eBay Stove giving no heat hardly

hi i recently bought a fireglow10 8kw stove from saltfire stoves on ebay.

it arrived and looked great but about 3 weeks later i installed it and it is giving off hardly any heat. i placed a thermometer in the room and it got up to 17c after id burned a full bag of coal on it  (£5 per bag). the stove is installed in a fireplace with all the correct clearances from the walls, register plate is airtight etc.

i emailed the seller and they say the problem isnt the stove its the rooms insulation but the room is cavity wall insulated. an online calculator recommended a 3.3kw stove for my room size so there is really no excuse it has to be the stove doesnt it?

my question is where do i stand

can i get a refund or is it my own fault for not researching and buying cheap chinese imported stove?

ps i have no central heating and am freezing lol

If it has been installed correctly, and not doing what is says on the box, possibly recourse through trading standards?

If you installed yourself, get ready to be keel hauled when the resident stovies get in. :rotfl:

you'll not stand a chance getting any money back.

Irrelevant of who installed, surely this purchase was not fit for purpose, possibly misleading sales speel ect, is trading standards, then small claims court not a possibility?

I'd also be contacting ebay (not that they will give a jot) amend feed back?

hi not sure what 'keel hauled' means?

my dad installed it for me.

what are the consequences of not telling building control except saving £100?

i think im just going to sell the stove and buy a clarke regal 10kw
    from machine mart

End of day the stove is a black box so not a lot can be wrong with the stove. Its probably more than likely the way its installed.

If anything cheap stoves let loads of air in so should burn hot. Its when you try and close them down they struggle.

Are you lighting this using lots of kindling and ensuring that the kindling si well lit before adding the coal?

You may have saved £100 but if your house burns down you wont have a valid insurance policy as you wont have the required HETAS certificate.

Why buy another naff stove? If its installed incorrectly then it woulnt help matters if the installation is no good.

    Is the chimney lined?

Do you have a cowl on top?

But who's to say it isn't fit for purpose? If it ain't installed by someone who is qualified to install it then how are they able to comment on whether it is fit for purpose or not?

We've had people buy wood fired cookers with back boilers from us, then have them installed on the cheap by someone unqualified and then they call us complaining it isn't working properly. It's never the stove as they're generally a box with a hole in the top. We charge to go out and sort it.

As Stoveman said........generally cheap stoves overburn.

I once inspected an installation for a lady who bought a Saltfire stove. The stove was very badly designed as the flue outlet had a cross sectional area of around a 3" flue. Appaling. I condemned it. When I phoned the company asking about the CE Mark it turned out it wasn't CE marked although it said it wasin the manual. They started going on about sending us a baffle plate with a bigger slot cut in the front as the smoke wasn't going up the flue completely. I didn't want to get involved in it so left it alone.

It could be the stove, flue, installation or a mixture of all three.

Jury's out Ivan, sack yer dad :rotfl:

Frying pan>fire (excuse the pun) comes to mind if going down the Clarke route!

  • i know a few people with clarkes and they all love them.

my chimney is unlined and i dont have a cowl yet but will get one soon.

the chimney sweep said i had good draw, and i didnt need a liner. i may get one in the future when i can afford it.

the only thing i can think it might be is the register plate isnt high enough above the stove.

the coal is burning fast and well so i dont think its the flue.

You need to fill that stove up with logs. If you are only throwing in one or two like in the picture, this would explain the cold temps. Also try stacking long ways rather than side ways if they'll fit.
