There's no irony there, the form's just asking for the address it will be installed. If she lives with you, no problem.

There is irony. Pay attention. I was told to fill in MY details only. No she doesn't live with me.

    Try them next time.

I am sorry if you have had a bad day, or are fed up working at Sainsburys. But,what a stupid and pathetic comment to make.

You do not know what happend. You were not there. Speaking from a point of ignorance does not indicate any dignity or integrity. Why would you want to insult someone you don't know? Do you have personal problems? There are some good support websites on the internet. Being offensive is a short lived form of therapy.

If this is the " GOOD MANNERS" you displayed at Sainsbury's, I am surprised you were not kicked out !

And here it is straight from the TV Licensing website !

FOI: Administering the TV Licensing system part 2

    Retailer notification

Why do television retailers record and pass information to TV Licensing about people who buy or rent television sets from them? The Wireless Telegraphy Act 1967 (as amended) obliges retailers to notify TV Licensing of any sales or rentals of television sets. The Act specifies the type of information a retailer must record from someone who buys or hires a television set, which is then notified by the retailer to TV Licensing. Notification must take place within 28 days of the purchase or rental date. Failure to provide notification is an offence under the Wireless Telegraphy Act.
TV Licensing cross-references the notification against information in its database and if there is no record of a TV Licence at the address provided, a reminder letter is automatically sent to the address.
TV Licensing regularly provides retailers with information about their legal obligation to provide notifications, and visits retailers to verify compliance. TV Licensing may take action against retailers who don’t comply with the notification requirements under the Wireless Telegraphy Act.

So there is a good reason why they are doing it !

Let's see what other excuses people trot out now .

Just shows how pointless the exercise is.

If I had no licence, and had no need for one, then bought a TV for a friend/relative, I would be asked for my address. If I then supplied my address I would receive a totally pointless communication from TVL telling me there was no record of a licence being held at this address.

So who would have achieved what exactly?

The retailer would have fulfilled their legal obligation.
TVL would have needlessly checked a database, and then generated some unnecessary paperwork.
I would still not require a TV licence.

Sainsbury's must be so devastated to lose your custon. They must be wringing their hands in despair. The owners must be wanting to top themselves and every enployee of sainsbury's must be desperate to bow low before you and ask for forgiveness from the all-knowing One.......

The point is that the OP was raving and ranting about Sainsbury's doing it and I was pointing out that it was because they were obliged to. The fact that it may be a pointless exercise is another matter altogether.

I wanted to show that Sainsbury's had not plucked the rule out of thin air. It is probably a stupid rule but they have to follow it because it is law.

I appreciate that and fully understand that the OP has managed to come across as an argumentative @rse. Which I am sure was not their intention.;)

Sadly the minions aren't told why, we're told to do it, not ask questions. Although if someone wanted to know why I'd probably just get a manager, not force the person to fill out the form, although in our store the tv's aren't available to pick off the shelves, they have to be collected from the warehouse so I'd usually explain to the customer that by law we now had to fill out the form and would they mind giving me some details while they waited on there tv coming through.

People need to remember supermarkets are continually being tested by police/test purchases etc to check we are doing our jobs correctly, if we sell a tv without the customer filling in the form, we can get fined, and it's not just the store, the cashier who sold the product does too.

I do appreciate it's inconvenient for customers but rules are rules I guess.
well more fool you then. do u really think u can DEMAND the name and address from a customer without even knowing why?! come on now...
