My Virgin bill for 3 weeks (I was away for a week) calls this month is £62. Usually around £35, I queried it, they said a year's deal had ended, also they had increased the Broadband speed and put that price up (without asking me) its a nightmare esp. as my printer has a CABLE wireless connection, so if I change the printer won't work. I cannot afford this huge increase - help!
If you high bill is due to call charges, find an alternative (e.g. use 18185's freephone access number to make 01, 02 and 03 calls for 5p connection + 1p/minute instead of paying Virgin's charges).

Otherwise, check you bill and assess what parts you can do without (e.g. do you need to pay for all the TV channels?).

Sorry, don't understand how a printer can require a cable broadband connection.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    Hi,

Does anyone know what is and how to get/use BT Mainstream as international callchecker show that call cost through this cost nothing apart from connection charge???

    Thanks

It turns out it was work in progress (updating to take account of recent price increases) and you accessed the system in the middle of that.

BT is now back in its rightful place - way down the list.

could someone please recommend a cheap method of calling from a Virgin landline to Australia
I have been using Discount Dial but recently I find the price of calls has increased and am looking
for a cheaper alternative. I make family calls usually in excess of 60 minutes.

You will have been well and truly ripped-off by Virgin Media using DiscountDial's 0844 200 9090 number - 4.08p/minute when BT's charge for dialling the same number is just over ½p/minute!

Anyway, without hesitation, I'd recommend you open an account with 18185 and use their 08081703703 freephone gateway number to make such calls for 4p connection + 2p/minute (no Virgin Media charges).

As it happens, that's the No.1 recommendation from the MSE International CallChecker too.

  • We're on a package for cheaper international calls with Virgin, & although it's cheaper than your 40-odd pence per minute, we use Skype, which charges 1.6p per minute.
Virgin, by the way, rounds up every call to the next minute, which makes quite a difference -to their bank balance!

If you have inclusive geographical landline minutes you can call for as little as 1p a minute, via a 01/02 access number, and there is no connection fee.

The international call checker is superb and I use it all the time for New Zealand and India - saves me tons of money. Call quality very good and reliability fab. Only niggle is that after an hour or so you may get cut off but just redial.

    HOWEVER...

I have recently been using it for Gambia and omg what a difference! Most of the numbers do not work or at best are erratic (sometimes working, sometimes not) and calls are always being dropped and are of poor quality. I'll have paid loads in connection charges to be told number not recognised or cannot make call with this company - when I may have done it yesterday or so. Plus the rates are expensive. Absolutely dreadful! Very few calls get through or are accepted.
