The letter about this possible extra payment states it will happen in January, its still December, the payments your getting are the early payments due to bank holidays, as someone pointed out, tax credits will make payments early to the whole of the UK even if the bank holiday is just in Scotland or Northern Ireland etc, so the payments your getting because of all the bank holidays and not anything to do with this possible 1 off payment in January.
The letter I recieved says the extra payment could be anytime between NOW and the end of january, the letter was dated 10th december so payments could be recieved in december. Some people have already recieved an extra payment!

Is the payment you recieved the same as your normal amount or different? if it is your normal amount then id say its just an early payment, if it is a different amount then its probably one of those one off payments.
  • hi, we spoke about these letters before. I got one of the letters three weeks ago. I phoned hmrc and the guy i spoke to was very vague an said he could see i had not as yet had an extra payment but didnt know if i would get one. I told him i would prefer not to get an extra payment as i am on a tight budget as it is. He couldnt help me. After checking my bank on xmas eve it appeared there was an extra payment of 100 made. I was due to be paid my tax credit on wednesday (yesterday ) but nothing went in. I again called hmrc and asked what had happened to my payment? I was told it had went in early, on 24th and i would get no other payments till 5th jan! I told them i was very annoyed at what they had done and have lodged a complaint. They have totally confused me and left me with nothing with their letters about extra payments, then paying money early into my account. Its a disgarce!!!!
  • I haven't been paid today and would normally have been. Why they have to make it so confusing I don't know! So I was paid early even though the HMRC site states that I would have no early payments and would be paid today as normal.
I'm very glad I went with my instinct that tax credits would have messed up again and refrained from spending the money and treating it as an extra payment, knew it would be this weeks money!
  • i have not recieved any letter ..but then again my post is still all over the place lol

i recieved my tax credits for the 28th on xmas eve . I'm due to be paid again on the 4th but as its a bank holiday in scotland im assuming i will get it tomorrow.
  • I got the letter earlier in the month, my payment for the 28th went in on xmas eve I assume my payment for the 4th jan will go in tomorow, some people have said their payments will go down in april, do you have children? I thought I read somewhere that the child tax credit is goin to increase from april, but I could be wrong. I don't really want this extra payment either as I'll spend it.
  • My letter dated Dec 10th arrived today!

As far as I know I have not had an overpayment yet. My normal payment day is Monday and my last payment went through last Friday (because of the Bank Holiday) so I am assuming that the next one will go through tomorrow.

Can I just point out before anyone panics - its not an overpayment, im sure you didnt mean that but someone could read that and get confused and panic thinking they have been overpaid, its just abit of your yearly entitlement paid earlier than originally scheduled.

As I mentioned earlier if the amount in your bank is not the same amount as your normal payment amount then it is probably this one off payment. The letter points this out and also explains why you may or may not get the payment - system upgrades in prep for the new tax year, they have no control as to why the system throws out the one off payment and that is why they have written to everyone.
  • non of my payments have been due on a bank holiday but they have still been all over the place. I actually got housing benefit on the 15th of december for the 23rd of december. My tax credits were due yesterday but i got them on christmas eve. It's so confusing
