OS Daily Friday 17th Dec

Options
Hi, this is the Daily Thread for 17th Dec. This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.

When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” type start does just as well.

Morning all
Boy am I getting fed up with my new sleep pattern, I go through phases of getting up at sillly o'clock & then feeling tired all day.
I don't need to get hubby up for another couple of hours yet, so I'll load the DW & WM & set them going once he's awake.
HM Chinese for tea tonight, our pretend 'Take away'.
We break up today so I have next week to get ready for our Yuletide celebration, this mainly means lots of housework to make the house look welcoming, lots of cooking so we have food to offer any guests who may visit & a few small gifts, many of them home made. We only give gifts to our children, grandchildren, foster children, & our 2 son's in law. This year we've spent less than £10 a head. I'm also given lot's of chocolates at the end of term, this is usually 'regifted' & this year I've been given a bottle of wine that will be stashed away & used at our wedding.
Time to stop blethering.
Keep warm & safe everyone.
Hugs Hester

Good morning, everyone, and, Hester, snap! I go through the same phases, getting up too early, then finding I'm flagging halfway through the day because I'm tired. Enjoy your last day at work before Christmas - I expect you're looking forward to the break. I'd love to be back in the UK for Christmas. It's almost a non-event here so we've decided that it will definitely be our last one here - we miss the family too much, and it's family that makes Christmas, isn't it, especially the children and grandchildren.

I seemed to spend all day cooking yesterday, which was a trifle difficult because DH was grouting the kitchen wall tiles and seemed to be everywhere that I needed to be. Still, I managed to get lots done, baking, home-made soup (potimarron - a sort of cross between pumpkin and chestnut - delicious as soup and also roasted in the oven), and a lovely sausage casserole in the evening. Today, we are having chilli pork burgers (from our lovely local pig farm), with home-made chips and salad. We haven't had the burgers before but they come highly recommended.

I hope the weather in the UK is not as severe as they predicted and, if it is, that you are all managing to stay warm and safe. It's a good thing that the school term is finishing this week; it should make it less busy on the roads, especially if there's a lot of snow.

It was a little milder here yesterday, and the sun was out for most of the day, but it was still just as freezing cold at night. Spring seems a long way off, doesn't it?

No more news about my BIL. He had a hospital visit yesterday, so I hope to hear from my sister later this morning. They are both on my mind all the time - another reason I wish I was back in the UK. It's very frustrating to be so far away at a time like this.

Well, I'm off for another cuppa. I hope you all have a great day, despite the weather.

    KathyXX

Morning Hester and all who follow. Hester - hope work goes ok for you today.
Another one up at silly o'clock. Cold o'clock it is too :snow_grin. We had a dusting of snow last night but it's gone this morning. More forecast i think though.
I went to A$da yesterday with DD who made a shopping list for me and was in charge. The joys of having a 26 yr old born organiser and Christmas enthusiast daughter - it was fab. Got 2 big roasting joints of topside for less than half price so they are stashed in the freezer for Christmas and New Year dinners. I was beginning to worry about shortages in shops if the weather is bad for a long spell, so I feel happier now that the beef is in. Also got lots of other things needed including a bottle of Harveys Bristol Cream which is of course a necessity at Christmas:D. I sampled it last night and had to have a 2nd glass to check quality.
Plans for today include dust and hoover round and possibly the purchase of the Christmas tree. We'll see. Other things will take place too:D.
Tea tonight is salad - very seasonal. I have a pack of salad that needs using, also some opened ham and I'll add other bits to it. I got some huge potatoes in my bag of A$da cheapies so will have baked pot or maybe some oven chips as i need to clear freezer space. Might have tattie soup first as i have 2 portions frozen.
Ok, off for 2nd mug of tea of the day.

    Good King Wenceslas looked out
    On the feast of Stephen,
When the snow lay round about,
    Deep and crisp and even.
Brightly shown the moon that night,
    Though the frost was cruel,
When a poor man came in sight,
    Gathering winter fuel

    Morning :santa2:
My tree is upwoohoo.gif:D Lounge and hall fully decorated, I just need to bring in my real tree from the garden. This'll be the last year it comes in, it's too big for it's pot now so after Christmas I'll plant it near the patio.

Please convince I've done the right thing - I was offered a free catering range oven. Bit like THIS but bigger and without the wheels. But because it's one big oven instead of two or three small ones, I turned it down, it'll cost a fortune to run, what with the kids putting only one thing in to cook at a time. And try as I might, I wouldn't be able to fill it each time I wanted to use it. But I really wanted it :D

We didn't go shopping or to the party last night, we were too tired. So I have to nip to town today to pick up a couple of DVDs. I have a bit of tidying to do, then I'm giving myself the afternoon off :D

    Happy Birthday Bargainbird :bdaycake:

OOOHhh Tru - I'll have the oven if you don't want it!! Seriously though I've not got space and I'd have the same concerns as you xx.

Went out last night to the PTA christmas drink in a local pub - very exciting as the pub was quite full (the table near us was full of off duty police enjoying their christmas outing) and some loud youngesters started having a disagreement. It turned into fisticuffs and apparently 3 police vans turned up. The off duty police had to leave which I thought was a shame for them. But it was certainly a bit different!!

Last night made leek & potato soup with leftover water from having boiled broccoli the night before. Just threw it all in, boiled it down and then liquidised it as otherwise the boys would have turned their noses up! But it went down well. Today is the last day at school - DS2 has been up half the night with a cough, but as its the last day and they'l be watching DVDs and the like he'll be going. Don't like the look of the temperatures in the weather forecast today - high of minus 4 - OMG. Got a chicken out of the freezer last night - will be eating it tomorrow I think as its so chilly I can't be certain it is defrosted! Made some bird feeders as well yesterday so I'll put them out with some water later to look after our feathered friends.

Love and christmassy hugs to you all. xx
Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.

I know I said I'd be MIA but I woke early so have time to post.

It's snowed here!!!!! :j:jProper snow, and lots of it. As we are right next to the sea we missed out on the snow last time. It's kinda put paid to my plans on wearing my dress and heels to my xmas do later :rotfl: . I'm now planning on boots, skinny jeans and a top instead. Xmas do should still be on as:
    a) we won't let a silly thing such as snow get in the way of drinking :rotfl:
    b) the majority of us live within walking distance of the place we were going to!

I'm meant to be going into work at 10am to have a meeting with a student social worker who is coming on placement with us. I'll ring my boss later to see if my boss can get in (she lives furthest away) and whether the meeting is still on. If it is I'll dress warm and walk in and get changed at work. If not, then I've got all morning to get ready.

    Have a great day all

    x

  • Good Morning chums ,no snow yet but very very cold .Last day at school for the boys today so they will be full of beans I think I have a carol concert this morning at their church I hope they have got the heating on.
Well I shall pack my bag for the week-end and just pray that we can get up there. The boys would be heart brocken if its called off and we will lose quite a bundle of cash as all tickets, hotel and train tickets are bought and paid for already.
Still fingers crossed. No shopping to do and only local neighbours cards to pop through the letter boxes.Right I'm off to have a nice hot shower followed by a big bowl of porridge to keep me warm and my motor running this morning .Talking of motors I had better top up my car today as it will only get busier the nearer to Christmas at the garage
Have a good daay everyone and Happy Birthday to Bargainbird Hope you get all you have wished for

Happy Birthday BargainBird :bdaycake:have a great day xx

Cold here - 7 this morning, the snow is due to start at 9, we shall see, I am off to work, and dd school, so lets hope all the trains etc are running. Its non uniform day at school so dd is in a flap about what to wear, when I suggested something warm I got a 'look', oh the joys of being young :rotfl:

Tea tonight for OH and I is jacket spud, with ham cheese and salad, dd will have a veggie chilli and pasta.

Need to tidy round later on, and put a wash on.

Have good days all, and keep warm xx
  • Good Morning Everyone, its Friday :j

Happy Birthday Bargainbird  have a fantastic day.

Very cold and icy here too. Heating has been bumped up for a while - need to go in the shower and its too cold at the moment.

Do not have to work at my 2nd job today so plan is - bit of essential office work, housework, wrapping, washing and ironing. Have a massive tesco shop coming this morning too.

Not sure what is for dinner tonight, think possible pork kebabs.

Nothing else to report, keep warm all.x

    Morning

We've had a good six inches of snow overnight and I've just had a text to say the kids school in closed so that puts paid to todays plans!

DH came in from work at 3am and i'd fell asleep on the sofa so I woke up and we sat up talking sh!te till DD woke at half six and then he went to bed as he has work again tonight......it was lovely but I'm sure I'll regret it later!

So the new plan for today is meal plan for the next two weeks, to shopping list, update basket on online shop thats booked for delivery on Wednesday.

Then need to write a 'to do' list and a 'to buy' list and then will be wrapping presents each evening over the weekend when I can get the kids up to bed as I would like to be done by Monday.....not sure I can be but thats the aim!

I have some mince in the fridge to use up and also some potatoes, carrots and onion which sounds like the making of a lovely mince beef stew for dinner. Just right for this weather!

I'm really suffering at the minute with my joint/tendon pain and its been getting me down a bit but I've received some more hospital appointments for the new year so hopefully they'll be able to diagnose and then treat the condition and hopefully manage if not cure it :)

    Stay safe, stay warm x
