resist. That will take the top layer of your nail off with it.

Other than that, I can only suggest using a decent quality base coat or strengthener under the varnish.

Does anyone else have any ideas?

Only to make sure that you use a good cuticle oil daily to conteract the slightly drying effects of the varnish and possibly try a formaldehyde free brand of varnish ?- Zoya for example.

Told you you wouldn't be disappointed. The only one of his lacquers that I have that isn't great quality is Steel Appeal which goes on streaky on its first application but is ok after two. All the others I own are very glossy. On a QVC Beauty Day a couple of years ago I bought a kit containing I Love Juicy, All About Me and Sophisticated with the crystal nail file for £22.00 plus p&p thinking that I wanted the file and only really liked AAM but for the price wasn't bothered about the other two lacquers. When they arrived I ended up loving the other two colours also purely because they are so glossy.

Did you know that John Lewis and Boots also stock LD lacquers?

I mostly use Stargazer - love the range of colours and they stay pretty well for me.

My top coat is Seche Vite dry fast top coat, you put it on when the varnish is still wet and it gives a gel like finish, I love it - if it peels it tends to take lare chunks instead of chipping, which I find easier, plus it dries really quickly.

Current undercoat is Sally Hansen double duty base and top coat which is ok, but I'll be trying to get seche vite bottom coat next time!
  • has anyone every used Barielle nail varnish? I love it, and I'm sure Belly Dance is sinilar to the LD Supermodel one
Plus they were on BOGOF. I have Elles Spell as well
