  • They sell the most amazing ice cream in round tubs (£1.49) - chocolate and vanilla, tirimusu, and fruit and cream. When I got the carton out when we had visitors they thought I had bought it in a deli. Bought lollies with vitamins at the weekend for 79p for ten - helping my sore throat no end! Have to say that the shop in Frome is immaculate and they even opened another till for me because of the ice cream.

    anyone seen crab in lidl?

Yes, look out for them in the freezers, trays of 7-8 Irish Velvet Crabs (800g, £3.99), or rather larger ones shrink-wrapped singly (400g, £2.99). They look pretty good. The lobsters are inside a wrapper, couldn't get a proper look at them (£4.99).

What I want to stock up on is venison, (500g, £2.99) now a few trays of that I consider well worth the freezer space.

Off at a tangent, Lidl was also stacked with fruit trees and shrubs yesterday (blackberries, blackcurrants, roses, forsythia, deutzia, apples and a few other things) all at £3.99 I think it was.

I bought two goose (geese?) from Lidl last Xmas, and we only had the second one last month. It was absolutely delicious. They're reared in Hungary, free range (as Geese don't take kindly to intensive rearing), and I'm still cooking my roast potatos in the goose fat.

    Great find, Thanks OP
was thinking of having goose this yr, whats its flavour close too, and how would you cook it to make it nice and moist?

I think it's flavour is a little like duck, but maybe not quite as strong.

I like my poultry well cooked, so as the fat dissolves and the meat almost falls of the bone, rather than rare. And I roast it slowly, at about 150/160 c for about 4 hours. I then get a bird that is a dark golden brown, with very crispy skin - the fat has almost dissolved away - (no need to !!!!! skin if cooking this way). This is for the size goose that Lidl sold last year. I stuff it with quartered apples (granny smiths). In fact, the meat can be cooked even slower and longer if you prefer.

Goose has lots of fat, so the meat remains soft and succulent - cooked like this it's almost 'buttery'.

As it is a fatty meat I tend to serve it with red cabbage, boiled new potato's, a cucumber/dill salad and a few bits and pieces (including a lovely gravy,)rather than the traditional accompaniments - it has gone down a storm with everyone!

Oh - my mouths watering thinking of it :D
  • Worth joining Lidl's mailing list which keeps you updated with forthcoming special offers (non-food).

I got a very nice German portable radio a few months ago. Good quality for only £9.99.

Talking of Lidl, I will be 1st in line on Monday (6th) for the Toy Crane which is a MEGA bargain.

I got one for my son last year. It's a real bargain, as SG says.
  • Lidl potato salad is the best (I sound so sad!). Tesco's is like eating dice covered in slime. I know, I've tried.

Did anyone have the lobster from last year - sold in the long tubes? Was it tasty?
