I want a dog!

Well, I dont think its just a case of proving where you live, but having a chance to talk over the implications of a new dog within the family whilst in the family home. They will want to see the garden and surroundings are safe for the dog and that all members of the family want the dog and also answer any queries you may have about taking the dog into your home.

Quite so but no-one at the rescue centre knew anything about the dog other than it was found as a stray and basic behavioural assessment. I did fill out a questionnaire though detailing our working hours and family/home circumstances.

I find they have a 'rubber stamp' approach to rehoming and dont seem to take into account the fact that we had a rescue dog for 15+ years, this said I understand they need to check all potential rehomers so will go along with the procedures because at the end of the day they have to make sure that these dogs get a good permanent home otherwise they will bounce back to the rescue.

My feeling is that there seems to be a wide variation on rehoming procedures from centre to centre.

Thank goodness there are people out there who do this job, I would find it heartbreaking especially when you see poor dogs getting overlooked.

I'll keep posting as I hope this one has a happy ending :)

Good luck to you, bet you're all excited. - when I was looking for mutt and went to the local centre, I could have taken all of them home. If I hadn't been sure I wanted, a bull terrier, I have no idea how I'd have narrowed it down between them all.
You're right about different centres having different policies though - the dogs trust were quite upfront and out of the 2 I was looking at, told me they wouldn't let me have one of them (for valid reasons.) Never got as far as a home check as I decided the other wasn't for me. The place I got mutt from didn't do any checks at all, other than ask whether I'd had the breed before, and handed mutt over quite happily. I did have to sign a paper saying if I couldn't look after her I'd have to give her back to them, but tbh that is completely unenforceable - how would they know several years down the line if I'd still got her or passed her on to someone else?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • Just an update...I got my dog today! yay! She is from the rescue centre and very sweet and placid and gentle. 4 years old and was found as a stray. She has had a walk, wash, dinner and is now snoozing at my feet. I expect she may keep me up tonight but I am prepared for it, she will be upset at first and wonder where she is but we will love her and take care of her.

BTW from a money saving point of view, the rescue centre was reasonably priced and they had a shop supported by pets at home which sold stuff for the dogs and profits go to the centre. The staff were helpful even though they were busy and not many people are coming forward for rehoming, they say they are very quiet at the mo, must be the recession and economy. I would wholeheartedly recommend going to the rescue centre rather than a breeder and am so happy!
