saver-j if they have a condensing boiler get them to unscrew the outlet pipe at the base of the boiler as it may be frozen. It's been happening to lots of people (us included) but I learnt from our plumber what to do
Might just get it going again.

Hopefully they'll defrost without any issues. If its that cold, I think you should probably leave the heating on low overnight - leave the boiler on and turn the radiators down to the frost setting if they have TRVs, or otherwise turn the thermostat down to about 10C. I know its expensive, but not as expensive as having a leak (which would also mean not having any heating if you can't isolate it). The same goes for anyone else who is suffering really low temperatures. You need to keep the inside of the house warm enough to avoid pipes freezing. And if you have a well insulated loft, you may find the water in there freezes - I know my dad has been opening the loft hatch to stop his freezing!
Thanks for the advice greenbee, I really appreciate it as I know you have a lot going on in your life at the moment. I hope everything works out the way you want it to.

Bitterly cold despite the heating and the woodburner being on, I don't want to go upstairs to do the urgent stuff.

Check for clean towels and sniff test sleeping bags for those that don't bring their own. As they don't wash up or make any useful contribution during the festive season, they can put up with a slightly stale sleeping bag! Ah, that reminds me...

I have just spent over an hour shovelling snow from outside. There are some icy patches which I struggled to get rid of so have put loads of salt on them and will maybe give them another go before OH gets in. NN came and offered me his shovel as it is better than our spade. I also let OHs car run while I was out there, it hasn't been moved or started for 9 days and won't be shifted until our road clears. We might move it up and down the drive to make sure it doesn't seize though. It was a bit stubborn at first but sounds ok.
OH is out with the teachers for a Christmas lunch now they have finished. Although I have been really busy it seems silly to sit here doing nothing, I may as well try and clear some more of the list so I can spend more time with him. It looks like the kitchen will get done next but really can't face the oven.

Back from the hospital which went a lot better than last time so hopefully next time will be better again.
Piggers - one of the nurses did ask the specialist nurse about using the spray but apparently it doesn't numb deep enough as this injection has to go in quite deep as it's a pellet. He's had the spray before when he's had bloods that we didn't know about in advance - they will use it if required, they're really good in our Children's Clinic.
Helen - hugs - hope you manage to calm down and your Dad is okay.
