Or, FlatEric, you could perhaps use plastic canvas and just cut to size, then glue a magnet on the back? It's reasonable cheap to buy a bag of little magnets.0 -
Flat Eric is very excited - 1 more day at work then 11 DAYS OFF :j:j:j:j
Same for my hubby! His last day today for 11 days, he has a long list of jobs to do that will hopefully keep him busy and allow me to stitch.Secondly I am stitching a bookmark for a friend's special birthday. The design in the mag was actually made into a card, not a bookmark and I am using aida material that has blue scallop edging down the side. Once the bookmark is finished - what should I do to finish it ? Should I put cardboard behind it and felt (to cover the back)? or should I just get a clear plastic bookmark cover and stick it in that (with the back of the stitching visible?) If I do the cardboard and felt option - I presume I would need to stitch this rather than glue?
I have asked about bookmarks before and the general ideas for the back were to use iron on backing or a piece of material such as an old shirt. Though admittedly I wanted to keep mine as thin as possible because I was going to laminate them when done.sophieandemily wrote: »Now I am planning my next projects for the year in some kind of realistic order. Hi & welcome.
I have only given my cross stitch twice and they were both received very well. I gave a Country Companions design to my cousins little girl, Ruby. My cousin loved it and now Ruby is 2 yrs old she likes it too
For my Mums 60th I stitched her 2 Flower Fairies of her favourite flowers. She loves them and appreciates the work that went into them.
People take an interest in my stitching but I would choose carefully who I stitched for because like you, I want to know they appreciate them.
If you are thinking about giving friends/family a large design why not start off small to see how they are received? Maybe a stitched birthday card with a stitched keyring and/or stitched coaster?
If they aren't into crafty things at all they probably won't realise the time and care taken with cross stitching so maybe sneak a comment in as the gifts are being opened, something like.....'I stitched these/this especially for you. They/it took me 2 weeks to do' (or however long they took):heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live without :heart2:0 -

With cardboard and felt I would think that would make it quite thick. You want a bookmark as thin as possible so it doesn't distort pages/fall out from the pages of a book.
I use two layers of iron on interfacing, that seems to do the trick. You could laminate it at that thickness as well if you wanted to, although the interfacing does stiffen it up quite well

I am going to give both of the dogs (the one I finished and the one I am doing now) as presents. I know my friends will love them. And also because I am such a dog fan myself I have absolutely loved stitching them. So win win."Everything will be alright in the end. If it's not alright, it's not the end."

Welcome back to the thread :T
If you are unsure I would choose someone you are closest to to be the first recipient. Then guage other peoples' reaction when that person opens the gift. I always tend to get questions about how long it took, where did I get that design etc etc. Peope who show no interest...you know not to bother for themCross Stitch Cafe member No. 32012 170-194 2013 195-207.Hello Kitty ballerina 208.AVA 209.OLIVIA 210.ELLA 211.CARLA 212.LOUISE 213.CHARLEY 214.Mother & Child 215.Stop Faffing Completed 2014 216.Stitchers Sampler. 217.Let Them Be Small 218.Keep Calm 219. Sophieandemily I don't normally give my work away apart from to my grandchildren but i did an anniversary sampler for my inlaws as after 60 years they have everything they need and they were thrilled to bits even though they aren't crafty people.Cross Stitch Challenge Member Number 20

Tried to be clever and do a reply with quotes but it has disappeared so I have given up on the quoting thing!
Anyway I am Beth Sophie and Emily are my little girls although I also have a little boy now so should prob change my user name if that wasn't too confusing a thing to do.
Thank you for the advice about the gifts think I will have to have a good think about who will really appreciate it if I made them something have been going through a pile of cross stitch magazines and have a list a mile long plus other things I want to do to keep.
Must make some kind of order from my magazines especially as I have just spent my clubcard points on a cross stitcher subs as an early birthday present!0 -
Only another hour and a half to go, and then four whole days off :j

- out of interest, what do people prefer ? a stitchy gadget / chart book / or a free kit ? I prefer the free kits - even if its not a kit I would stitch, I can make use of the material / threads etc.
Free kit for me, I find those more useful, the chart books just go in the bookcase and often are not used.chickywiggle wrote: »On phone so can't catch up properly. Baby Noahs here. 6lb 3 oz. *Louise* I understand what you mean about the faint lines you can see when you have come to the end of the line as it were. One of my Winnie the Pooh stitches has that trouble as I stuck with the 10 x 10 squares.0 -
OMG I go away from here for a week or so and we have newbies and a new noah - who is too cute for words well done Chicky :j
Have got a nangy ouchy old duff back again atm - the kind where I am fine at work, fine doing housework but absolutely in agony if I sit still or lie down which is flippin annoying as it means limited stitching or I seize up (and dh works till 10pm a lot and I can't sit frozen to the spot till he appears:p) Also makes me a nangy old bag to be with, am still plodding on with chapel but not enjoying it that much cos of pain really and am not good with painkillers - dodgy stomach after juvenile arthritis and huge aspirin doses - so generally am a grumpy :rudolf: to be with (closest smiliey to a cow lol)
