....Should I be numptying around if it's under warranty?
Personally, I wouldn't. I think it's time to call Dell support - if they want to talk you through the steps, then it may be a different matter. G

I beginning to wonder if it's anything I've done messing about with the graphics drivers or whether it's inrelated!

It's odd how it went wring, then worked, the went wrong again.....

I have emailed Dell. I bought it through BT though

All the best with the email support. If they don't reply in the expected time period you may want to call & speak to a human or do a 'Dell Chat'.

If you need to call them click here.

Thanks. I was brave and took the cover off....(it only unclips). After earthing myself, I prodded the memory boards and it seems to be working now (although I can't get sound).

I've had another email from NVIDIA so I'll try their latest suggestion.
  • Still no luck....

    Here's that latest from Nvidia:

The Geforce 7800GTX can suppport the resolution of 1440x900. Since the resolution of 1440x900 resolution is not a standard resolution, it can only be added when the graphics card detects the display can support this resolution through a valid EDID. Since you are not able to add this resolution, your monitor may have an incorrect EDID. Please make sure you are not using a DVI cable which is too long or a switch device which may disable or corrupt the EDID signal. If the problem continues, please contact the manufacturer of your monitor for assistance with your display.
  • I've now been taking this up with Dell. Here's there latest response:

    1) Determine if the system contains an AGEIA? PhysX? physics accelerator.
Look for the AGEIA system tray icon:
If the AGEIA PhysX card is installed in your system, you will have an icon in your system tray for it if it has not been removed.

    2) If it is not installed installed then,
you will need to reseat the power connector for the video card. To do so, perform the following steps:
Ensure the system is unplugged and the flea power is off.
Disconnect and reconnect the small end of the power adaptor on the power connector of the video card.
Disconnect and reconnect the large end of the power adaptor to a spare 5 1/4 power connector from the power supply.
Close the chassis, reconnect the power cable into the back of the system, and power the system on.

    3) Connect the monitor cable to the white DVI Video port on the graphics card and ensure the Flat Panel is setup to receive a Digital Signal, which traditionally requires a press of the Input Selection button for Dell Flat Panel monitors.

    >Where do I look? I cant see anything in control panel/system. I did also try opening explore and searching for files or folders on my hard drive but can't find anything.

    >How do you turn "flea power" off?

To turn 'flea power' off, disconnect the PC from the mains completely [one learns something new everyday! From click here: "Your computer uses zero energy when "off." That's true only if it is unplugged. Otherwise, the PC utilizes "flea power," or about 2.3 watts, to maintain local-area network connectivity....."]

The AGEIA PhysX card/accelerator, if present, should show up in Device Manager & it's software/drivers in the Add or Remove Programs applet [never heard of it before - see the Ageia website for more info. If it works like it's supposed to, it's very impressive & expensive too!]

Try out what Dell has suggested.

Not sure if it'll help much but....is it possible to borrow a 19" widescreen 1440x900 res TFT from a relative/neighbour/friend/work? At least, this way you could determine if it's a faulty monitor or not. G

P.S. Though I've not posted a reply for a while, I have been following your recent posts.
  • Thanks Goofy...

    I did follow their instructions.

After posting I sussed out flea power. I unplugged the cable then held the power button in...I think that drains any PSU smoothing charge etc.

Anyway, I don't have any of that stuff and Dell should really know that (I trust you've seen my other post).

Anyway, still no difference. I'll see if I can find another monitor to try. I'm not sure how a monitor could go faulty though such that the PC wouldn't show a 1440x900 option though?

Yes I agree, they should. No, I've not seen you're other post - please provide a link.

I couldn't imagine it either, but they may have a point about a faulty EDID (see below). My suggestion was made to discount a faulty monitor more than anything else. But again it could still be that this particular monitor (or model) that doesn't work at 1440x900 res with this particular system/graphics card/drivers/whatever. So, it may be best if you could try exactly the same monitor model to confirm/discount it.
Do you know anything about EDID?
Not a clue, until I had a look at this info about it. As nVidia say, your particular monitor (not necessarily the make/model as a whole, as mine is fine) could have an incorrect EDID, or the signal is getting corrupted* in some way?? Again testing with the same monitor make & model becomes relevant.

*Have you tried another monitor cable? I cannot recall whether you did or not. G
